"To the pig house," replied Mrs. Arable. "Some pigs were born last night."
"I don't see why he needs an ax," continued Fern.
"Well." said her mother, "one of the pigs is very small and weak, so your father has decided to do away with it."
"Do away with it?" shouted Fern. "You mean kill it? Just because it's smaller than the others?" Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. Fern's shoes were wet by the time she caught up with her father.
"Please don't kill it!" she sobbed (哭诉), "____"
"Fern," he said softly, "you will have to learn to control yourself."
"Control myself?" shouted Fern. "This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself."
"Fern," said Mr. Arable, "I know more about raising pigs than you do. A weak pig makes trouble. Now run along!"
"The pig couldn't decide whether it was born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?" said Fern.
Mr. Arable smiled. "Certaınly not," he said. "All right. You go back to the house and I will bring the pig when I come in. I'll let you keep it. Then you'll see what trouble a weak pig can be." When Mr. Arable returned to the house half an hour later, he carried a box under his arm. He set it down at Fern's chair. When Fern came downthe stairs, she saw the box. Then she opened it. Money can't buy you happiness? Well, what if it could? Not by making it or spending it, but by giving it away.
In an experiment in Switzerland, researchers gave each of the 50 volunteers 20 yuan every week for four weeks and asked half of the volunteers to spend the money on themselves and write down how they spent the money. But researchers asked the other half to spend the money on another person.
After that, all 50 volunteers did the same task in a laboratory. They needed to think of a person who they would like to give money to. Then they had to decide how much money, from 3 yuan to 20 yuan, they wanted to give away. While the volunteers thought about this, researchers studied their brain activity using an MRI machine.
The results showed two things. First, the 25 volunteers who gave their money to others during the four weeks were more generous (慷慨的) and chose to give more money to others in the laboratory task. Second, those same people were much happier than the people who once spent the money on themselves. In the experiment, the volunteers must give money away.
But would you like to do this in your daily life? Can you really make yourself happy by giving? The answer is yes, but remember to start small. You can start by giving £1 to a homeless person. Little by little, you can try to change your habits so you save money to give away. For example, stop buying something that you don't really need. Then you can save some money and give it to people in need.
Learning to give away money is all about changing the way you behave. It's about living with less money and being more generous. And this will make you happy.
Du Fu, one of the greatest Chinese poets, is well-known in China. Recently, the BBC's (英国广播公司) one-hour documentary Du Fu: China's Greatest Poet is spreading through the Internet.

C. In his poems, he cared about his country as well as the people.

He then asked me if I had ever 10 the same thing at school. That made me stop. Of course, I had!
If any of my past teachers are 11 this, I want to say sorry if I sometimes played around in the class 12 you were teaching. I didn't think how that would make you feel. I promise I will do my best to be a good 13 in the future. Please help us when we don't understand, and most 14 don't be quick to be angry when we fail. 15 of us are perfect but with your help we can be successful.
