It was a rainy, windy October afternoon. Garth stood outside his house with a wide 1 . This was perfect weather for testing his new invention—Umbrella Hat. He could hardly wait to see whether it could keep the rain off. He carefully 2 the hat on his head and started walking purposefully along the street. It worked!
Suddenly, three boys in his neighborhood appeared and stopped him. Todd, the biggest one, pulled his Umbrella Hat off his head 3 .
"What's this?" he asked.
"It's an Umbrella Hat. You can wear it on rainy days and... " Garth said.
The boys4 . "Will anyone wear that stupid thing?" Todd threw the hat onto the ground and they ran off.
Garth 5 his Umbrella Hat from the ground in tears. "Maybe Todd was 6 in reality, who would ever need my invention?" He lowered his head and thought to himself.
Suddenly he looked up and saw a 7 looking at him. "I was just leaving my house when I saw you and those boys. Are you okay?"Then she saw the 8 Umbrella Hat and asked,
"Er...what's that?"
"It's my Umbrella Hat. I thought of it and made it myself... " answered Garth.
"What a creative 9 you have! Don't ever let stupid boys put you down! Keep inventing and one day you will 10 something great!" said the lady.

What can we do with e-waste?
E-waste is harmful to the environment. Repeat the three words in our life: reduce, reuse and recycle. Here are some examples.
◆Jack
created solar lanterns with e-waste
◆Mr Black
turned about 79,000 tons of e-waste into medals
◆Mixed Reality Lab
designed educational toys with e-waste for poor kids
◆Alex Lin
recycled about 136 tons of broken computers into ones that can be used again
①One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mum. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn't notice three hours pass by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, Mum ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realized that although I made a terrible pie, I really enjoyed the process.
②The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences during the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just concentrate on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.
③ But in this busy world, we see many successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process? Well, the question has the answer in itself.
④Don't always compare yourself with others. Success means different things to us. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power.
⑤Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.
⑥Reward yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them.
It was about ten at night, and it was cold. A policeman moved along the street. Then he suddenly saw a man standing near the door of a closed restaurant.
As the policeman walked towards him, the man spoke quickly. "It's all right, officer," he said, "I'm just waiting for a friend, my best friend Jimmy Wells. Twenty years ago, we agreed to meet here at ten tonight. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn't it?" With these words, the man lit a cigar (雪茄). The light showed a pale face with a little scar near his right eye.
"It sounds interesting," said the policeman. "If he isn't here at ten, are you going to leave?" "No." said the man. "I will wait half an hour, at least. I'm sure Jimmy will come tonight." "I will go on my way," the policeman said. "Hope your friend comes. Good night, sir." "Good night, officer."
There was now a cold rain falling. About twenty minutes he waited, a tall man came, hurrying "Is that you, Bob?" he asked.
"Is that you, Jimmy Wells?" cried the man at the door.
"It's Bob! I was sure to find you here. Well, well, well! Twenty years is a long time. Come on, Bob. Let's go somewhere else and have a long talk."
The two men started walking along the street, arm in arm. At the corner there stood a shop with bright lights. When they came near, each turned to look at the other's face.
Bob stopped suddenly. "You're not Jimmy Wells," he said. "Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change a man's nose."
"It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one," said the tall man.
"You've been under arrest (逮捕) for ten minutes, Bob. Now before we go on to the police station, here's a note for you. You may read it here at the window."
Bob opened the little piece of paper. His hands began to shake as he read.
"Bob, I was at the place on time. When you lit your cigar, I saw it was the face of the man wanted by Chicago police. Somehow I couldn't do it myself, so I went around and got another policeman to do the job." —Jimmy

What time is it? The answer you give can be different, because you are in different Earth's time zones (时区).
Scientists are now thinking of creating a lunar (月球的) time zone. At the moment, astronauts are using time zones of their own countries. But there could be safety problems caused by the differences in time-telling.
Setting up a lunar time zone is not easy. Since gravity is weaker in the Moon, clocks run a bit faster there. After 24 hours, a lunar clock would be 56 microseconds ahead of a clock on the Earth. Another point to consider is that a full day on the Earth is about 24 hours between two sunsets. This means that lunar nights can be around two weeks long. With all this to think about, scientists need to decide whether it would be better to follow a time zone on the Earth, or for the Moon to have its own special zone.
For example, who should be responsible for keeping the time zone going? And how can it be made practical for astronauts to use?
There are more countries planning Moon trips in the future. The idea of creating a time zone on the Moon would make these easier.
A. Scientists must consider other problems too.
B. It is difficult for astronauts to live on the Moon.
C. Gravity influences how quickly or slowly time passes.
D. But how could you tell the time if you aren't anywhere on the Earth?
E. While on the Moon it is nearly 709 hours, about 29.5 Earth days.
F. They believe it would be better for astronauts to communicate by using Moon Time.

Zhuazhou is a special custom practised on a baby's first birthday in China. (early) record of this custom can go back to the Song Dynasty, about 1,000 years ago. In the late Qing Dynasty, the custom got popular in Beijing.
The Zhuazhou ceremony usually (take) place before lunchtime on the baby's first birthday. Different items (物品) (put) on a table. Then parents seat the baby in front of the table. Without help from anybody, the baby is free (choose) anything in front of him or her. The item he or she chooses is used to predict his or her (interesting) and job in the future.
The items on the table can be many things. There might be a stamp, a pen, an abacus, and so on. Choosing the stamp means the baby will be an officer in the future. the baby picks a pen, he or she may become a writer. The abacus (probable) means the baby will be good with numbers.
Zhuazhou is still followed today. However, the items have changed to some degree. Many parents put a computer mouse, a coloured pen, a CD or a violin in front of (they) babies. These things stand for modern jobs. For example, a computer mouse means the baby will be engineer.
Today's items at the Zhuazhou ceremony are different those before, but a family's good wishes for a baby are always the same—to have a bright future.
