—No it's Lucy's. My coat is blue.
At the age of seven, I started school in London. There I met a teacher, Mr. King. He 1 my life. Mr. King taught me math. He was 2 . He often told us funny stories. So his 3 made us excited.
One day, Mr. King 4 me while I was on my way home. He 5 a piece of paper with some math exercises on it. With a smile, he asked, "Would you like to have a try, my kid?" I was a bit 6 and took those exercises home. I worked hard that night.
The next day, when I gave the answers to him, he 7 checked them and said, "Well done! I 8 your love for math will help you with the rest."
After Mr. King encouraged me, I spent all my free time on the exercises. A week later, I succeeded! Mr. King gave more 9 to me, expecting me to make great progress. Every time I worked out the 10 , I had a lot of fun. Exercises became harder and I put more effort into math.
I enjoyed math. It was Mr. King that opened the door to math for me and led me in. I was thankful to Mr. King.
MESSAGE BOARD April 15, 2024 19:00 Reading 90 |
Are you an organized student? I always admire the students who can organize their things and time well. Lately, I've started keeping a study diary to get myself organized. Because it's helpful. What are your ideas? Please share some opinions below. Posted by Kate |
Ann In my opinion, keeping organized helps us review our lessons in a short time. Don't leave all the problems until the night before the exams! |
Kate Thanks a lot! I agree. @Ann |
Hana I always spend about five minutes before bedtime tidying up my things. I throw away things I don't need and put what I need in the proper place. |
Kate I think it's a good habit to tidy up the things every day. It can help us save much time. @ Hana |
Mike My advice is to have a notice board in your bedroom. Use board pens to write down something important and make sure they can remind us all the time. The most wonderful part is when I take off something from the board! |
Kate Wow, I'll take a try. @Mike |
A little boy was playing in his sandbox on a Saturday morning. While he was building roads and houses in the soft sand, he discovered a large stone in the middle of the sandbox.
The little boy pushed and pulled, but every time he thought he had made some progress, the stone tipped (倾斜) and then fell back into the sandbox. The little boy tried his best, but his only reward (回报) was to have the stone roll back.
Finally the boy cried. All that time the boy's father watched him from living room window. At the moment tears fell, his father came to the boy and the sandbox. Gently but surely he said, "Son, why didn't you use all the strength that you had?" The boy said sadly, "But I did, daddy, I did! I used all the strength that I had!" "No, son," corrected the father kindly. "You didn't ask me." With that, the father reached down, picked up the stone and removed (移开) it from the sandbox.
Do you have "stones" in your life that need to be removed? Are you discovering that you are too weak to lift them? There is one who is always ready to give us the strength we need. Isn't it funny how we try so hard to do things on our own?
Working on a team is a good thing, but sometimes it can bring you some trouble. To create a successful team, good communication is the most necessary thing for both team members and leaders. Here are some helpful suggestions.
Don't criticize (批评) any people. When someone on your team does something wrong, don't criticize him. You can help him find out the reasons and then help him solve the problem. Criticizing your team members too often may make them keep away from you. As a result, you may feel lonely. |
Think about other people's ideas carefully. When someone tells you about his ideas, you should think about them carefully, no matter how silly they may seem. This shows you are interested in his ideas, and it will make him feel good. |
Listen to other people actively. When someone is speaking to you, you need to listen to him actively. If you're unclear about something, you should ask him about it. By doing this can clear up your confusion (困惑) before moving on. |
Share your ideas with other people. When you have a new idea, talk about it with team members. This helps to improve the idea. Besides, it also helps to improve relationships with your team members. |
Most children are taught the virtue (美德) of honesty from stories. The well-known story of Pinocchio teaches the importance of telling the truth. Every time Pinocchio lies, his nose grows longer and longer. Another story is about the boy who "cried wolf". In the end, he loses all his sheep and the trust of his fellow villagers because he tells lies many times. These kinds of stories show children that "honesty is the best policy". Why do so many people still lie? The fact is that people lie for many reasons.
One reason people lie is to avoid a mistake. While it is true that everyone does something wrong from time to time, some people do not have the courage to admit (承认) their mistakes because they are afraid they will be punished. For example, students might lie to their teachers about unfinished homework. They might say that they left the homework at home, in fact, they did not do the homework at all. These students do not want to get in trouble, so they make up a pretense—a lie—to save face.
Another reason for lying has to do with self-protection. Parents, especially those with young children, may teach their children to use this kind of "protective" lie in certain situation. What should children do if a stranger calls while the parents are out? Many parents teach their children to explain that their mother and father are too busy to come to the phone at that time. In this situation, protective lying can mean greater safety.
People lie for many reasons, both good and bad. Lying to keep the peace or to stay safe can have good results. However, lying to stay out of trouble can lead to more trouble in the end.
AI may be one of the greatest inventions because it can improve people's daily life and bring efficiency (效率) to lots of industries.
Like any other technology, AI will also bring risks. In February 2018, a group of AI scientists got together to discuss the problems of AI. They found that AI could help us, but also caused us problems. Their biggest worry was that criminals (罪犯) could use AI for bad purposes. They could use AI to create websites to steal people's personal information. Another possibility is that AI programs could break into computer safety systems.
There are some other concerns as well. It is possible that AI could create unreal videos. There is a company, in fact, that had developed a program that can "Clone" anyone's voice by studying a 3.7-second audio sample (音频样本).
Some leaders in the technology world care about AI. People like Bill Gates and Musk hope the industry can be more regulated (规范) because there are few laws on the use of AI.
In March 2018, the European Union planned to set up a group to discuss the dangers of AI. They also wanted to suggest some regulations that could help us keep it safe for humans.
My best friend Mike is a 15-year-old boy. We are in the same class. He is never late for school and he (do) well in all his lessons. He is always the (one) to get to school. He likes helping others. My math is very poor, he often helps me with it after class. His parents are both teachers and they are (real) busy, so he often helps do the housework at home. He is a little shorter but he is (strong) than me. He likes playing football but I'm more interested art. He gets on well with our (classmate). Everyone in our class likes (he). But now it's time to graduate. Mike and I are going to (difference) high schools. In the future, he wants to be a policeman and I hope to be artist. We believe our friendship will be forever.
