I strongly believe the right words at just the right time could change someone's life. When I was 3 years old, my parents1 I was totally deaf. But from the third grade, they decided to put me a "mainstream" school where all of my classmates had2 hearing. So I was the only deaf child at Blue Elementary School. From the first day there, the other kids often 3 me and called me names mainly because of my hearing aid(助听器) and the way I talked. I was worried throughout elementaryschool. Besides the problems of  "fitting" with the other students, I also had4 with most of my schoolwork. One morning, Mrs. Jordan, my fifth—grade teacher, asked5 a question in her math class. She was a large woman with a voice that could knock off the walls of the tiny classroom, and it could even spread to the hallway. I read her lips(嘴唇) and immediately raised my hand. For once I knew the answer! But, when she called on me, I was afraid. I took a deep breath and6 answered Mrs Jordan's question. I will never forget what happened next, Mrs.Jordan pointed directly at me. With bright eyes and a big7 , she cried, "That's right! You are smart!" For the first time in my young life, I became a shining star. I had 8 been so excited before! Right then and there I made up my mind that I would make a place for myself in this world. No matter how many difficulties I might 9 in life, I knew I could overcome them. A simple five—word phrase had totally 10 my young life.

Do you know what a MOOC is? MOOC is short for Massive(大量的) Open Online Course. Thousands of people can take a MOOC all at the same time. You can be anywhere in the world to take it. All you need is a computer and the Internet. MOOCs became very popular in the autumn of 2011, when Professor Sebastian Thrun from Stanford University opened his course up to any student anywhere, and 160,000 students in more than 190 countries signed up. This new kind of online classes is shaking up the higher education world. For years, many colleges have offered classes online. MOOCs are always used in subjects like computer science or engineering. However, can MOOCs be used in other subjects like arts or philosophy(哲学)? Scott Anderson teaches philosophy at the University of British Columbia in Canada. He sees both good and bad sides to MOOCs. Scott says, "When students take some lessons, they needn't be present to hear and get them." He says more and more students in MOOCs can mean less communication between them and teachers. He also gives two ways to solve this problem more teachers and more online discussion groups. Lisa Jadwin teaches English and American literature and writing at St.John Fisher College in New York. She says online education has some weaknesses for her subjects. Lisa says,"What's lost in online education is face—to—face communication. But the teaching of literature needs that." She says some students can learn very well from talks, blogs and discussion groups. But she believes that mixed courses work best. Although MOOCs is becomning more and more popular in the world, the traditional teaching ways are not going to be removed very quickly by the Internet instruction.

One cool April 22 morning, people started the day as usual. Yet it was not a normal day. What's so special about April 22? The answer is simple. It is Earth Day. People all  the world celebrate this important day. The idea of having a special day to celebrate Earth began  the 1960s. Life was very different then. Few people talked or even thought about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water . On April 22, 1970, twenty million Americans  part in the first Earth Day activities. They showed that people really did want to do something about the environment. Since then many countries have passed laws to  the air, water, land and animals. The vehicles such as cars and buses must pass tests to make sure that they don't cause too pollution. Thanks to the laws, cars today release(排放) about half as many bad chemicals as cars did in 1970. As a , the air is cleaner than it once was. Rivers and lakes are also  today than before. It's a good thing. The Pearl River used to be polluted so seriously  few birds and fishes could survive(存活). Today, the river is cleaner. It is no longer dirty. It's healthy enough for birds, fish. and other animals. Now the celebration has spread to other countries. More than 175 countries celebrate it each year. We should  our best to help keep our planet healthy.

To be thankful is a powerful way to turn around your thinking. Being thankful will always allow a person to see what is good or even great about their situation instead of feeling upset and sad. Therefore, it is important to teach children about the power of being thankful. First, help your children to notice and be thankful for all the fun things that life has offered. Point out the beauty of the nature from the birdsong and the trees to the high mountains and rivers of their country. Second, thank your children when they do the something kind or other good. Parents should be a model by showing their thanks for small kindness. Thank your friends, husband, wife or other people in front of your children. That will make them keep doing good things. Third, tell your children that they have the power to turn bad things into happiness simply by paying attention to the bright side. When they complain about the windy or rainy days, help them to be thankful for what they have. They are in a safe and comfortable environment away from the rain. They are able to do many fun things such as reading books, watching a movie, drawing pictures, playing with friends. Last but not least, tell them often that money doesn't buy happiness, but their thankful attitude(态度) does. They will be happy if they choose to be thankful.
