One Sunday evening, it was quite dark when old Stanley went for a walk. He was walking along the sidewalk. Suddenly, he saw a white car coming around the corner at high speed (速度). It was going too fast and crashed (冲向) into a red car in the street where he was walking. He ran to the cars to see if anyone was hurt and needed help.
The two drivers were arguing.
"You came around the corner too fast," one man said.
"No!" said the driver of the white car. "That's not true! Your car was parked in a wrong place."
Stanley listened to their argument and then said the white car driver was wrong to drive too fast. The driver of the red car asked Stanley to show he was right in court (法庭). Stanley gave the driver his name and telephone number.
Next Thursday morning, Stanley was asked to go to the court. The lawyer (律师) for the driver of the white car asked him a lot of questions about what he had seen. Then he asked Stanley how old he was.
"I'm eighty-two." answered Stanley.
"Do you usually wear glasses?" asked the lawyer. "Yes, I do," answered Stanley.
"Were you wearing them on the night of the accident?" the lawyer asked. "No," replied Stanley.
Then the lawyer said, "Why should the court believe you? You are eighty-two years old, you were not wearing your glasses, and it was dark. How far can you see in the dark?"
Stanley thought about it for a minute. "Well," he said, "When it's dark, I can see the moon. How far is it?"
①Two drivers argued with each other after an accident.
②A red car parked on the street.
③Stanley saw a car accident while he was walking on a dark street.
④Stanley gave his name and phone number to the red car driver.
⑤The lawyer questioned Stanley's words.
①It's easy to think "that will never happen to me," but natural disasters (灾难) are becoming both more common and serious. Millions of families face floods, tornados and other natural disasters every year. In Australia, for example, its wildfires from 2021 to 2023 were caused by the high temperature and a drought (干旱), taking away the lives of hundreds of people and billions of animals.
②While you can't stop disasters from happening, you can stay safe during one if you know what to do.
Flood
③Floods can happen very suddenly. Flood water can be deeper than it looks. It can carry you away, so stay away! Glass, snakes, and dirty things can be in flood water. They can make you sick, so don't drink it even if you are thirsty.
Tornado
④A tornado happens during some storms. If there's a tornado warning, go someplace, such as a small and sturdy (结实的) bathroom, which is safe from the wind and flying things. Remember to keep away from windows or anything heavy that might fall on you. Get down low and cover your head with your arms.
Earthquake
⑤You can stay safe during an earthquake by moving away from things that might fall. Get down under something that's strong if you can't rush out of the building right away. Protect your neck and head with your arm. If you're outside, go to an open space. Stay away from trees or anything that might fall over and hurt you.
Bushfire
⑥Bushfires, also known as wildfires, are common across the world during the hotter months. It is important that you try to stay calm in a bushfire. Some fires can start so quickly that they threaten (威胁) homes and lives within minutes, so your safest choice is always to leave early. You'd better prepare an emergency survival kit and have it handy at all times.
⑦No one wants to be caught in a dangerous and extreme situation. If the unthinkable does take place, having a plan and knowing what to do could make all the difference for you and your loved ones.
Do you always feel lonely? When do you feel lonely? Is loneliness a good feeling? Nowadays more and more people are having this kind of feeling in their daily life. When someone feels lonely, he or she will have an experience of being alone because of low levels of social contact and relationships.
There are two kinds of loneliness: emotional loneliness and social loneliness. Emotional loneliness is about the relationship between parents and their children. When children leave their parents for a while they usually show the pain, such as crying and trying to search for their parents. Therefore, emotional loneliness is caused by leaving a person that someone is close to, such as a parent. On the other hand, social loneliness is the loneliness that one experiences when he or she leaves a wide social network. One doesn't feel that he or she is a member of a group, or one doesn't have friends to talk to when he or she is sad.
Besides, loneliness is different from being alone. Being alone is about not having contact with people. But loneliness is a subjective experience: if people think they are lonely, then they are lonely. People can be lonely when they are alone, or in a group. What makes people lonely is the fact that they want more social interaction. People can be in a group and feel lonely because they don't get to talk to enough people. On the other hand, one can be alone and not feel lonely, though there is no one around him or her. That person is not lonely because maybe he or she doesn't want to have social interaction at that time.
So, what about you? Will you feel lonely if you stay alone? Or you just enjoy the time being with yourself.
Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
Creating an interest in what they learn.
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to (注意) it for a long time. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
"Practice makes perfect." Good learners will keep practicing what they have learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes, Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Developing their study skills.
It is not enough to just study hard. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. They also look for ways to review (预习) what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions.
They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning.
Learning is a lifelong journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn becomes a part of you and changes you.
A. It is a good habit to learn for a long time after doing some exercise. B. Practising and learning from mistakes. C. Good learners know the best way they can study. D. Good learners often ask questions during or after class. E. Good learners can always find interesting ways to learn. F. So, be a clever learner, and you will become a successful learner. |
