One day, Ray was preparing to welcome them as usual: cleaning the house and cooking delicious food. While he was working, he lost his favorite watch which was a gift from his deceased (已故的) wife. A moment later, he rushed back to his grandfather, "I found it!" he shouted. Ray was surprised and asked8 he made it. The little boy replied, "I stood in the barn alone, making no noise, and tried my best to keep silent. After a few minutes, I heard the sound of tick tick. At last, I 9 the watch from the hay (干草)." After hearing his words, Ray hugged the little boy and thanked him very much.

A salt seller used to carry big bags of salt on his donkey's (驴的) back as he made his way to the market every day. On the way there, they had to cross a river. One day, the donkey took a sudden fall into the river. The big bags of salt also fell into the water. The salt seller didn't notice, but some of the salt dissolved (溶解)in the water, making the bags much lighter to carry. The donkey realized this and felt much more comfortable on his way to the market.
The next day, the donkey did the same thing, except this time, he fell in the water on purpose. Again, the bags were lighter and easier to carry.
The salt seller soon found out what was going on and decided to teach his donkey a lesson. The next day, he put two big bags of cotton on the donkey's back. Again the donkey played the same trick (把戏),hoping that the bags would become even lighter.
But the cotton that fell into the water instead became very heavy to carry. The donkey could only pay for his dishonesty, walking slowly with the wet cotton on his back.
Sometimes, we might feel lucky to take shortcuts (捷径) or cheat when we have a lot of hard work to do. However, taking shortcuts and cheating will often come back to harm us later. It is better to simply work honestly.
About half of Chinese adults sleep less than eight hours every night, a new report said. The report was based on a survey of 6,168 people aged 18 to 70 from July to November, 2022.
People with lower level of education have less sleep and lower sleep quality (质量), according to the report. Those with higher level of education may sleep longer and better.
The report showed a relationship between a person's income (收入) and the quality of their sleep. People from families making less than 3,000 yuan ($435) a month get the least amount (数量) of sleep and experience the worst sleep quality, while those with mid-level incomes sleep longer and generally reported good-quality sleep. For people making more than 10,000 yuan a month, they sleep less than those with mid-level incomes, but they reported a better quality of sleep.
The report also found that people who exercise often enjoy the best sleep quality, with 85 percent of them saying they have "very good" sleep quality. More than 80 percent said they can fall asleep in less than half an hour, and only 1.8 percent said they have trouble falling asleep.
University students sleep the longest, followed by white-collar (白领) workers, blue-collar workers and jobless people. However, university students usually stay up late, which results from the use of phone s and computers, over-thinking, stress and their sleeping environments. Sleep is important in improving health and memory. Although many university students know that good sleeping habits are conducive to good health, many say they don't change their bad habits.

Zebra crossings (斑马线) are an important part of city traffic. They serve as safety lines for people crossing the street and a symbol of a city's culture. However, in recent years, most people have been used to using phones while crossing the street. It is unsafe and it may slow down traffic.
To deal with the problem, the Star City government started to take action and introduced a new rule in April, 2024. According to the rule, if people use phone s while crossing the street, they may face a fifty-yuan fine. If they don't want to pay, they can choose to stand by the zebra crossings for an hour as a traffic guide. To increase public understanding of the new rule, the government also puts up posters at bus stops and on websites(网站).
According to the number showed by the government, more than 20% of the traffic accidents in Star City last year happened on zebra crossings. The city hopes the new rule can help to cut down that number. "It is important to correct wrong behaviors (行为) on the road. Both drivers and walkers will benefit from (受益于) it," an officer says.
