"I am not crazy," says Dr. William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a rabbit. "I am ahead of my time." If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he'll have the last laugh. He's one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing "holistic" medicine—combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale's dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber's treatments eased her dog's suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, "moves more easily and rides more comfortably" after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. "Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well," he says. "I will do anything to help an animal. That's my job."
Smoking in your own home in Thailand may now be considered a crime, if the smoke is considered harmful to other people in the house.
The new law, Family Protection and Deve-lopment Promotion Act, was initiated (启动) by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and was announced in the Royal Gazette on May 22, 2019. The law aims at limiting smoking at home which might be hazardous for others' health living under the same roof. In that case, it will be considered as "domestic violence". The new law came into force on August 20.
According to the center for research and knowledge management for tobacco control, at the Faculty of Medical Science of Mahidol University, there are about 4. 9 million households where one or more family members smoke. An average of 10. 3 million people have unconsciously become passive smokers because they've been breathing in smoke at home. Scientific studies show that passive smokers are at greater risk of being affected by cancer.
Of 75 child patients from houses where smoking is practiced, 76% of them were found to have nicotine traces in their urine (尿液), with 43% of them having nicotine content going beyond permitted levels. Smoking at home also may lead to physical or emotional violence because of aggressiveness (攻击性) when there is a lack of smoking, and might as well ruin relationships between smokers and non-smoker family members.
According to the new law, anyone who thinks they are affected by domestic smoking can report to officials concerned so that inspectors will be sent to investigate and take legal action against the smokers. Once confirmed, the court may order a person to receive treatment to quit smoking in an attempt to protect the person's family. In February, 2019, Thailand had banned smoking at six of its airports along with a ban in public places.
With the introduction of its new C40 Recharge on Tuesday,Volvo became the latest automaker to bet that consumers who have so far been uninterested to the idea of an EV (electric vehicle) might change their minds if it comes in a form of cars they love:the crossover(跨界车). Whether they do may be vital to the success of California's plan to end sales of gasoline cars by 2035.
Volvo joins Ford of Europe and Jaguar in promoting EVs,promising every car it makes and sells by 2030 will be all-electric. In a webcast to introduce the new vehicle, the company also laid out a new sale strategy—the C40 and all electric Volvo cars will be available for purchase only online. A group of electric crossovers has hit the market in recent months, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E,the Tesla Model-Y and the Volkswagen ID. 4.
Whether customers flock (群集) to crossover EVs will signal to regulators how much or how little work they need to do to meet the plans such as California's. Despite the state's aggressive plan, sales of all-electric vehicles remain less than 2% of the US total.
"The manufacturers are taking a calculated risk here,"said Matt DeLorenzo of auto market research firm Kelley Blue Book. "Crossovers are popular with the mainstream. That's where the volume is. "
Electric cars sold in the US until recently were short-range ones or high-end luxury cars, neither one a high-volume category. In 2020,2. 4 million crossovers were sold in the US. "If you can't sell an electric crossover, then you'll have trouble selling any kind of vehicle," DeLorenzo said.
To sell in large numbers, the vehicles will in the first place need continued government financial support for the next few years at least,Edmunds market analyst Caldwell said. Although battery costs are coming down, they still cost significantly more than gas engines. Although crossovers will serve as an early indicator of customer acceptance, Caldwell said she wouldn't call 2021 a make-or-break year for EV makers.
Anxiety and depression are complex conditions. Everyone can benefit from learning how to care about our mind.
•Self-compassion (自我同情)
This can include feeling like you must be perfect to be accepted. The answer to perfectionism isn't letting it all go—it's self-compassion, which means you are kind and understanding when faced with personal failures—after all, who ever said you were supposed to be perfect? How we treat ourselves through the ups and downs of life can have a huge impact on physical health and mental health.
•Social Connection
From the time we were born, we have been needing social connection in order to grow and succeed. It can be talking to one trusted person about how you're really doing or having a visit with any family member or friend. If this feels out of reach, try making a short list of people who at any point have given you a sense of belonging..
•Exercise
Exercise can be important for preventing depression since having a sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyle is a risk factor. Another study found that 12 weeks of exercise at 30 minutes, three to five times per week reduced symptoms by 47%.
So the best approach is: Get whatever support is in reach and care about your mind based on what works for you.
A.It is important to be kind to yourself.
B.But it doesn't have to be a big party or an office full of people.
C.Being constantly self-critical is risky for anxiety and depression.
D.It may be vital to understand happiness when we struggle with mood.
E.One study found that 15 minutes a day of exercise can significantly prevent depression.
F.The following behaviors are some key ones linked to prevention of anxiety and depression.
G.Studies have shown that just thinking of positive relationships can help you tolerate stress.
Two of the saddest words in the English language are "if only". I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words. The two words 1 regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. And sometimes the words "if only" go with2 disasters. Think about how many times you have heard about something awful happening, 3 by "if only he had called her back to make sure she was okay" or "if only I had examined that noise. . . " or "if only they had made sure the gate to the pool clicked behind them. . . ".
My father-in-law is 4 in our family for saying, "Apply an extra minute to do it right. " He must be doing something 5 , since he's 91 years old and still making sense.
I always 6 to live by the "extra minute" rule. Sometimes it only takes seconds to make sure I write the words down 7 , or check some information on the Internet, or move an object 8 before it trips someone.
And of course when my children were young and likely to cause all kinds of troubles, I lived and breathed the "extra minute"9 . I always thought about what I could do to 10 an "if only" moment, whether it was something simple like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter,or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the 11 corners of a glass coffee table.
I know there will still be 12 when I have to say "if only" about something, but my life is surely more peaceful because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that 13 . And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to 14 a personal connection, I know that I'm doing the right thing. I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of 15 for my emotional well-being.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," and my family started to think about how we could help.
