When I was young, I liked to show how good I was in front of others. However, an accident happened. And it taught me 1 important lesson.
One day, my friend Annie and I 2 our bikes. I was only a bike beginner. Because of this, my mother asked me 3 some equipment(装备) before we left. "No, I won't wear", I said, pointing at my 4 knees. "Oh, mother! You see. Annie doesn't wear it 5 !" "It can be dangerous," Annie said. "You need more practice." "Come on! I can ride 6 than you!" I said. Annie made a face, "Let's wait and see!"
After a while, I saw a path into the woods. "Let's race!" I shouted 7 started to ride towards the wood. The path was not as smooth as I thought. And suddenly…bam! I fell 8 my bike. My knees got hurt. Annie quickly helped me up. "Be more 9 next time," she said. Tears ran down from 10 face.
A fall into a pit, a gain in my wit. The experience teaches me not to be too proud.
In the past, I didn't get on with my parents. I hardly talked to them, because they liked to 1 me with my sister and that made me 2 . I sometimes argued with them about this.
However, I wanted to show them that I could do things as 3 as my sister. Then I began to spend most of my free time painting in my bedroom. Luckily, my art teacher, Miss Green, 4 me a lot of help. She taught me some drawing 5 to help improve my paintings. At that time, she was the only person I would like to talk to.
One day, I told Miss Green about my problem. She 6 me to take part in a painting competition. In her 7 , the best way to communicate with my parents was to prove (证明) myself to them.
After a few weeks' waiting, the result finally came out. I was very happy and excited 8 I got the first prize! When I took the prize home, my parents were very 9 . They never thought I could do a good job. I could see that they were very happy. And they began to care more about me. Now, relations between my parents and me are very good. So I think it's very 10 to have someone to talk to. Thanks, Miss Green!

Wu Zongfu is a hard-working farmer in Maguan Town, Chongqing. He grows very good rice, corn and other crops. And he often cleans the road for his villagers.
One day, a newspaper reporter found that Wu Zongfu shared his seed (种子) corn and planting experience with his neighbors. "Why do you share your best seed corn and planting experience with your neighbors? They also want to be rich as you," the reporter asked. Wu Zongfu answered, "Didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen (花粉) from the corn and blows it from field to field. If my neighbors grow bad corn, my corn will be bad, too. If I want to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn. And my neighbors helped me a lot in the past. I want them to be rich with me together." The newspaper reporter laughed after hearing that.
This is the truth about life. You can't improve your corn if your neighbors' corn doesn't improve. If you want to live well, you should help others to live well. If you want to be at peace, you should help others to be at peace. If you want to be happy, you should help others to get happiness. Your happiness and the happiness of others go together.
Today, with the development of society, people all over the world almost have the same hobbies, watch the same movies, and wear the same clothes. That is to say, we are not very different in some ways. However, cultures are still quite different. In the East and in the West, social rules are not the same.
In the East, it can take a long time to become someone's friend. But people are very close to their friends. When people from the West meet you, they will call you a friend right away. That doesn't mean they are close to you.
When people from the East meet you, they often ask questions. They want to know about your age, your salary (薪水) and whether you are married or not. For people from the West, these are not polite questions. They don't like to talk about these personal things. They think such kind of questions violate (侵犯) their privacy (隐私).
Family is important for everyone. However, in the East, family is always a part of life. Kids there live with their parents for a long time. They still listen to them after they grow up.
In the West, independence is very important. Parents prepare their kids for life. Then, after their kids grow up, they say goodbye and leave home. Later, the kids can choose to start a family or not. They don't have to listen to their parents.
▲ People in the West think about small details (细节). They also think less and act more. So, they will be loud about their opinions. In the East, people pay much attention to relationships between things, and they often keep their opinions quietly. That keeps relationships happy.
Last Friday afternoon, a group of boys and girls were standing together in the school. They were wearing traditional Chinese clothing, waiting for their parents to put a hat on their head or stick a hairpin(簪) in their hair. These young people were having their coming-of-age ceremony (成人礼). We usually see coming-of-age ceremonies in TV, films and books. In fact, it is an important event in almost every culture.
In the United States, turning sixteen is a big deal. Most teenagers get their driver's licenses at 16. Girls have "sweet 16" birthday parties when they turn sixteen to celebrate the coming of age. They usually wear pretty clothes and have a special dance with their father.
In Japan, Coming of Age Day is a national holiday on the second Monday in January every year. People who are twenty years old all officially(正式地) dress up on this day. Girls wear make-up and put on kimonos (和服).
Boys wear a man's kimono or a smart suit. They all go to streets, take photos, and have fun to enjoy their big day together.
In Germany, the coming-of-age ceremony is called Jugendfeier. It seems to be more thought-provoking because during this ceremony, a teacher will always give a speech to young adults, telling them adulthood brings not only joy, but also more responsibilities(责任).
My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and said, "Get up, you're going with me to cut the grass in the garden."
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business(生意)made me feel proud(骄傲)and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. "Take away these leaves!" he said seriously, "and don't make me have to tell you to do it again." The message was clear. Today I still value(珍视)it , which my father gave to me that day. It will always be helpful to impress(给……留下印象)the person you are working for.
After two years, I left home and went to another town to start my new life. Luckily for me, I quickly found a job to wash dishes in a restaurant. Every morning, I set off early, always with the same strong wish I got long ago. I felt like I was old enough to be independent and make a living by myself.
In fact, washing dishes was not exciting, but that didn't matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and whatever I got from the job was more than I had before. I could learn something meaningful from every job and do it better and better. One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. "If you only think about hard work and money, ." I answered.
In every job, from cutting the grass to washing dishes, I've learned much. I've learned something that helps me in my next job.

In Australia, kids, parents, teachers and health experts are calling for a change in school uniforms. They want to replace the traditional ones with sportswear.
A public health expert found that four in five parents and six in ten teachers would be in support of such a change. Many of them think students should wear sports uniforms every day. And 62 percent of primary school students and 72 percent of middle school students would like to wear a sports uniform five days a week.
"Wearing sports uniforms five days a week will save a lot of money," one parent said. "Sports uniforms are cheaper than traditional ones. Most sports uniforms include a tracksuit(运动服), a polo shirt with school logo, sports shorts and sports shoes."
Older students strongly agreed that they would be more active in sports uniforms. They said traditional ones were too "uncomfortable". Sports uniforms make it easier for students to take part in more activities. For example, girls will be able to play on monkey bars(攀爬架). They won't have to worry about showing their underwear while going upside down.
A teacher of an independent school said his students had been wearing sportswear uniforms since the start of the year. "It's very popular with students. It's not only comfortable and easy to wash and dry," he said. "but it's also friendly to both boys and girls."
According to an education department official, independent schools set their own uniform policies. "In recent years, more and more schools have followed flexible(灵活的) policies on uniforms." she said. "Some have no uniform at all."
