When I was eleven years old, my life changed when I got a serious disease. My life was 1 with operations and treatments. I felt stressed because I was really uncertain about everything that was happening.
One day, I was receiving my thirteenth operation in the hospital. Being away from my friends and school was causing me almost as much 2 as the operation itself.
During that hospital stay, I received a card from a volunteer. That simple act meant much to me and gave me hope again during my time of need. I'll never 3 the way I felt after that small act of kindness. I started creating an organization called Cards for Hospitalized (住院的) kids.
The charity began with a simple dream of giving hope, joy and magic to those kids. It later 4 a national organization that sent cards to over 5000 sick kids at more than 50 hospitals across the country.
It is hard to believe that an act as simple as a card can do so much good, but it does. Seeing a picture of a child holding one of our cards with a huge smile makes us keep this wonderful charity alive.
5 might provide medicine for these sick kids, but we provide that little bit of hope and magic that'll go a long way.
Some people have no interest in sports. They think that sports make them 1 and smell bad. They say, "Why waste time playing sports?" To these people, I politely say, "You have not discovered the 2 of sports!"
Let me share with you a basketball game I played two weeks ago. Our parents and friends were there to 3 us. A lot of people were watching. We all wanted to 4 the game in front of so many people.
The game was 5 over and we were one point behind. Our coach called us together and said, "Okay, this is it! Either we score now or the game is over. Let's work hard to score. Even if we don't score, 6 we know that we have tried our best. So, boys, don't think too much. It doesn't matter if we lose. Just do it."
Well, in the last 7 of the game, we truly scored and two teams tied (打成平局)! We went into overtime (加时) and we lost in the end. But after the game, the coach hugged all of us. He told us that he was 8 because he had never seen a team try harder than us.
To be honest, I 9 a lot of pleasure in playing sports. It makes me happy and comfortable. That's why I play sports whenever I get the chance. So my 10 is to choose a sport and keep doing it. Your body will thank you and your mind will be ready to work well.
How can I help you?
Dr. Know will try her best to help with all your problems.
Dear Doctor, I am a sixteen-year-old student and I've been experiencing lots of back pain and headaches lately. I'm unsure about the cause. Like some of my friends, I spend my evenings playing computer games and surfing the internet. What's more, I carry a heavy schoolbag to school daily. I'm just an ordinary student, but these health problems are starting to worry me. What can I do? Adam |
Dear Adam, I'm unable to tell you exactly what's wrong, but I can offer some advice. First of all, don't spend too much time on your computer, and stop using it late at night. It's important for teenagers to get enough sleep. Also, you get headaches from looking at computer screens for a long time. If you sit on a chair for long, it can make your back sore too. As for your schoolbag, it's important to manage its weight. Take anything you don't need out of your schoolbag. If possible, leave some books or materials at school. I hope my advice is helpful. Anyway, I strongly recommend(推荐)you visit a local doctor for that. Dr. Know |
A young man with excellent grades wanted to get a job in a big company. He met the manager for the interview. The manager asked, "Who paid for your education?"
"My parents,"the young man replied.
"Where do they work?"
"They work as clothes cleaners."
Then, the manager asked the young man to show his hands. He found the young man's hands were so smooth, and asked, "Have you ever helped your parents wash the clothes?"
"Never."
"Now go home and clean your parents' hands, then see me tomorrow morning."
The young man felt upset. When he got home, he asked his parents to let him clean their hands. They felt strange but happy. While the young man was cleaning their hands, he found his parents' hands were so wrinkled (起皱的), and there were so many bruises (瘀伤) in their hands. His tears fell. After cleaning his parents' hands, he quietly washed all the rest of clothes.
The next morning, he went to the manager's office. The manager asked him, "Can you tell me what you did and learned yesterday in your house?" He told the manager all he did with tears in his eyes and added, "Now I know what appreciation (感激) is. Without my parents, I would not be who I am today...By helping my parents, I realize how much they're done for me. And I also realize the importance and value of helping one's family."
The manager smiled and said, "This is what I'm looking for."
There are millions of teenagers using social media every day. Although some people think social media is a positive thing, many are worried about the negative influences it can have on young people.
Many teenagers agree that social media helps them stay connected to their friends and make new friends from around the world. More and more teenagers are willing to share their life and thoughts online. Thanks to advances in technology, how teenagers make friends and communicate with each other has changed greatly.
However, social media also has many disadvantages, one of which is that some parents believe social media makes it harder for families to spend time together. They say that things on the Net seem super appealing, and that their kids can't take their eyes off the screen. As a result, teenagers pay no attention to the rest of their family.
Another serious problem is that social media makes bullies (霸凌者) easier to reach their goals. A great many people have experienced cyberbullying—bullying that takes place online. So how can teenagers protect themselves if the cyberbullying has taken place? Gwen Taylor, an expert from a charity, which works to end online bullying, suggests, "The first thing to do is to tell a trusted adult about what is going on. " "If someone posts content that frightens you, you can report it to the social media platform. You'd better keep the screenshot (屏幕截图) of the behavior because this will help you to report it and help others to help you," says Taylor.
Perhaps the more effective way is to try to be a good digital citizen. How you act online is just as important as how others treat you. Good digital citizens use online spaces positively, which means treating everybody online with kindness and respect. Respect other people's feelings and don't be mean (刻薄的). "If you have shared something you shouldn't have, it's never too late to say sorry and fix the situation—such as taking the post down. If you notice somebody is being cyberbullied, consider reporting it and getting in touch with the person being treated badly to make sure he is OK," Taylor advises.
