When I was a little boy, I was interested in comic books and storybooks. When I was a middle school student, I began to read novels, plays, essays (散文) and so on. I found I could get much from them. Little by little, I took a great interest in literature (文学) and last term I won the first prize in the composition contest (作文竞赛) among high school students in our city.
Reading "The Emperor's New Clothes" makes me laugh a lot about the emperor's silly behavior. "The Little Match Girl" makes me feel sad. Robinson Crusoe takes me into a strange world full of danger. And I am also deeply moved by Helen Keller's spirit of being strong and never giving up. Besides these, books also tell me other things—how to be a brave man and how to tell the difference between right and wrong. In a word, good books can let me know what I don't know before. So I think good books are just like my best friends.
Running is becoming popular these days. Many of us run for health. Doctors say many health problems come from these bad habits: eating and drinking too much, smoking and not taking enough exercise. Doctors tell us, "Eat and drink less. Don't smoke, and exercise more."
Running is a good form of exercise because it helps build a strong heart. It also helps most people lose weight. One 68-year-old woman runs three times a week. "I love to eat," she says. She runs to lose weight.
Running is good for health in other ways, too. Many runners say running keeps colds and other small health problems away. "Running is my doctor," says one man.
Running can also help people to relax. So today men and women of all ages enjoy running.
It was half past five in the afternoon when Sarah came home from work. She walked into the living room and looked at her three children.
The children were fourteen, thirteen and nine years old. They were happily watching TV. The room was dirty and untidy (凌乱的). There were empty glasses and dirty clothes on the floor. Toys were everywhere.
Sarah got angry. "What a mess!" she said to her children. "I work all day and have to do housework all the evening. I'm very tired. I need to have a good rest. I won't do housework anymore!"
Sarah did as she said. She didn't do any housework. Every evening she sat on the sofa and watched TV. A week later, every dish in the kitchen was dirty. All the children's clothes were dirty, too. Every trash can was full. The whole house was out of order.
Then one day when Sarah got home, she got very surprised. The kitchen was clean. The children had cleaned it!
The second day, when Sarah got home, she found the living room was clean, and the children were washing their clothes. Sarah was happy and went to help them.
Now Sarah and her three children do housework together. Then they all sit on the sofa and watch TV.
My home town is Wuyuan, a county in the northeast of Jiangxi Province. It is more than 1,000 years old. And there are more and more tourists visiting it these years.
In these villages, there are many old buildings with black tiles (瓦片) and white walls. Every year, many students come here to draw them. Another place people like to visit in my home town is Rainbow Bridge. The bridge is over 800 years old. It is 140 metres long and 3 metres wide.
We usually take a walk in the sea of rape flowers (油菜花) in late March and early April. In summer, it's very cool in the mountains, so we like to go there to have a picnic. Wuyuan is very beautiful in late autumn too. From October to late November is the best time to watch red and yellow leaves in the mountains.
Wuyuan is not big or busy. It only takes us about two hours to arrive in Hangzhou from Wuyuan by bullet train.

Long ago, Jim's father gave him a dog as a gift for his seventh birthday. Jim named the dog Brownie. Soon, Jim and Brownie became very good friends.
There was a river near Jim's house. (A)他常常和朋友们去那里钓鱼。 One day, Jim took Brownie to go fishing. He wanted to show Brownie his fishing. After waiting for a short time, he felt something from under the water. Believing it must be a very big fish, Jim got very excited. He tried his best to pull (拉) the fish up out of the water, but it wouldn't move. Because of the strong pull, Jim lost his balance (失去平衡) and fell into the water. Sadly, he didn't know how to swim. He cried but soon went down.
As Jim woke up again, he felt the warmth on his face. Brownie was licking (舔) his face non-stop. He was trying to wake him up. Then Jim found himself on the river bank. On his shirt, there were some big holes. Seeing that, Jim smiled and hugged (拥抱) Brownie at once. (B)How happy he was!
