It was March 2018. I was 1 high school. While I was looking forward to my college years, I also really wanted to2 abroad. After thinking about it for a few days, I decided to have gap year (间隔年).

I spent much time trying to3 the program I was most interested in. I contacted (联系) many volunteer organizations.4 , I chose "African Impact.". I wanted to make a difference to Africa and its people though it might be very5 . I took part in the Child Care Project. We worked in a foster care home (孤儿院) in Cape Town and 6 time with a group of orphans (孤儿) between the ages of 1 and 3. There was nothing as exciting as seeing a baby 7 her first steps, hearing a two-year-old girl repeat (重复) all of the letters after I said them, seeing a little boy kick or catch balls of different sizes, and watching all of the kids wash their hands 8 . These were the9 that I watched the children develop during my time there.So I got such a strong feeling of 10 .

I also took part in the Teaching Project and worked in a preschool. Teaching was11 because some children were naughty (顽皮的) and didn't always listen to me. 12 it's hard to describe the joy I felt when the kids finally understood what I was trying to teach 13 .

Volunteering in Cape Town 14 my life. I would not be who I am today if it wasn't for this program. I cannot be more thankful for this15 experience.

Children's games in ancient China

During ancient times,children didn't have smart phone,iPad or computer to entertain them. 

Instead, they came up with interesting games to play in their childhood. Let's take a look.

China's 15-year-old Chen Ye won the gold medal in the men's bowl final of skateboarding (滑板男子碗池决赛) at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sept. 25. 2023.

Chen started getting into this sport at the age of 8. "I remember one day I went to a sports store, and by chance I saw a skateboard. I decided to give it a try." Chen told China Daily. Although it was really challenging to stay on the board at first, Chen found it very interesting, compared with other hobbies. "Every time I learned some difficult skills, I felt the joy of making breakthroughs (突破), "said Chen. 

Gradually, Chen needed a better skate bowl for training. To meet the need, his father decided to make a skate bowl himself. "He gave up his job and worked on the bowl late into the night, "said Chen. "I'm really thankful for my father's support."

As a junior high school student, Chen needed to find a balance(平衡)between his schoolwork and skateboarding. His only "privilege (特权)" was being free from P. E. classes, during which he would do schoolwork because he needed to practice in his own skate bowl for hours after returning home. He trained in the morning, studied in the afternoon and sometimes had to have extra classes with the teachers' help. While getting ready for the competition this year, he trained for more hours at night to avoid interfering (干扰) with daytime classes. 

Looking at seven years of learning skating, Chen said this experience made him stronger and more determined to do something he truly loves.

When you think of the sea, you may not think of Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia. But recently, the "seafood" produced in these places has become popular, especially after Japan put nuclear-contaminated water (核污染水) into the sea, reported China Daily.

In Nilka county in Xinjiang, about 6, 000 tons of rainbow trout (虹鳟鱼) will be produced（生产） this year. Rainbow trout belongs to the same family as salmon (鲑鱼), which is a kind of well-known seafood. It tastes like salmon too.

Why do farmers there choose to grow fish? The weather in some parts of Xinjiang is seldom hot, and the rivers are fed by meltwater (融水) from the Tianshan Mountains. Water deeper than 6 meters always stays at 10℃. As the meltwater is very clean and cold, it's a "comfortable" home for fish, Li Chunyu, a worker at a fish company in Xinjiang, told China Daily.

To make sure the river stays clean, the company uses machines to clean fish waste in the water. They also use net cages(鱼笼) that are good for the environment. The nets are about 51 meters wide and lie 25 meters deep in the river.

Meanwhile, in Inner Mongolia, whiteleg shrimp (南美白对虾) grows well. Saline soil (盐碱土) covers a large part of the desert where few plants are able to grow. Farmers used to put water from the Yellow River onto the farmland to wash away the salt. This was a waste of salty water.

Scientists then decided to create "seawater" with the salty water by adding in some other components (成分). Whiteleg shrimps can live well in this kind of water. They taste no different from the same kind of shrimp that grows in the sea.

Although it's enjoyable to use, many people refuse to download it.  "I dislike the poorly-made videos with boring ads, even unhealthy dirty jokes."one man said online. Many people spend too much time watching videos every day. For this reason, Douyin should make strict rules and create a better environment for its users.

Imagine you meet someone new at school. They might look different from you in hair, clothes or looks. It's important not to make any judgments about them just because of how they look. 

Sometimes, people make a mistake by judging others by their looks. They might think someone is mean(吝啬的) or unfriendly just because they have a serious face or wear unusual clothes. But sometimes seeing is not believing!

In reality, people are like books with a great many pages. In order to understand them, we need to "read many pages". That means talking with them, learning about their interests and ideas, and spending time with them. Think about your best friends. When you met them for the first time, you might not know they would be your friends. But as you spent time together, you realized how amazing they were. 

Don't judge people by their looks, and open our heart to the people around us. If we do so， we'll start to understand and treasure the differences between us, like different cultures, different backgrounds, and different ways of thinking. 

So, let's keep an open mind and be nice to everyone we meet, no matter how they look. When we do so,we make a big difference to the world, and we make a world where everyone feels important and accepted. After all, the most amazing things are hidden. They are in each one of us!
