Severn Suzuki is the daughter of the famous environmental scientist David Suzuki. But the Canadian woman has become an environmentalist herself.

In 1992, the first U.N. Earth Summit(地球峰会) was held in Rio de Janeiro. Thousands of delegates(代表) from around the world gathered to talk about the Earth future. Twelve-year-old Severn Suzuki and three of her friends formed a group. They raised money to travel from Canada to Rio to attend the summit.

At the summit, Suzuki talked about her fears over the state of the Earth's environment. "You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer(臭氧层). You don't know how to bring back an extinct(灭绝的) animal. You don't know how to bring back forests that once grew in places that are now deserts. If you don't know how to fix the Earth, please stop breaking it!" The six-minute speech silenced everyone present.

After the speech, Suzuki began to lead "two lives". On schooldays, she was a common student. But during her vacations, she spoke internationally about the environment.

Now, 30 years have passed since Suzuki gave her Rio speech. Sadly, many of the world's environmental problems have only become worse. But Suzuki admits(承认) that some things are different now. For example, more and more people have become aware of the importance of environmental protection.

Suzuki, now a mother of two, has continued raising people's awareness of climate change. "Thirty years ago, I was fighting for my own future. Now, I am fighting for the future of my sons," she says. "My viewpoint may have changed, but my message remains the same."

Love them or hate them, emojis have become an important part of our 21st-century culture. Over 90 percent of the world's 4.6 billion internet users send them. In 2015, Oxford Dictionaries chose Face With Tears of Joy () as its Word of the Year. Two years later, Hollywood tried to follow the fad(短暂的狂热) with The Emoji Movie, though the reviews for the film were poor.

However, some language experts are against this form of communication. They consider it a step back into the dark ages of illiteracy(没文化). Emojis, they say, are making us dumb____communicators. People are depending on these "picture characters", rather than words, to express their feelings.

I want to challenge this point of view. I'm afraid these experts have misunderstood how communication works.

Emojis aren't replacing language. Instead, they are making our message more understandable by filling in the emotional signals(感情符号). Here is an example. Without an emoji, what I mean by the following message would be puzzling: "Hey, I fell down and banged(磕) my head on the kitchen wall." My addressee(收信人) might have difficulty working out my true feelings. Should he laugh ("Ha-ha! You're-so-silly!") or take pity on me ("Oh, hope it doesn't hurt too badly.")? The addition of an emoji (or) will spell out the meaning behind my words. Emojis are to text messages what body language is to spoken communication. They allow us to communicate more effectively.

So we probably don't have to worry about this fad as long as we don't overuse emojis. These lovely characters, on the whole, are helpful.

Some people think only schoolchildren today do not agree with their parents.  Communication can be a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some suggestions for you to bridge the generation gap.

●Don't argue with your parents.

Don't confront(和......对峙) your parents with anger. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. Neither can you express yourself well if you are angry. Go somewhere to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy.  If you don't think you can speak to them at that moment, try writing it down.

●Try to reach a compromise(和解).

Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can still disagree but try your best to find a solution that's favorable(有利的) to each of you. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a car. They argued over it, but finally, they came to a compromise. Michael bought the car, but he only drove it on certain days.

Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something.  Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.

●Talk about your values.

The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. 

A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try.

When I was in the fifth grade, I was picked to be the leading role in a school play.

For weeks, my mother helped me practice my lines. But during a rehearsal(排练), every word 1 from my head. So my teacher changed my role to be the narrator(解说). Though I didn't tell my mother what had happened that day, she noticed my 2 and asked if I wanted to take a walk in the yard.

It was a 3 spring day. Everything looked pleasant. We could see dandelions(蒲公英) coming out through the grass. I watched my mother bend down by one of them, "I think I'll 4 all these weeds(杂草)," she said "From now on, we'll only have roses in this garden."

"But I 5 dandelions," I said immediately. "All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions!"

My mother looked at me seriously. "Yes. Every flower 6 in its own way, doesn't it?" She asked thoughtfully. I nodded. "And that is true of 7 , too," she added. 

When I realized that she had sensed my pain, I started to cry and told her the truth. "You will be a 8 narrator," she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud.

Thanks to my mother's 9 , I got to know that everybody had his or her own 10 in the world. I felt proud of my new role in the play.

A model of Legoland Shanghai Resort(上海乐高园度假区模型) made its first appearance in November 2022. Forty designers and model builders spent half a year  (work) on it. They  (use) about 100,000 Lego blocks. The model marked the start of the next stage of the construction(建设) of Legoland Shanghai Resort.

The resort covers  area of more than 318,000 square meters in Jinshan District.  will be made up of a theme(主题) park and a themed hotel. In the theme park, visitors will find most of the popular rides(游乐设施) of Legoland parks around the world.

The park will include eight  (area). One of  (they) is Monkie Kid, which became a new Logo theme in 2020. It's based on the Monkey King. The one in Shanghai is the first Monkie Kid area in the world. It  (design) to connect Chinese children with their traditional culture in 2019. Also, it will be popular  the children from other countries.

The construction of Legoland Shanghai Resort began in November 2021. Everything is now going  (good) with the project. The resort will be open to the public in 2024. There will be a lot of fun for many families with kids  it is expected to become a new tourist attraction(旅游景点).

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl, my parents were very busy. And we didn't have the Internet at home. In order to kill time, I found a pen and some paper, and I just started drawing.

At that time, I thought of drawing as just a hobby. But I was tired of studying for school exams. I wanted to do something creative. One day, it hit me: How nice would it be if I was able to do what I loved for a living? I did research on the best art schools around the world. One of my friends was studying art in the US. She advised me to go to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). That was the only school I applied to(申请) when I had graduated from high school.

Luckily, I was accepted into the RISD. There were new skills to learn every day. At first, I was a little confused(困惑的). I tried many different things. Chris Baselli, one of my teachers, helped me to discover my own style.

I've been working as a full-time illustrator(插画师) for the past ten years. I've drawn for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. I've also worked with companies like McDonald's and Apple. Some clients(客户) keep coming back. They love my style.

Whenever I get a new assignment(任务), I read it over a lot of times. I do this to work out what the most important message is that I should be communicating through my work on the project. Then, I forget about the assignment for a while — the best idea often turns up when I am not thinking too hard about things.

I hope I will never lose my excitement and continue to create wonderful things.
