How did your grandparents go to work when they were young? By bike, I'm sure. In the 1960s and 1970s, 1 there were many bikes running on the street , we call China " the kingdom of bicycle ". I think 2 all those bikes, "EaBa" bikes were the most popular ones. But now most bicycles disappear,3 " ErBa " bikes. People4 to use these heavy vehicles, though bikes don't cause pollution. The cars and the shared -bikes are on the stage of Chinese people's life. They are more5 and faster.
To our surprise ,"ErBa " bikes become very popular in the countryside of South China. People living there grow bananas but they have6 carrying bananas down the hills. People don't have so much money to buy trucks (卡车), and the roads are in bad7 . Then they find " ErBa " bikes have a lot of8 , for example, the bikes don' t need energy, these bikes can carry about 150 kg bananas and it's easy to ride on their rough(不平整的) roads. Their prices are9 .This kind of bike costs only a little money. With " ErBa " bikes, people can feed their families. But it's dangerous for young people to rush down the hills on their bikes. Why don't they 10 to keep safe ? Wearing helmets, I think, is also necessary.
Hello! I am Emma. I love to volunteer (志愿者服务). I started volunteering when I was eight years old. At that time, my grandmother was helping at a community canteen (食堂), and I often went there with her. I tried to help but usually spent my time talking with the old people there because I was too young to do much.
As I grow older, I volunteer at different organizations ( 组 织). Last year, I did two voluntary jobs (工作). The first one was at a food bank. I spent weekends packing bags there. Another one was at an animal hospital. I took care of animals with other volunteers.
Volunteering is great. When volunteering, I am not just making a difference in the lives of others, but also improving my own. I make new friends and learn something new. I love volunteering.
Mr. and Mrs. White are not very rich, so they always spend their holidays in a small hotel at the foot of the mountains near their hometown. They can go climbing and enjoy the fresh air, and they are always very happy. One year, Mr. White got a lot of money in his business. They were so excited that they decided to go to a foreign country and stayed in a really good hotel.
They flew to London and booked a 5-star hotel. They arrived there late in the evening. They thought they would have to go to bed hungrily, because it didn't serve meals in the former(以前的)hotel after seven in the evening. So they were surprised to know that this hotel served dinner until ten.
"Then what are the times of meals?"asked Mrs.White.
"Well, madam, we serve breakfast from seven to eleven. Lunch from twelve to three, tea from four to five, and dinner from six to ten."
"But that hardly leaves any time for us to see the city!" said Mrs. White.
Nobody likes a bully(恶霸). But bullying(霸凌)is a big problem around the world. According to the US National Bullying Prevention Center, one fifth students in the US have been bullied .
Nathan Fellars is an eighth grade student at Centennial Middle School in Utah, US. When he saw classmates being bullied, he knew he had to do something." People often deal with bullying after the bullying has happened. I wanted to see if there was a way to reduce(减少) bullying before it happens at all ," Fellars told the Society for Science .
After studying more about the causes(起因)of bullying , he had an idea to make the app Bully Block. On the app , students can share their lives, whether good or bad. Others can then post responses(回复) . But before the responses are posted, an AI program reads all of them. Only positive (积极的) words will be shown. Fellars believes that this will naturally stop bullying both online and in schools.
"I would love to see my app be used by teachers and students," said Fellars. "I love knowing that it can help somebody else in the world." Do you think Fellars' dream can come true? Do you want to be a person like Fellars?
If you want to be a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading? Some people read very quickly and others read very slowly. But which one is better? The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down to read instructions(说明书) carefully. The slow reader may be a good reader. But he may spend too much time reading a story for fun. So the reader who reads everything quickly or the one who reads everything slowly isn't really a good reader. Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading can help you to know whether(是否)you need to read quickly or slowly. Some things should be read slowly. You must read these things slowly all the time to understand and remember everything important. Examples(例子)are instructions for making or doing something. Also, math books, science and even some storybooks are full of important information. However, some things should be read quickly. Examples are picture-books for enjoyment, letters from friends , and some quick news from newspapers.
In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast. You will need to read some pages quickly and then slow down and do more carefully reading when you come to important ideas. So, knowing when to change your reading speed is one important symbol of being a good reader.
"How are you? " is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But when a person say "How are you ? ", he hopes to hear the answer "Fine," though the person's friend isn't fine. They are common ways of saying"Hello"and "Hi".
Sometimes people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks, "Do you agree?" the other person may be thinking, "No, I don't agree. I think you are wrong."It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.
For example, when a person wants to finish talking with other people on the phone,he may say "I have to go now." Sometimes he often gives an excuse." Someone is at the door", "Something is burning" and so on..It's a polite way to stop a conversation and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings. And it's a part of the game of language.
A.People don't always say exactly what they are thinking.
B.It's interesting when people want to finish talking.
C.I don't think so .
D.But it doesn't sound very polite,so they may say,"I' m not so sure."
E.The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "fine" isn't really an answer.
F.The excuse may be real or it may not.
G.People often greet with"How are you ?"
