Sometimes it seems that time is flying. Perhaps it doesn't need to feel this way. Our experience of time can be 1 changed. How can we 2 time? Here are two suggestions.
Firstly, since we know that being in familiar situations makes 3 pass faster, we can make ourselves have as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and keep our minds 4 to new information, hobbies and skills. This will 5 the amount of information our minds do with and expand (增加) our experience of time.
Secondly, we can give our whole attention to an experience to 6 we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our 7 rather than through our thoughts. For example, on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to 8 . Look at the sky, or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open idea to your experiences helps take in more 9 and also has a time-expanding effect.
To a certain degree, we can understand and 10 our experience of time passing. It's possible for us to slow down time by expanding our experience of time.
When Chinese people talk about Chinese tea culture today, they won't miss an important person in Chinese history—Lu Yu, respected as a "Sage of Tea (茶圣)" for his achievements in the Chinese tea culture. He is best-known for The Classic of Tea, the first work on growing, making and drinking tea.
Lu was born in Jingling in 733A. D. As a child, he became a student of Zou Fuzi. Thanks to his teacher's guidance, he learnt a lot. He often made tea for his teacher. He also took care of his fellow students' health using his knowledge on tea and herbs (草药).
Lu Yu often went to the countryside to gather tea leaves and herbs. On one of those trips, Lu Yu found a spring. The water was quite clear and clean. When Lu made tea with this spring water, he found the tea tasted better than usual. From then on, he realized the importance of water quality in making tea. In 752 A. D, Lu Yu finished his studies and returned to Jingling, where he met Cui Guofu. Both men shared the same interests in tea, literature and poetry. They soon became good friends. Since then, the two spent much time travelling, drinking tea and writing poems together.
This period was important to Lu Yu as a man of literature. Cui, with his rich experience and skills in writing, became a coach of Lu. He provided necessary help with Lu's writing. It was during this time that Lu finally wrote the amazing work, The Classic of Tea.
① Lu Yu wrote The Classic of Tea.
② Lu Yu became a student of Zou Fuzi.
③ Lu Yu made friends with Cui Guofu
④ Lu Yu found water quality was important.
Dear Nicole,
How are you? This summer holiday my dad and I travelled to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. My dad and I have climbed many mountains in Scotland. Before the trip, we spent a few weeks training in the mountains of Switzerland.
Over 20, 000 people climb Kilimanjaro every year. Some do it because the countryside is very interesting, going from rainforest to snow at the top. Our reason was that you can get to the top without much equipment (装备) — ropes or special climbing tools. There are also few storms on the mountain, but we only learnt that later.
Climbing above 4, 000 metres can be difficult because. some people get terrible headaches. I was fine, but others in our group were sick. Dad felt awful as well, so I had to look after him as we got near the top. The other problem was that he lost his gloves. His hands got so cold that he couldn't feel them. This was dangerous, so I gave him a pair of my socks to keep his hands warm.
It took us six days and it was the best climbing experience ever. I'd do it again next year.
With love,
Zack
Professor Qiu Chengtong is a famous mathematician. He is also the dean (院长) of Qiuzhen College (求真学院) at Tsinghua University and Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖) winner. Recently, a newspaper office called Teens interviewed Professor Qiu about what math can bring us.
Teens: Good afternoon, Professor Qiu. Welcome to our office. Math knowledge can be centuries old, while fields like computer science change quickly. What do you think about this?
Qiu: Math gives a truth that lasts forever —a basic truth. Prime numbers (质数), for example, were thought of 2,000 years ago, but we still use them in computer science today. People are still exploring its power.
Teens: The S. -T. Yau High School Science Award (丘成桐中学科学奖) is the top math programme in China. What does it encourage students to be?
Qiu: The award, started 16 years ago, encourages students to be curious about research and work with their teachers. There are different areas to choose from, like math, biology and so on. This kind of training can help them to become researchers.
Teens: What does Qiuzhen College pay attention to in student training?
Qiu: It pays attention to whether students can work through hard times. Research is difficult. If students can't stand failures and keep trying, they'll fail. Patience is so important.
Teens: In today's world, math seems important. How should someone not good at math deal with this? Do you have any book recommendations?
Qiu: Every student has a different characteristic and personality, so it's best that they ask their teachers. There are many interesting math books for all ages worldwide. Read biographies (传记) of mathematicians and scientists to see how they worked hard and succeeded. This way, they'll find math is not scary —it's fun. Many successful mathematicians were not good at it in the beginning.
① To see how they worked hard. ② To see how they succeeded.
③ To see how clever they were. ④ To find math is fun.
