You may not know how 1 our motherland is. With a history of more than 5,000 years, China has always been a great and magical land to foreigners. In 2008, a documentary ( 纪 录 片 ) 2 Wild China, co-produced by BBC and CCTV, was screened in the UK on BBC before the Beijing Olympics. There were six parts in the documentary-" Heart of the Dragon", "Shangri-La", "Tibet", "Beyond the Great Wall", "Land of the Panda" and "Tides of Change ( 潮 汐 更 迭 ) " . This 300-minute-long documentary 3 the people with China's fantastic wild life.
Wild China may be the best documentary on the natural history of China. This is a great 4 for you to know about the nature of this great country and meet some interesting and special creatures (物种) 5 here. You can see the beautiful Himalayas and Gobi Desert (戈壁沙漠). You can also enjoy the scenery (风景) of thousands of mountains in China, among which the most 6 is the Five Great Mountains. What's more, you can take a 7 at the hills of Southern China filled with rice fields. Also, you can discover the history of the Silk Road and how silk was 8 between China and other countries.
It is interesting to see what China looks like from the eyes of 9 . If you are too busy to travel around China, you are 10 because Wild China can take you on a trip of China and see the wonderful and different scenery.
On cold winter mornings, it can be difficult to come out from the blanket (毛毯). But according to researchers in Germany, there may be a reason why we find it hard to get up on winter days.
No, it's not laziness—it could be because we need more sleep during the cold months. A team of scientists studied the sleeping habits of almost 200 people. During the study, the participants (参与者) had been asked to go to sleep at the same time as usual, but they were told not to use alarms. The participants were tested for several days each month over a year.
The results showed that people got more REM sleep in winter than in spring—about 30 minutes more on average. REM, which means rapid eye movement, is important for brain development. Dreams usually happen during REM sleep. And we're more likely to remember these dreams.
There are different stages of our sleep, and REM usually starts 60 to 90 minutes after we go to sleep. However, we leave this stage several times, and most of our REM sleep actually happens in the second half of the night. The body tries to get as much REM sleep as it needs—so if you're getting more, then it's for a good reason, say experts.
All those who took part in the German study had sleep problems, and similar studies will need to be done on people who don't have problems sleeping, say the researchers.
However, they think their results might show it could be a good idea for us to change our sleeping habits at different times of year.
Do you love eating spicy foods? They seem to come from countries with a tropical climate. Two scientists, Jennifer Billing and Dr Paul Sherman, wondered why? They thought that healthy eating habits probably helped people survive. But how could eating "hot" foods in tropical climates make dinners healthier?
Hundreds of years ago people didn't know how some spices preserved foods. Since then, scientists have discovered that spice plants have some important chemicals. These chemicals can kill bacteria which spoil food. "Most common spices can kill 75 to 100 percent of the bacteria in food," explains one of the scientists. The bacteria grow more easily and spoil food more quickly at higher temperatures. For this reason, it is more difficult to keep food from spoiling in hot climates. Do you like your spicy foods? Your answer probably tells something about the country you come from if you like spicy foods. It is possible that hundreds of years ago, when there were no fridges, people in your country started using spices to keep the food from spoiling. The traditional spicy dishes helped those people to live longer, healthier lives. Today, in a time of fridges, the spices just make the food taste good.
Wearable technology has changed how we play, communicate, and track (跟踪) our health. Although it has many useful purposes, the wearable technology of tomorrow promises to be even more surprising.
Eyeglasses, an invention of the 13th century, are considered the world's earliest wearable technology. Modern wearable technology started to appear around 2008 with the introduction of fitness trackers (健身追踪器). This form of wearable technology tracks things like your heart rate and counts your steps. Smartwatches came out several years later. Besides doing the same things as fitness trackers, they also show you text messages and allow you to make calls. Nowadays, you can even buy smart clothing. Some of them, for example, vibrate (振动) whenever your exercise form is incorrect.
Wearable technology has other uses, too. It allows people to play video games on devices (设备) like VR headsets (耳机). And people in the medical industry have developed implantable (可移植的) devices. One example is a pill that sends health information from inside your' stomach to a smartphone.
Today's wearable technology may be interesting, but the future of wearable technology will be more exciting, such as self-powered shoes. Scientists are developing smart shoes. They will use your body as a power source. They come with batteries (电池) that can store the energy from your walking. Walking in these shoes would be like having a power bank on your feet that charges with every step you take.
Old wearable technology like glasses has helped countless people see better. Today, things like fitness trackers are changing how we understand our bodies. This makes you wonder: in what ways will future wearable technology improve our lives?
As climate change brings dangers to people, we are now facing another problem—underground climate change. It is reported from a research team from Northwestern University, US that with the development of cities, the rising underground temperature is causing the ground to heat up and deform (变形).
In the last three years, the team had put more than 150 temperature sensors (感应器) under Chicago. The places include subway tunnels, underground parking lots and basements (地下室) of buildings. The temperatures they recorded were surprising. For example, air temperatures in underground structures can be up to 25℃ higher compared to the undisturbed ground temperature. After collecting data in Chicago, the team created computer models to see how temperatures will influence the ground until 2051.
When heated, some soft materials may contract (收缩), and other materials, such as stone, may expand (膨胀) in size. The models showed that warmer temperatures can cause the ground to expand upward by as much as 1.2 centimeters, or sink downward by as much as 0.8 centimeters. This may even cause the ground to crack (开裂), leaving people who live and work above in dangerous situations.
"The effects can be very bad, but it takes a long time to see them." Rotta Loria, who led the study, said in a report. As scientists have already known a lot about underground climate change, future plans for cities should take it into consideration. Materials that take in heat can be used to keep the heat from entering the ground.
The team also pointed out that the rising temperature could be seen as an opportunity. City planners can try to collect heat underground and send it above for heating.
Recreational vehicles (RVs.房车) are popular with people who love taking trips.
In June 2020, travel vloggers(博主) Liu Yuxi and her husband Liu Hongjia (start) the "Rolling 30" trip. They drove 14.380 kilometers from Shanghai to Tibet along NationalHighway 318 to celebrate both turning 30 years old. "The trip lasted for 100 (day) and we spent about 35,000 yuan, and it was cheaper than other ways of travelling," Liu Hongjia says.
2021, they started travelling along the ancient Silk Road from Beijing to Xinjiang. The trip was named "Rolling Silk Road". Liu Yuxi still remembers how excited they were they saw Mount Qomolangma in their RV. It felt like mountain was close at hand. "At that time. I knew although our RV was small, it could take us to a big world. And the trip made life (wonder) and different," Liu Yuxi says.
Liu Yuxi also thinks RV travel is (real) suited for Liu Hongjia. He is also a photographer (摄影师). "As a photographer, he often wants to take photos of beautiful places in our country. ARV allows (he) to find the perfect places to take." Liu Yuxi says.
For Liu Yuxi and Liu Hongjia. RV travel makes their life more colorful by (put) their travel vlogging work, interests and life together. They can learn (enjoy) and value the simple things in life. And realize life is meant to be lived to the fullest, and that the world is full of wonders waiting to be explored.
