I will never forget the lesson that I learned when I was in my primary school.
One day, my 1 teacher, Mr. Brown came into the classroom. Without saying anything,he drew a line on the blackboard. Looking at the confused students, he. asked,"Who can make the line 2 ?"
Before he finished what he wanted to say, all of us laughed and cried,"That's too easy."
"But there are some 3 . You can't remove the existing(己有的) line. You can't crase any part of it. 4 you can't even touch it."Mr. Brown added.
We had never 5 that the line needed to be shortened without doing anything to it! All at once, the whole class fell into 6 . We were just looking at each other, but 7 of us came up with any idea. All our mind seemed to go blank. When I looked at Tom, the smartest student in the class, I noticed him quietly 8 his head.
After a while, complaints could be heard everywhere.
"It's impossible. It can't be done."
"9 can we do that without touching the line?"
Mr. Brown didn't say anything. Slowly he 10 a piece of chalk, and carefully drew on the board another line that was longer than the first one. Then he 11 ,"We can't make the line shorter, but we can draw a longer line to make it look shorter."
For some time there was dead silence. Then smiles of 12 appeared on every young face. Finally we shouted and applauded(鼓掌) 13 as we realized we had learned a useful lesson.
For many people, when they are faced up with competition, the first idea that will come into their mind easily is to cut others' line short. However, the art teacher showed his primary students in a 14 way that it is the wrong way to win a competition 15 cutting the line short. The right way is to make your own line longer.
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist. She was born in Coyoacan, near Mexico City,in1907. Frida grew up in a bright blue house with her parents and sisters. When she was six years old, she became ill with polio(小儿麻痹症) and had trouble walking fast.
Frida spent a lot of her life in and out of hospitals. She had many health problems and she suffered (遭受) a lot of pain. When she was eighteen, she was in a bus accident. She broke lots of bones and she spent many months recovering. It was at this time that Frida started to paint. Many of her paintings from this time are about her life to show her pain.

After they got married, Frida started to wear traditional Mexican clothes and became interested in Mexican folk art. This influenced her paintings, which are very bright and colourful, with an original style that is very personal to Frida. However, they continued to show the pain and sadness which she experienced during her life.
Frida Kahlo died on 13 July 1954, after suffering more and more health problems. Her husband died three years later. Today Frida and Diego's home, La Casa Azul, is a very popular museum. Do you ever feel like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you rush from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, you may easily get lost in what you are doing or learning. It is important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you've been doing or learning.
Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. By buing calm and going slowly, you give your brain a chance to look at the things it has already received. Some people prefer to do the self-reflection only in their mind. Others write notes.Either method works, depending on your own learning habits. Here are some tips on self-reflection in your study.
Use natural breaks in your textbooks as chances to stop and reflect. School textbooks are often divided into chapters and units. This makes it easier for you to begin the process of self-reflection.Look for the times when you complete a unit of study in the subjects you are learning, such as math, social studies, science and art. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test or quiz.
Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you have written and make some connections. Sometimes just pausing(暂停) to think deeply allows your brain to make connections. Having lots of connections allows your brain to quickly retrieve_information when you need it again.
Next, think about things that you are unsure of. For example, maybe you learned about a certain body system, but you're not sure how it works together with the other body systems. Maybe you learned a new way to solve a math problem, but you're not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Self-reflection is a very important skill for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to reflect, try it now.
Alaska is disappearing slowly, but surely. It is believed that since the 1950s, as much as 15%of Alaska's land area has disappeared. How can a whole Alaska be disappearing? The problem is that Alaska's glaciers are melting (融化).The state has more than 100,000 glaciers. These glaciers account for about75,000 square kilometers, or 5% of the state's area.
According to a recent report by the US Geological Survey, 99%percent of Alaska's glaciers are diminishing (减少). This diminishing seems mainly because of the increase in global temperatures. Since the 1960s, the average year-round temperature has increased by almost 3℃. Besides, the average winter temperature has increased by over 6℃. Presently, an estimated 100 cubic kilometers of ice is disappearing from Alaskan glaciers every year. It may be even more in the near future.
Another problem facing Alaska is its melting permafrost(冻土). Much of the land in Alaska used to be forever frozen or frozen for most of the year. Now, the melting permafrost is causing a number of problems for people living in Alaska. Roads and public poles are falling down. Also, the hard permafrost that prevented beaches from eroding (被侵蚀) during storms is now melting.People who live along Alaska's coasts are being forced to move away. For villages on small low islands, one terrible storm could wipe out the whole community.
The melting permafrost and increasing temperatures are both influencing the forests of Alaska. As the permafrost under the forests melts, insects that normally do not turn up until the warmer seasons are appearing sooner. If something can't be done to change things, people will not see Alaska's forests at the end of the century.
Some scientists believe that human activities have something to do with a global increase in weather temperature. Whatever the cause of rising temperatures may be, the fact remains that temperatures are warming, influencing Alaska for the worse. Terribly, this could be a pre view of what will happen to the rest of the world in the next century.

Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world. They grow to be as high 380 feet. A redwood would impress you greatly if you stood near one. But why do they grow so tall?
It's hard to see redwoods from the ground, but they are competing. They are with each other to get the most sunlight. The trees that get the most sunlight grow taller. Trees that get stuck under other trees don't get much light. This way, they lose the chance to grow than others. So redwoods use all their to compete to grow tall, or they will get trapped on the bottom.
However, growing tall sometimes causes lots of trouble. Their lives might be safer and easier if they didn't have to grow so tall. But there is no way them to stop growing. So they have to compete their whole lives.
