There are 24 solar terms (节气) in China. They are important in guiding our everyday life.
Lixia means the coming of summer, but the real hot time comes from Xiaoshu. Xiaoshu, the 11th solar term before Dashu, starts this year on July 6th and finishes after 15 days. The weather gets hot but not very hot in Xiaoshu. The following are some things you must know about Xiaoshu.
Chinese people in old times enjoyed playing the game of Go (围棋) indoors to spend these hot summer months. Outdoor activities like fishing and keeping fireflies were popular for children in ancient China. There was a student in Jin Dynasty (朝代). He was so poor that he couldn't buy any oil lamps (油灯), so he had the idea to store fireflies in a bag for his nighttime study. People also used jasmine flowers (茉莉) to make their rooms smell (闻) good.
To cool down the body, people usually drink green bean (绿豆) soup or lotus roots (莲藕) soup. The eel (黄鳝) is a must-have food too. Eating eels around Xiaoshu is helpful to the health.
Are you ready to welcome Xiaoshu?

It was a dark and stormy night. It was New Year's Eve. We were having our party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate (庆祝).
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions (爆炸声) from the hills. Looking outside, we saw sparks (火花) flying from electrical transformers (变压器). Then the electricity (电) went off in our house. It was so dark. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity?
The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We boys and men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. The girls and women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn't watch the ball drop in Times Square (时代广场) on television but that wouldn't stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and with the help of someone's watch to tell us the time, we counted down (倒计时) and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year to celebrate the arrival of new year. We didn't need electricity for that!
Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don't think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year's Eve.
① We sat around the dining room table and sang up.
② We saw sparks flying from electrical transformers.
③ We counted down and screamed Happy New Year.
④ We cooked dinner outside on the barbecue happily.
Have you been to pet-themed (宠物主题) restaurants? Now in China, they are getting more and more popular because a lot of people love keeping pets. So actually these restaurants are famous for their pets rather than (而不是) food. There are not so many kinds of food in these pet-themed restaurants, but people can play with cats, dogs, ducks, rabbits or other animals while eating or having drinks. Many pet lovers would like to go to such restaurants to enjoy their weekends. However, is it safe to enjoy food in such an environment?
In fact, there are many problems of the pet-themed restaurants. Animal hairs are everywhere, and there's often bad smell in the restaurants. In one of the dog-themed restaurants, the dogs fight, jump onto the dining table or even poop in the dining area. Some people thought the animals in the pet-themed restaurants might carry parasites (寄生虫) and spread diseases (传播疾病), which were bad for people. Besides, although the animals are kept by the restaurants as pets, they may attack (袭击) people.
As more pets are entering Chinese families, they have become an important part of people's daily lives. The growing pet-themed restaurants have made people's lives interesting and colorful. However, without rules and regulations, the restaurants can't be good choices for people.
