It was about ten at night, and it was cold. A policeman moved along the street. Then he suddenly saw a man standing near the door of a closed restaurant.
As the policeman walked towards him, the man spoke quickly. "It's all right, officer," he said, "I'm just waiting for a friend, my best friend Jimmy Wells. Twenty years ago, we agreed to meet here at ten tonight. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn't it?" With these words, the man lit a cigar (雪茄). The light showed a pale face with a little scar near his right eye.
"It sounds interesting," said the policeman. "If he isn't here at ten, are you going to leave?" "No." said the man. "I will wait half an hour, at least. I'm sure Jimmy will come tonight." "I will go on my way," the policeman said. "Hope your friend comes. Good night, sir." "Good night, officer."
There was now a cold rain falling. About twenty minutes he waited, a tall man came, hurrying "Is that you, Bob?" he asked.
"Is that you, Jimmy Wells?" cried the man at the door.
"It's Bob! I was sure to find you here. Well, well, well! Twenty years is a long time. Come on, Bob. Let's go somewhere else and have a long talk."
The two men started walking along the street, arm in arm. At the corner there stood a shop with bright lights. When they came near, each turned to look at the other's face.
Bob stopped suddenly. "You're not Jimmy Wells," he said. "Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change a man's nose."
"It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one," said the tall man.
"You've been under arrest (逮捕) for ten minutes, Bob. Now before we go on to the police station, here's a note for you. You may read it here at the window."
Bob opened the little piece of paper. His hands began to shake as he read.
"Bob, I was at the place on time. When you lit your cigar, I saw it was the face of the man wanted by Chicago police. Somehow I couldn't do it myself, so I went around and got another policeman to do the job." —Jimmy
