Peter's uncle lived in the country. Once Peter went to stay with him for a few weeks. Whenever they went for a walk and they passed somebody, his uncle waved.
Peter was surprised and said, "Uncle George, you know everybody here. Where did you meet them all?"
"I don't know all these people," said his uncle.
"Then why do you wave to them?" asked Peter. "Well, Peter," answered his uncle, "When I wave to someone and he knows me, he is pleased. He continues his journey with a happier heart. But when I wave to someone and he doesn't know me, he is surprised and says to himself, ‘Who's that man? Why did he wave to me?' So he has something to think about during the rest of his journey, and that makes his journey seem shorter. So I make everybody happy."

Alena is an American student. Like other 13-year-olds, she enjoys singing, going to the movies and hanging out with her friends. But unlike other teenagers, she is now studying biological (生物的) sciences at university. She is the youngest black student to be accepted into medical university in the US.
Alena has had a strong interest in STEM—science, technology, engineering and math—from an early age. She is always thirsty for knowledge. When she was in fifth grade, the girl started to attend high school-level course online after school. Taking extra classes, Alena said, was more of a pleasure than a pain. Learning new skills seemed to be a walk in the park for her.
But if you think Alena is just a bookworm (书呆子), you are totally wrong. Besides excellent grades at school, the girl has created the "Brown STEM GIRLS" program, hoping that it can offer girls of colour a chance to receive education in STEM.
As one of Alena's teachers said, what really makes the girl different from the other teenagers is not her brain but her heart. Alena always wants to help and to lift others up. As a medical student, she hopes that she can use her knowledge and skills to help people in need.
Alena hopes to serve as an example to others. She wants to prove (证明) that someone's age should never stand in the way of his or her success. "What is age?" she said. "You're not too young to do anything. You can achieve anything as long as you put your heart and mind into it. You can do it. Don't let anybody tell you no."
Dolphins (海豚) are very beautiful and very nice animals. There are 17 different kinds of dolphins. Small dolphins, like Maui's dolphins, are only 1.2 meters long and 40 kilograms. The biggest dolphin, called an Orca, can be 9.5 meters long and 10 tons. It doesn't matter the size, though. All dolphins can talk. Maybe they cannot talk with words, but they can talk with sounds.
Dolphins like to swim beside each other. They travel in a group. We call a group of fish a "school". They do not study, but they travel together. Dolphins are mammals (哺乳动物), not fish, but they swim together in a school. Dolphins talk to the other dolphins in the school. They give information and they show their feelings. They tell when they are happy or sad or afraid. They say "Welcome" when a dolphin comes back to the school. They talk when they play.
They make few sounds above water. They come up out of the water because they need to breathe (呼吸) air. They make many more sounds under water. People cannot hear these sounds because the sounds are very, very high. Scientists make tapes of the sounds and study them.
Sometimes people catch dolphins for a large aquarium which is a zoo for fish. People can watch the dolphins in a show there. Dolphins do not like to be away from their school. They feel sad and lonely.
There are many stories about dolphins. They help people. Sometimes they save a person's life. Dolphins are very smart animals. They say that dolphins bring good luck. Many people believe this.
