Years ago, I was on a train ride into the city when I noticed a family getting on the train. There were two little girls, their mom, and her friend, all of them with big 1 . From 2 they looked like, they were going to be away for several days. One of the girls sat next to an older gentleman, who started talking with 3 .
As the train ride went on, the little girl said that they were4 their way to the children' s hospital in the city, where her sister Hayley who was badly ill was 5 treatment(治疗). Without6 more about it, the man spoke with the girl on and off during the journey.
Towards the 7 of the ride, the man started to 8 something on a piece of paper. When the train stopped at his station, he walked over to the girl's mom and handed her the paper, which actually was a9 , and said,"That's for Hayley."Then he 10 the train before the mom could say anything.
As the mom finally realized it was a check, she was very11 . Then she quickly looked up, hoping to stop the man 12 he disappeared from view, but he was already 13 .

My name is Sparky and I work for Ms. Toni Graham. I stay with her at home every day. My trainer calls what I do"work"but I think my job is fun. I really like my job: I do many different things for Ms. Toni every day. She says I have changed many things, so her daily life is easier.
Ms. Toni gets an illness that makes her hands shake. She isn't able to stand or sit for a long time. On a bad day, Ms. Toni can lose her balance and fall. Whenever she drops something, I pick it up for her. It's part of my job.
Another part of my job is to take a walk with Ms. Toni around town every afternoon. Exercise is very important for her health so we never miss a day. We often see a new sight along our way. Ms. Ton i rests when we get back. She needs my cooperation(协作) during this time. I help her by being very quiet. I stay by the front door and keep my eye on things. If Ms. Toni needs me, she rings a bell.
Sometimes Ms. Toni can't sleep. At these times she likes me to hang out and relax with her. It's said that petting me keeps her cool. ____. She talks to me and brushes me. This is one of the best parts of my job.
I am very lucky to be a part of Ms. Toni's life. People who have a hard time with day-to-day chores can become sad and lonely. We can help them feel happy.
①People normally think of dogs as man's best friends, but to Brian Wilson, his two pet parrots are his best friends.
②It all began when Brian was still a fire fighter. A terrible car accident happened to him. After several months in hospital, Brian's doctors said that he would never talk or work again and would have to spend the rest of his life in hospital.

④Brian was so thankful that he decided to set up a home for birds which are not wanted by their owners. Now 15 years later, his house is home to about 80 birds like several macaws, cockatoos and African grays. The birds fly around from room to room, some cackling, others talking like humans. Though they all have big cages, Brian lets them fly free ly inside the house.
⑤Over the years, Brian has developed a special relationship with birds. The birds who bite other humans, seem to like him and can get along with him well. He is now called a bird whisperer(鸟语者).
⑥Brian pays for most of the costs of looking after the birds from his own money, but he also ac cept money from other people who love and care about birds. He and his birds also make money by performing at birthday parties, weddings and other social events. For people who want to adopt(领养) Brian's bird, they have to volunteer at the foundation for three months, before they can take the pet home.
As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing success as well as danger.
Scientists have found out that the radiation(辐射) is the greatest danger to spacemen in space. When spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of the radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. The harm(伤害) of the radiation won't be found until their children even grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but no really effective medicine has been found so far.
第 5 页 共 8 页Space rubbish is also a great danger to spacemen. It's reported that there were 9,000 man-made things flying in space. About 30% of these are satellites, 10% are spaceships, and the rest are space rubbish. An explosion(爆炸) in space in 1999 made a cloud of 300, 000 fragments, each at least 4m m in size. A small piece of these even knocked a spaceship window and caused some damage(损坏).
Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working to deal with space rubbish. Although space is really dangerous, it interests many people on the earth. In the near future, it may become possible for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to leave the earth and live in space in a few years. So we should do something to help improve the space environment.
