Everyone may have a chance to make the world a better place. Teenagers can make a difference, too.
Kyle Van Der Velden is a 16-year-old student in Wayne Hills High School. One day in school, he met a cleaner and saw him 1 away a lot of pencils. The cleaner told Kyle that he got pencils every day 2 he cleaned up the classroom. 3 he did not know what to do with the pencils, so he just threw 4 away.
One day Kyle got some information from the Internet. Some people in poor countries needed pencils badly. So Kyle decided to collect pencils 5 them. Later Kyle joined a group called Right-to-Write as a volunteer. The group sends pencils 6 people around the world. They collect pencils and put them into bags. Then they give 7 bags to people who travel to poor countries. The pencils will 8 to people in need by these travelers.

It had been troubling a little boy for long—his deskmate could rank (排列) the 1st in the class every time while he only ranked the 21st.
At home, he asked his mom, "Mom, am I more stupid than others? I feel I'm as hard-working as my deskmate, but 1 do I always fall behind?" His mom went wordless, not knowing how to explain to her son properly and 2 hurting him at the same time.
In another test, the boy ranked the 15th and his deskmate remained the 1st. Back home, he raised the same 3 . Mom really wanted to tell her son that intelligence is different, which means that students ranking the 1st are supposed to be 4 than others. However, was this answer in her son's best interest? Thank goodness she did not open her mouth.
There were many times she wanted to tell her son, "Your father and I used to be outstanding. Why aren't you just as clever as we are?" She stopped because she didn't want to put too much stress on 5 . She needed a better answer.
Time went by quickly. 6 he made great efforts, he was still unable to keep up with his deskmate. To reduce the stress on her son, Mom decided to take him to the sea. During the trip, she finally 7 to give him an answer.
Now, the boy no longer 8 his rankings, because he has entered a top university with the 1st ranking. Later he mentioned that valuable experience, "When my mother and I were sitting on the beach, she pointed to the front and said, ‘Do you see the little seabirds and clumsy seagulls (笨拙的海鸥) over there? When the waves (海浪) come near, little seabirds can rise 9 while it would take longer for clumsy seagulls to complete the process. However, have you noticed that it is clumsy seagulls that finally fly 10 the endless sea and get to the other side?' You might be a little slower, but if you keep trying, you will be the one who will make it!"
Almost every day, we learn of disasters (灾难) of one form or another through the Internet. Having a basic emergency (紧急情况) bag at home can be a lifesaver. These tips aim to help you develop your personal preparedness plan.
A rucksack (帆布背包) is more practical than a suitcase, as it allows you to have both hands free. The emergency rucksack should contain these things:
Food &Drink Drinking is more important than eating. Keep about 2 bottles of water per person a day in your rucksack. Make sure your food can be stored for long periods of time and that most of them can be eaten cold. | First-aid medicine Bandages, scissors, cotton balls and gauze (纱布), medical alcohol spray (酒精喷雾) are needed in most of the emergency. |
Clothing Put some light clothes and shoes in your rucksack, and it'll be better if the clothes and shoes are waterproof.(防水的) | Radio &flashlight (手电筒) The Internet only works when there is electric power, which could fail in a disaster. A radio or a flashlight can help you keep in touch with others then. |
Put the rucksack in the place where you can get it in the shortest time. |
After being a soldier for three years, I started school at Greenville College in my hometown of Illinois. I'd been away from high school for several years, but my high school headmaster, Mr. Gardner, invited me to a Valentine's Day dance party at school. The thought of seeing my former teachers was exciting. So, I agreed.
When Friday came, I cleaned up, dressed up and drove to the high school gym. While I was chatting with my teachers, the band started playing and a young girl stood up to sing. When I looked at her, I was crazy — I had never seen such a beautiful girl!
I asked Mr. Gardner who she was, and he answered, "That's Mary Riley, Robin Riley's daughter." I was shocked. They lived just around the corner from me. I walked across the gym floor to introduce myself, "Hi, I'm Jeffery Joseph."
"I know who you are," was her not-too-friendly response.
"Would you like to dance?" I asked. "No! I'm working," she shouted back.
"Can I call you next week for a movie date?" I asked. "No," was her response.
For the next month I phoned, trying to set up a date. She always had the same answer: No. Then one rainy afternoon in March as I was driving home after basketball practice, I saw Mary, walking with no umbrella, no raincoat, no hat. I asked if she needed a ride, half expecting her to say no. Instead, she stepped over the roadside and sat down on the seat next to me. It was only a few blocks to her house, but after driving her to her doorway, we talked for 45 minutes. It was magic from then on.
There are always lots of strange stories about protecting your eyes. For example, you might have been told that you'd go blind from reading in the dark, but you could make up for it by eating carrots.
This is just one of the wrong ideas you may have heard of. Below teens has picked out scientific explanations for three mistakes the people often make about eyes. Let's take a look.
Can eating carrots improve your eyesight?
Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, which is important and necessary for your eyes' general health. Vitamin A helps eyes to make light into signals, allowing people to see in low light conditions. However, eating more carrots doesn't help you see better. Some carrots will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman vision or allow you to get rid of your glasses.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?
Myopia (近视) can be passed from parents to children. A study by the Americans Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopia, there is a 33 to 60 percent chance that the child is. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it's down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non﹣myopia parents. So no matter how bad your parents' eyesight is, you still have a chance having good eyesight.
Is it true that people who are color blind can't see colors?
Color blindness doesn't mean that someone can't see colors at all, like at all, like a black and white movie. It means that someone has difficulty telling some colors apart, usually green and red or blue and yellow. Color blindness is usually a condition caused by not having color cells (细胞). If the cells don't respond (反应) in the right way to differences in wavelengths of fight, color blindness happens. There are different levels of color blindness. Some people cannot tell the difference between colors in dim (昏暗的) light, while others have difficulty in any light. In the most serious form of color blindness, everything is seen in shades of grey.
Two best friends were Willie and his little dog Bounce. Willie could never think of taking a walk without Bounce. Willie taught his dog many interesting tricks, and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk. One day, Willie walked with Bounce down to the river, which was not more than one kilometer from his father's store — Mr. Brown's store.
Willie began to throw stones into the water and to watch ripples (涟漪) as they made one circle after another. Bounce lay on the grass, enjoying the warm sunshine,
There were some wooden pieces floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. Just as he was about to throw, the wooden piece turned and he fell into the water. He was at his wit's end, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one to hear.
Not being a big water dog, poor Bounce ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking (叫), looking first at Willie and then around.
Then he started, as fast as he could run, up the street towards Mr. Brown's store. When he got there the door was shut, but he barked loudly, until someone came and opened it. He caught hold of Mr. Brown's clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping up and down. Seeing that, Mr. Brown realized something must have been wrong. He put on his hat and went with the dog.
Soon, the father came to the river, and saw Willie struggling (挣扎) in the water. Luckily, his father came to his aid and saved him. When he got over his fear, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friends.
It's known that green tea is a symbol of Chinese culture. Also, it helps to improve health in so many ways that some people think of it as a kind of medicine. Perhaps that is why the Chinese have been using it for more than 4, 000 years to treat all kinds of medical problems. Today, scientists know that there are catechin, caffeine, vitamin C and theanine in green tea that are good for health.
Catechin is helpful for lowering (降低) cancer (癌症) risk. It protects the body from cancer-causing substances (物质) and slows the growth of cancer. Besides fighting cancer, catechin prevents serious health problems like heart disease.
Caffeine causes the heart to beat faster. That's why it was once thought that caffeine was not very healthy, but studies suggest that there are also good reasons for drinking caffeine. Specifically, caffeine has to do with a lower risk for Parkinson's disease and liver (肝脏) disease. Yet, caffeine also has some weaknesses. It can influence sleep and make people nervous, so experts advise teenagers not to have more than 100 ml of caffeine a day. This is about the caffeine of a small cup of coffee.
Vitamin C is something that the human body cannot make enough by itself. So we have to get it through food and drink. The vitamin may play a role in improving physical conditions to colds and the flu. Also, it helps people to get well more quickly from those illnesses.
Theanine is another healthy substance found in tea. It has been shown to lower stress, both mental and physical, and increase mind abilities. It is also used for preventing some brain diseases.
As you can see, green tea has many good values. Drinking it may help you stay healthy. Of course, as with any healthy substance, it is important to check if there are any bad influence as well.

During the Spring Festival, Chinese people should have a wonderful time celebrating the big day. But on February 12, a news event in Monument to the people's Liberation (解放碑) of Chongqing surprised the whole country. A man from Kunming, Yunnan, drove a cool SUV called Tank 300 on the busy Zhonghua Road in reverse (逆行). After he hit several cars, he not only did not work with policemen, but also tried to run away and fight back to the police officers as well as local people, which not only seriously broke public order, but also had a very bad influence on the image (形象) of Yunnan people.
After receiving the alarm, the police quickly rushed to the scene, and in the face of this sudden situation, the police began to deal with it at once. In the video, we could see police officers holding electric batons (警棍) hitting the car windscreen and continuing to tell warnings to the man. However, this method didn't work. Instead, the man drove his SUV running through the crowd, seeming to be completely crazy about his behavior.
Faced with this dangerous situation, nearby local Chongqing people also joined in stopping the man's actions bravely. Some of them pushed trash cans trying to stop the big car, while others threw parking signs in order to warn him.
During the fighting, we may wonder why he had such a mad behavior? One reason is that he got much money from the government and became rich overnight. Another one is that he didn't get a good education.
Finally, after 30 minutes' fight, the man was successfully caught by the police and the public. He has been criminally put into the police station and the case is under further discussion. However, the result of this event is far from over. As we can all guess, he is sure to be seriously punished because of breaking laws.

Spring, summer, autumn and winter make a year. We clearly know each season is important. If I am which season is the most beautiful, I'd like to say all of them are beautiful.
Spring shows a wonderful picture of the blue sky and white clouds, green trees and clear air. Thanks the beautiful sunshine, the nature has woken up. Where is spring? Spring shines bright in our eyes, blows gently on our faces and dances happily among our gestures (姿态). People will have a new beginning in spring which is the best time to start the whole year's work.
is an active season. We can go boating and have fun in the water. Flowers are everywhere in this season. What I like is the lotus (莲花). The beauty of the lotus is different from o. As the old saying goes, "The lotus leaves the mud unstained (不受污染的)." To me, the lotus is a symbol of never giving in and being myself. Whenever I am sad, it encourages me to try my best to realize my dream.
I was born in autumn. It has seen my growth, happiness and sadness. the past months are sometimes bad, I own a new beginning. Since Autumn is when my life starts, it brings love, hope and enjoyment into my life. So it is surely the most m season in my eyes, not because of its beauty, but because it means a lot to me.
I love winter because I have fun with friends playing in the snow, a snowman, and enjoying the white world with the song Edelweiss (雪绒花). Winter is a season with hope. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
I love the four seasons. All seasons are great.
