Yan used to be one of the youngest professors at Tsinghua University. She has won many prizes for her studies at home and abroad. Yan is going to help start the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART). It has several purposes, including scientific research. Set to be finished in 2025,it aims to be a world—famous medical research academy by the middle of this century. Its leader will be chosen around the world.
Yan said she wanted to support more outstanding scholars(学者) and deal with health problems humans are facing. For her,Shenzhen is an energetic place where anything is possible. "Shenzhen is the city of dreams, and I want to realize my next dream here,"Yan said in a speech.
Yan's return can be seen as a symbol of China paying great attention to developing the careers (事业)of talented people. The country gives good opportunities, which have made many overseas students and talents return. According to the Ministry of Education, from 1978 to the end of 2022,4. 32 million Chinese students finished their studies abroad and 84. 46% returned to China for further development.
At the same time,China has taken action to attract global talents. At the beginning of this year, the Ministry of Science and Technology made a policy to encourage companies to offer jobs to high—level foreign experts.
William is British, but he is an expert(专家)on China's Great Wall. He married a Chinese woman and lived in Beijing. His two sons,James and Thomas, are 28 and 21 years old. They have shared their father's interest in the Great Wall since they were children.
In 2016,the brothers made some videos about the Great Wall. Some of them were shown on the BBC and some Chinese websites. Last year, they decided to take it a step further to experience the Great Wall by walking along it.
On July 15 last year, the brothers set out from Jiayu Pass in Gansu Province. They walked about 30 kilometres a day. They sometimes spent the night in hotels. Other times, they camped in the wild.
The two traveled along the main part of the Great Wall from west to east. After 131 days, they finally reached the Shanhai Pass in Hebei Province. Their journey covered more than 3,000 kilometers.
William is very proud of his sons. "The Great Wall is more complicated(复杂的)than we had thought," said the brothers. "This trip has given us a better understanding of it!"
The Silk Road— another wonder in human history
Long ago, trade brought treasures from the East to the West. They were looking for new and amazing goods to sell. Trips to the East became more favorable when traders found silk and spices. These treasures were not the normal goods that were easy to get in the West at that time. Many people wanted them so it became a good way to become rich.
The Silk Road was not a real road. It was a route between the East and West. It went through China,Turkey and Greece. Some traders traveled over land. Others sailed across the sea. There was danger along both routes.
Traders who went over the land used camels and horses. These animals carried heavy loads which made the trips manageable. First, the traders crossed the desert. Then, they climbed over mountains. After that, the traders still had hundreds of miles to go. Bad weather was often a problem. There were desert sandstorms. The mountains had snowstorms. Robbers also caused trouble. They stole the silk and spices.
Traders who crossed the sea faced some of the same problems. There were storms on the sea. Water and winds could push the boats in the wrong direction. Sometimes the ships crashed and the storms took control of the ships. Few traders gave up their trips on the Silk Road, though. They kept getting wealthier.
Many people liked silk. It came from China. Silk was made from the cocoons of silkworms. Workers pulled threads off the cocoons. They wove it into material. The cloth was light and soft and it was comfortable to wear. Some traders tried to take silkworms out of China.
Over time, the Silk Road changed people in both the East and West. Traders shared stories about faraway lands. They brought back drawings of the places and things they had seen. It helped people learn about new customs and beliefs. As a result of the Silk Road, the world seemed much smaller.
Traditionally, tourists like to make use of every second of the day. They rush from one place to another. When they finally get to their hotel rooms at night, they often find it hard to sleep though they are tired. Most city hotels may be in the city centre. But it usually also means noisy traffic and bright streetlights. As a result, many people simply do not sleep well in these hotels.
To solve this problem, many hotels are offering special sleep suites (套间). These suites are made to provide quietness and darkness. Some hotels are even buying smart beds for these suites. They can not only help users relax their bodies but also record their sleep.
In addition, many hotels use other ways to help people sleep better. Some provide a menu of relaxing teas. Others offer services such as massages (按摩) after meals.
Some sleep scientists believe these sleep suites are a result of the pandemic (流行病) in the past three years. In those days, many people had trouble sleeping because of illness and worries. So after the pandemic, hotels have paid more attention to sleep problems.
Sleep suites are a huge step forward for the travel industry. Only when we are well rested while traveling can we feel more relaxed after we return home!
Years ago,I was on a train ride when I noticed a family getting on board. There were two little girls, their mom,and her friend, all of them with big bags. From what it looked like, they were going to be away for several days. One of the girls sat next to an older gentleman, who started talking with her.
As the train ride went on,the little girl said that they were on their way to the children's hospital in the city, where her sister Hayley was receiving treatment. Without asking more about it,the man spoke with the girls on and off during the journey. Towards the end of the ride, the man started writing something on a piece of paper. As the train stopped at his station,he walked over to the girl's mom and handed her a check saying, "That's for Hayley. " Then he got off the train before anyone had a chance to thank him.
The mom was puzzled(迷感不解的)at first. After seeing the check, she felt thankful for what he had done. She looked up,hoping to catch the man before he disappeared from view, but he was already gone.
The moment left a lasting impression on me. It reminded me that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day. It also made me wonder about the man's story and what led him to do this for strangers on a train.
