I didn't know of Santa Claus (圣诞老人) until the second grade when my family moved to America. My classmates told me that a fat man would come and put toys in one's stocking (长筒袜) on Christmas Eve.
Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. I took out my longest, cleanest stocking and put it on my bed. However, when I woke up early on Christmas Day and checked the stocking, there was nothing in it——There was no Santa in the world!
From then on, I told my friends the story every December. I had to tell it in a funny way, or I would cry.
How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, a man knocked on my door. He said, "I've been looking for you for twenty-five years." He gave me a red stocking filled with candy and toys, and left. On top of the stocking was a card. It read: "For Becky—I have missed you since the second grade, but you've always lived in my heart. Santa." Then I recognized (认出) Jill's handwriting. I met her just two months ago. I later discovered that the man was her father. Jill had seen the sadness in my eyes and decided to do something with her father.
Now I believe that Santa is real. Santa lives inside kind people. He listens to friends and brings warmth and hope.
①Do you want to travel around the world? Lexie Alford, from California, America, finished traveling to every country in the world at the age of 21.
②Lexie Alford comes from a traveling family. Her mother began her own travel business at a young age, and always took Lexie with her on all of her travels. By the time she was only 18 years old, Lexie had already visited 70 countries. That made her want to visit the rest of the world. In October 2017. Lexie began a trip to visit all 195 countries in the world. Two years later, she finished it.
③Lexie used planes, boats and trains to get around. But she liked to travel by train most. "Traveling on trains is slow travel. I can watch the changing views(景色)from the window," she said.
④For Lexie, there's nothing better than traveling. Even in the hard times, she never thought of giving up. "I'm lucky I made it at last. I felt tired, but it was still an exciting trip. I experienced nothing but love and kindness from the people I met in each and every country," she said. "And I learned a lot about the world. The world would be so boring if everything was the same everywhere. The differences make discovering new cultures such a beautiful experience."
⑤Lexie hopes others, especially women and young people, can go out and see the world. Her biggest goal is to encourage others to push their limits(极限), no matter how big or small they may be. We live in such a big and beautiful world. Why not spend some time traveling just like Lexie?
It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a hurt brain(大脑). Without enough blood(血), the brain lives only three to five minutes. It is dangerous to work on the brain.
Dr. Robert J. White, a famous doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should try to make the brain very cold. If so, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctors a longer time to do something for the brain.
Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys by a test. First he taught them to do different jobs. Then the operation(手术) began. He used a machine to cool the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys' brains. When the brain temperature was 50 degrees (=10℃), Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back. He warmed the blood again. After their operations, the monkeys were like they were before. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.
Dr. White's idea works well on the monkeys. He thinks doctors will use his idea on human beings(人类). A person doesn't have to die when his heart stops. Doctors can start it again. But the problem comes when the brain is without blood for three to five minutes. Maybe in the future, doctors will try Dr. White's idea. When the person's heart stops, the doctors will quickly try to cool the brain. They will have 30 minutes to start the heart again. Maybe there will be no problem with the brain.
a. To stop the blood to the brain.
b. To use a machine to cool the blood.
c. To turned the blood back and warm it.
d. To send the cool blood back to the monkeys' brains.
The famous Russian writer Lea Tolstoy(托尔斯泰) once said, "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."
We always plan or dream to do something great so that we can change the world. For example, we hate pollution, so we try to find new energy sources(能源) to keep the environment clean. Also, we are not satisfied with the traffic, so we plan to build more highways to stop it, but in fact, the main reason for it is that many people don't follow the traffic rules.
Now, lots of students always think their exams are very difficult. In their eyes, the problems on papers are too difficult. But actually, the real reason is that they don't study hard. They never think about changing their attitudes(态度) to study or working hard on their lessons.
In my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we should change ourselves first. but we can easily give up our bad habits, such as littering, breaking traffic rules and always complaining(抱怨) about how difficult the exam is. If we can do that, we'll be strong enough to change the world some day and make it!
A. He was right. B. They are right. C. And they find it hard to pass exams. D. However, we still litter on the ground in our lives. E. As common people, it is not easy for us to change the world |
I was hurrying to our basketball game one morning. Hillary Barnes, the most popular girl in the school, stopped me. "Are you the twin(双胞胎之一) who won the art competition?" she asked. "No, that's Christine. I'm Katie," I said.
My twin sister Christine and I were not the same. In fact, Christine was quite excellent. I couldn't do so well as1 . Compared to Christine, I felt like one of Cinderella's ugly sisters. One Saturday Christine gave me a painting lesson because I was expecting to be an artist, too.2 I knocked over the bottle of paint. Instead of becoming angry. she turned the whole 3 into a dreamy masterpiece(杰作)and won First Prize in the art competition.
I wanted to be excellent, too. Joining Christine's basketball team was my latest 4 to be like her. On the way to the gym, I made up my mind to do best in that day's game. As soon as I arrived at the gym, I couldn't wait to 5 . "Christine, here!" I threw her a ball. It was too high and she missed it. The ball fell onto the recorder(录音机) and broke it. It was used to play the national anthem(国歌)before each game.
How bad! Coach looked at the mess and asked, "6 are we going to play the song now?" Christine suggested, "Let Katie sing it! She's always singing at home and she's got a nice 7 ."
Coach asked, "Would you?" "Yes, I would." I said. I looked up to the flag and began to sing. My voice was so 8 that everyone could hear me. When I finished, the gym was silent. Then it was filled with cheers. As the game started, my teammate said to me, "You should try out for the school musical!" I 9 and said that I might.
The next morning, Hillary Barnes stopped me in the hallway and asked, "Are you the twin who 10 the national anthem?"
"Yes, that's me." I would never think that I was not as perfect as Christine. Well, just be myself?
What comes to your mind when you think of kung fu? Maybe Shaolin monks(和尚)with a serious look in (them) eyes. But is it the real meaning of kung fu?
Laurence J. Brahm, a filmmaker from the United States. tried (answer) this question in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm traveled to (city) in China and the US in search of the value of kung fu.
a kung fu lover, Brahm himself has been practicing the art (careful) for more than 40 years. For him, it is more than a pastime(消). Ages ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for two years had to walk with a cane(拐杖). But by practicing kung fu, he was able to recover(恢复) step by step. Since 2019, kung fu (become) a daily activity for him and also the way he begins the day.
Still, there are other deep meanings in the practice. Nonviolence(非暴力) is one value, which is shown both in the name and practice of kung fu. The Chinese character Wu has two (part)—"戈", meaning "to fight", and "止", meaning "to stop". So, meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. the art of nonviolence. Kung fu artists always greet people with baoquan. This lets each person know that there are no hidden weapons(武器)and shows trust.
"The (tradition)values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people," Brahm told Xinhua.
My name is Lucy. Art has always been my favorite subject, as it allows me to do my favorite hobby. I still remember when I was young, I would always paint on books, pieces of paper, and walls.
But now in school, there are only four art lessons each week, which is far from enough for me. I notice that the 40 minutes for each lesson seem to pass by in a flash(闪现) because I get completely lost in my artwork. It is as if drawing takes me to another world, where time stands still and creativity(创造力)never stops.
I love drawing so much that whenever I have time between classes, I find myself drawing something. I have spent so much time improving my skills that even my classmates are often amazed by my talent (天赋).
I especially enjoy drawing cartoons. This is the area where my creativity is always free. Letting my creativity run wild, I sometimes draw things that surprise even myself. I have cartoons of all the teachers I know. While some are pretty, others should not be shown to the teachers because they will be sad. They are only for my classmates and me to see.
So, I must say that I always feel good when I am drawing something. For me, drawing is a natural way to express myself. It simply allows me to follow my instincts (直觉) and lets my feelings guide my hand. And the result is always a happy one, leaving me with a sense of achievement that no other subject can match.
