The Italian city of Venice is a city with only a few 10 . There are no cars in the city center. 11 cars, water taxis and buses carry people along the city's canals (运河). But they cause pollution, 12 to the water. English engineers designed a solar powered (利用太阳能的) water taxi. The water taxi 13 run for a day after being recharged (充电).
Planes also cause air and noise pollution. Designing an environmentally friendly airplane is a real 14 . Some airplane companies have 15 to solve the problems. Swiss engineers have already developed a solar airplane. This plane holds the world record for the longest solar powered flight.

There are lots of things that are good for your brain. Reading, for example, helps your brain to grow and work better. Solving puzzles (拼图) can help, too. Scientists now find out another way of bringing health to brains: exercising.
Babies need exercise for their brains to fully grow. Meanwhile, exercise improves children's attention and helps them do better at school. For the elderly, exercise can help to keep their minds sharp. They can notice or understand things quickly.
Exercise also improves blood flow to the brain. The brain needs oxygen (氧气) from blood. Without oxygen, the brain would stop working.
Babies do not have to try to exercise. They are almost always moving. Developing new skills like sitting, standing, walking, running and jumping forces their brains to grow.
As children get older, exercise is still important for the brains. Scientists did an experiment. They found two groups of children between 7 and 9 years old. One group exercised for an hour after school. The other group did not. Scientists then gave both groups a number of brain tests. The kids who had exercised were quicker to learn than those who had not exercised.
Finally, exercise helps adults think quickly. The older people become, the smaller parts of the brain they will get. ‘This can make it harder for old people to remember things. For example, grown-ups who exercised for 30 minutes, five times a week did better on brain tests than grown-ups who did not exercise as much.
Exercise is also good for the patients suffering from Alzheimer's diseases (阿尔茨海默症), which harms the brain and causes people to lose their memories.
"Save the whales!" That's what the picture on Jake Smith's bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important to show what he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighborhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whales' coming. A group of the animals were swimming close to the beach in Jake's hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie.
Then one whale swam in the direction directly towards land. It came in with the waves and when the waves receded (退去), it stayed. Its huge body rested on the land. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers (救援者). A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the animal. Jack and his family couldn't do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could help in some ways.
Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed out to the sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water—a thank-you to those who had worked so hard to save its life.

①Most of us cannot imagine modern life without social media (社交媒体). We use it almost every day in order to keep up with what is happening in our friends' lives, or find out the latest information. Although it has a bad influence if we don't use it properly, social media has done more good than harm.
②The greatest advantage is that we can connect with people much more easily. We are still able to keep in touch with our friends if they are far away. With social media, friendship goes beyond geography. We are able to find friends old and new. Also, it makes easier for us to make friends, especially for those who are afraid of making friends face to face. Are you shy? If yes, social media has probably helped.
③Social media is also ideal (理想的) for making yourself heard. Anyone with a voice can express it. Anyone with a talent is free to show it. Everyone is the new content creator. Moreover, anyone with a smartphone and the Internet can be a reporter. As a result, it has become much faster to cover the news than ever before.
④Social media, on the other hand, can make us less confident sometimes. A 2021 study published by the Public Library of Science, found that the more a person uses social media, the sadder he feels about his own life. One reason for this is that people around us put colorful information and perfect pictures online in order to show off their best moment. So we often get a distorted sense of how wonderful their lives are compared to our own.
⑤Social media does not cause sadness; it simply provides another tool for us to use. Is it good or bad? Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says, "What is interesting is the power and influence of social media… We must try to use social media in a good way." After all, you decide how you use this powerful tool.
C Recording the best side of our life. D. Expressing our voices freely.
Chinese opera is one of the oldest art forms in the world, which has been considered as one of the treasures of Chinese culture. Different parts of China have their own local opera and there are more than 300 different kinds.
Sichuan has its own opera. Actors in Sichuan opera wear specially painted masks (面具) on their faces in many different colors. They will suddenly change completely, and all the time, the actor is dancing beautifully with many difficult movements. Some actors can change face ten times in twenty seconds, and yet you never see their fingers touch their face.
Of course, you realize that the actor has many different masks, one on the top of the other. They are made from very thin silk in bright colors. It the actor turns his back to you, you think he is changing his mask while you cannot see him doing it. Then he shakes his head suddenly and his mask has changed, like magic, into another one! You cannot believe your eyes, and yet it has happened!
. It is a special skill. It takes much time to learn it perfectly. The exact method used by the actors is a closely guarded secret that is only passed on from father to son or master to apprentice (学徒). As China's influence develops around the world, Chinese culture travels too.
A. People actually love this old art form. B. Different colors have different meanings. C. Changing the masks without being seen is not easy. D. But when he turns again to face you, it's still the same mask. E. This old art form is deeply loved by people all over the world. E. In Sichuan Opera, there is a performance called face-changing. G.
