Many people think heroes need to be handsome, rich, or very smart. But as for me, a hero is a person who always helps others. My hero is Uncle Bill. He is the oldest son of a worker, and he grew up in a poor family with four younger brothers and two little sisters.
He was good at neither writing nor math. In fact, he never did well in school. So he had to give up school at a very young age. He worked and gave all his money to help his parents. When he was getting older, he found that he was very interested in fixing things. He collected broken things which people threw away and fixed them into good ones. He could fix almost everything that did not work. He worked hard never gave up. Finally, he opened his own repair shop. It took him about 20 years to become a successful shopkeeper (店主).
Now, he is very rich and has four shops. But he never forgets the days when he had nothing. He gives money to poor families, helps poor kids buy books and offers them free lunch. He also encourages people to reuse things. He always says: Make good use of what you have because we just have one earth.
I am proud of Uncle Bill. He is really a hero.
When you are waiting on a phone call with a pen in your hand or have nothing to do on a train, you may probably doodle (涂鸦). Consultant Graphology (笔迹杏询师) Tracey has studied the most common doodles and their meaning in a new piece of research. Here she shares the psychology (心理学) behind those doodles.
Circles: Drawing round shapes expresses the need to love and be loved. |
Squares: If you're drawing squares, then this shows a practical (脚踏实地的) nature. |
Flowers: If your flower has a large round center, this expresses confidence and the enjoyment of a good social life. |
Hearts: Hearts have always been symbols of love. It clearly expresses that you care a lot about others' feelings, but easily get sad as well. |
Coils(线圈) : Drawing these complicated (复杂的) shapes means the doodlers have a colorful life and the ability of creativity. What unusual doodles they are! |
Webs: This kind of doodles may be unusual and complicated but drawing webs shows special personalities that are good at leading people to a special situation. |
Boxes: It's not good news for people who draw boxes. Tracey believes that while this shows great dreams, it can also be a sign of materialism (物质主义). |
Ancient art doesn't have to be boring. Technology in the 21st century can help to bring it to life by combining(融合) the best of the old and the new.
Along the RiverDuring theQingming Festival
Walking into the China Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, people were amazed by seeing a huge digital(数码的) painting. Scientists digitized(数码化) the famous painting Along the River During the Qingming Festisal by Chinese artist Zhang Zeduan.
The original(原先的) painting shows life during the Northern Song period and it includes many details of ancient Chinese customs, lifestyles and technology.
____Farmers work in the fields, sailors move around their boats and people eat and do business in restaurants. Parts of the background are also animated(做成动画). You can see the wind blowing through the trees and across the water. These animations perfectly combine modern technology and ancient art.
Digital technology allows today's artists to express their ideas in ways that ancient artists would not believe possible. Techniques such as animation and 3D digital projection(投影) make art come alive.
Dunhuang Cave Paintings
Dunhuang Caves, which are protected ancient treasures in the Gobi desert in Northwest China, are filled with paintings and sculptures with lasting value. This artwork was created over a period of around 1,000 years.
The good news is for art lovers who cannot travel and for the caves. Scientists have created a 360-degree, 3D digital projection of the caves, which makes the artwork come alive. There is also a function(功能) that lets viewers zoom in and enjoy the paintings and sculptures in greater detail.
Digitising ancient art allows us to explore the ancient practices. It also makes the whole world understand the art while protecting the original artworks for the future.
Scientists at the University of Florida (UF) have grown plants in soil that came from the Moom. The plants didn't grow as well as those grew in soil from Earth, but the experiment marks an important step towards growing plants on the Moon.
The Moon's soil is called"regolith (风化层)", and there's not a lot of it on Earth. NASA (美国国家航空航天局) has most of it, which was collected over 50 years ago. Because the regolith is so valuable, it took the UF scientists 11 years to persuade NASA to allow them to use it.
NASA didn't give them much soil. The regolith came from three different NASA space flights —Apollo 11,12 and 17. The soil from Apollo 11 was taken from the top layer(层) of the Moon's surface. The rest came from deeper layers of the Moon's soil.
The scientists chose a special plant for their experiment. It's a small plant related to broccoli (西兰花) that can grow in very little soil. Scientists know a lot about the DNA of this plant, which helps them understand how it grows in the soil it's planted in.
By studying changes in the DNA of the plants growing in the Moon's soil, scientists may one day find out new ways to help plants grow better in the Moon's soil.
"The ability to take plants successfully with us to the Moon is how we'll grow our own food." said Dr. Rober Ferl, one of the researchers. "Showing that plants will grow in the Moon's soil is actually a huge step in that direction."

This is Tammela School, a primary school in Finland. Now the students a math class with their robot teacher.
The "teacher" is a small, blue machine about 25cm high, Reuters reported. Whenever students have problems, it helps them very patiently and never bored.

You've been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you're a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don't know what it means? Following some easy steps can help you.
●Say it
First sound it out. Then say it to yourself. It might sound like a word you know. Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don't know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read—you will have the word!
●Use context
If this doesn't work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. If the word shelter doesn't look familiar, look at the words around it. They might give you useful information and help you understand the whole sentence or passage.
●Use word parts
If the context doesn't help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don't know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, -er at the end of a word means "a person who does something". So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
If the three steps above don't work, you can use the fourth step—look it up! You can find the word in a dictionary—either a book or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don't know.
How to keep a good relationship with parents?
In my opinion, I have too many rules at home.
