"Today, Niki will clean the floor," our mother said. It was time to do our weekly housework. Our mother already had everything planned.
I started to sweep the floor. My brother Ben took the detergent (洗衣粉) to clean the windows and my sister Sarah took out the iron (熨斗). All of us had something to do.
However, as I was not good at cleaning, I did not do a good job. In the end, my mother had to clean the floor again. Ben was clumsy (笨拙的). He spilled (洒落) the detergent all over the floor and the sofa. My mother was exasperated. She decided to take over. Sarah was the only one who was doing a good job. She ironed one piece of clothing after another. However, when she was ironing my mother's dress, her favorite advertisement (广告) came on television. Putting down everything, she watched the advertisement for a new toy carefully. She did not notice the smoke coming from the iron until she heard our mother shouting.
Our mother was so angry that she took over the ironing, too. She asked Sarah to be more careful next time.
Finally, we finished doing the weekly housework. Although we were not good at doing housework, we learned a lot from doing it. And we learned it was very important to do some housework.
The process (过程) of donating blood doesn't take very long. If you're willing to donate (捐献) blood, you can go to a nearby Red Cross donation center.
When you arrive at the center, you can first read some information about donating blood. Then you need to fill in a form and tell the doctor your medical history. After that you'll receive a health check. It's important for doctors to know your health condition (状况). ____
When it's time to donate, you'll sit in a comfortable chair or lie on the bed. A nurse will clean part of your arm and use a needle (针) to get the blood into a plastic bag. Several minutes later, the process is over. The doctor will place a small bandage over the needle mark.
Before you leave, you'll be given biscuits and milk, as well as a donation record card. It's important to avoid too much exercise a few hours after donating blood. Remember that the Red Cross does not pay for blood. All donors (捐献者) are volunteers.

③fill in a form ④ let the nurse get your blood
There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the best way is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
According to the WHO, over half people in the world may be sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的). Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure.
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you'll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, "Sleep is like a credit card (信用卡). When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back."
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person said, "Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea and it is held by people with no imagination. You'll be able to do more."
①tiredness ②traffic accidents ③foolishness ④medical problems.
Many kids help their parents with chores, such as doing the dishes, cleaning the living room and taking out the rubbish. But some people do not think that kids should get rewards by doing chores. Susie Walton, an expert, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't important unless you can get something."Running any kind of family is teamwork," Walton says."A home is a living place for everyone in the family. "
Other people believe that getting money or other rewards makes kids do chores happily and it also teaches them real world lessons about what they need to do to make money. There are also apps(应用软件) now. Kids can change them into real life rewards either online or in the real world. "We hope kids can do more chores so they can get more rewards," one man says.
