In the summer, Grandpa was an actor, and some Saturday afternoons he and his friend, Ms Gladys, would take Tamika to the 1 to watch him act on the stage (舞台).
It was Tamika's favorite place to go. Make-believe things happened there and she always had a great time. She would sit in the front row and watch Grandpa 2 another person, changing his face and the way he walked, talked and sang. And even when he turned into somebody else's grandpa, Tamika didn't 3 . It looked true and it felt true, but she knew it was just a play, and when it was over and all the actors came out to 4 and wave (挥手), she would clap (拍手) so hard that her hands hurt.
One day, Tamika went to Grandpa's room to ask for a story. She stopped at the door 5 Grandpa was rehearsing (排演). He had his book in his hand and he was reading his lines (台词) aloud. Then he stopped reading and looked into the mirror, 6 changing his face into a face that Tamika had never seen before. It was a hard face with a tight (紧绷的)mouth and cold, cold eyes. It was a face that could never love her or 7 .
Tamika stood watching 8 saying a word, as Grandpa changed his face back and read some more lines from his book. Her legs were stiff (僵硬的) from standing, but she 9 to go back to her room and sat on the bed. It seemed that her stomach was filled with plenty of strange things that made her 10 . She had not known that Grandpa could look like that, and now that she did know she couldn't be sure he might not someday look at her with that face.
The Palace Museum is becoming waste-free as the 720,000-square-meter structure has managed to reduce the number of rubbish cans to 110 sets in areas open to the public. The number was 310 sets in January 2020, when a zero-waste program was started. While protecting the six-century-old historical relic, the action also helps visitors and tourists get into the habit of producing less waste.
According to China News, four types of rubbish cans have been set up following Beijing's rules on the management of household waste. Cleaning workers also check them to make sure all rubbish is correctly divided. The rubbish is later transported to different places to be dealt with. Besides, the museum recycled more than 32,000 plastic bottles to make cultural and creative products between June 2021 and October 2023, reducing pollution greatly.
The Palace Museum is taking a careful, science-based way to deal with the waste. The aim is to reduce the production of waste that needs to be burned and bring the amount of such waste as close to zero as possible.
So far, about 3,000 museum members, 40,000 tourist guides, and 21 million visitors have taken part in the campaign. "We hope that more people will play their part to make the Palace Museum a cleaner and better place", said the museum.
Rachel Louise Carson was born on May 27th, 1907 in Pennsylvania. She grew up on a farm where she learned about nature and animals. Rachel loved reading and writing stories when she was young. At a very early age, she wanted to be a writer some day. Her story first appeared in a children's magazine when she was ten years old. Rachel attended Pennsylvania College where she majored in (主修) biology.
Her first book, Under the Sea Wind came out in 1941. In 1948, Miss Carson began working on The Sea Around Us. She collected information from more than one thousand places to write The Sea Around Us. When the book came out in 1951, it won the National Book Award. In 1955, she published (出版) another book The Edge of the Sea.
Rachel Carson's most famous book, Silent Spring came out in 1962. She spent four years collecting research materials and writing the book. She named it Silent Spring referring to birds' deaths due to pesticides (由于杀虫剂). In this book, she pointed out that the use of some kinds of pesticides like DDT, would cause, the number of birds to decline because it would kill them as well. Finally, in November 1969, the United States government decided that the use of DDT must stop in two years.
In 1964, Carson died of cancer. In 1972, the United States noticed that DDT could no longer be used. Today, thanks to Rachel Carson, many more people care about the environment. They work to protect it. Rachel Carson has been regarded as a great environmentalist and writer. She is remembered by the world.
Invasive species (入侵物种) are plants and animals which arrive in an area where they are not native, usually due to human activity. They are often able to grow quickly in their new homes because they have no natural enemies. As a result, they may replace or damage native plants and animals which live in the same environment.
Red squirrels used to be a common sight in Britain. Then, in the 1870s, grey squirrels were introduced from North America because rich people thought they looked fashionable in their large gardens. At the first sight, the two species of squirrels are similar. They both have a long tail, large eyes and small ears. However, the red squirrel has a length of around 19 to 23 cm and a body weight of 250 to 340 grams. Grey squirrels are larger. Their length measures between 23 and 30 cm and their body weighs between 400 and 600 grams. That allows them to store more fat and helps them to survive (生存) hard winters, making it possible for them to win the battle (战役) between the two species finally.
Three more differences explain why red squirrels have lost out in the competition with grey squirrels. First, red squirrels live high up in the trees, while grey squirrels spend more time on the ground. Any loss of forest habitat (栖息地) greatly affects red squirrels. Another reason is that grey squirrels can get used to a new environment more easily. For example, they are able to use food provided by humans. What's worse, both squirrels carry Para poxvirus (副痘病毒), which doesn't affect grey squirrels but is deadly to the reds.
It seems that scientists can't do much to help red squirrels survive in Britain. Some politicians support destroying populations of grey squirrels, but many British people say that is cruel. Red squirrels have been successfully reintroduced from other countries.
They are now protected in places where there are no grey squirrels.
The Best Inventions of 2023
Every year, TIME magazine puts out its list of the year's best inventions. Some of these help us solve problems. Others make life easier or more fun. Here are 4 of them.
A Cooler Color | Usually, the paint on a white building can throw back 80% to 90% of the sunlight that hits it. Now a new kind of whiter paint is made of chemicals that better reflect (反射) sunlight. It reflects up to 98% of the sunlight, which could cut down the use of air-conditioners by 40%. In this way, it can keep cities cooler. |
Virtual Animals | At the Hologram Zoo, the animals are not real—You see a group of elephants running toward you and then running over you. It's really about showing people things they have never seen before. Visitors meet lifelike wonders such as giraffes and whales (鲸鱼) in action. It's a way for the public to see wildlife. |
The Language of Song | Now you can take music lessons on a smartphone by using Duolingo App's music feature (功能). It uses an on-screen piano to teach basics of music. It's very easy. Just match sounds with notes and play along. You don't need natural talent to learn music. |
Easy Walking | These might look like skates, but they're actually battery-powered (电池供电的)shoes with wheels. The shoes use AI to sense when you're speeding up or slowing down, and control themselves accordingly. The wheels will lock when you're taking the stairs (楼梯). With Moonwalkers, you can walk faster without being tired out. |
One sunny day, my friends and I decided to go on a journey through the forest. We imagined all the exciting things we might discover. As we w , we felt the spirit of adventure(探险) in the air.
Suddenly, we heard a n coming from behind some bushes. We rushed over and found a person l on the ground. He was disabled and in trouble. We felt w but knew that we had to make a decision right away. We stayed with the person, comforting him w one of us coughed to get his attention. We called for help on a p and explained the situation. It was terrible to see someone hurt, but we did our best to help. When the d arrived, we felt relaxed. They knew what to do and took over from there. It was a valuable l for us: learning how to help someone in need gives us a strong feeling of satisfaction.
In the end, our experience turned i a different kind of adventure, one where we helped someone and showed kindness to others. We realized that by working t and staying calm, we could make a big difference when trouble arose.
