While writing this book, I once asked an expert how he kept from worrying. He replied, "I have always tried to follow the advice: when you have a lemon, make a lemonade (柠檬汁)."
That is what a wise man does. But the fool does just the opposite. If he finds that life has given him a "lemon", he gives up and says, "I'm beaten. I haven't got a chance." Then he starts to develop a sense of self-pity. But when the wise man is handed a "lemon", he says, "What lesson can I learn from the bad luck? How can I improve my situation? How can I tun this lemon into a lemonade?"
Here is an interesting story of a woman who did just that. Her name is Thelma. "During the war," she told me about her experience, "my husband was sent to an Army training camp near the Mojave Desert. I went there to live with him. But I hated the place. I had never felt so terrible before. My husband was ordered out for training, so I was left alone most of the time. Not a friend to talk to but only the local people who couldn't speak English. The wind never stopped blowing. All the food I ate and the air I breathed were filled with sand, sand, sand! I was so sorry for myself that I wrote to my parents. I said I couldn't stand it one minute longer. My father answered my letter with just two lines - two lines that completely changed my life:
Two men looked out from prison bars (监狱铁窗).
One saw the mud (烂泥),the other saw stars.
I read those two lines over and over. I was ashamed of myself. I made up my mind I would find out what was good in my present situation. I would look for the stars."

New York City in the United States has an unusual way of cleaning up its polluted Hudson River: oysters (牡蛎). It is part of a plan to create a healthier ecosystem in the river by increasing the oyster population. Oysters may help to restore the waters and bring back more sea life. How do oysters do it?
Oysters act as natural "water purifiers". They are filter feeders (滤食动物) . That means they take in water through their gills and filter out the food in it, such as algae (藻类) ,which they then eat. A single adult oyster can filter up to 189 litres of water in a day. As they feed, oysters also filter other harmful things out of the water.
One of these is nitrogen, a chemical found in septic tanks (化粪池) . Sometimes nitrogen gets washed into rivers and oceans when it rains. Too much nitrogen in the water causes much algae to grow. The algae uses up the oxygen in the water, which can harm other sea life. Oysters filter nitrogen out of the water and use it to grow their shells.
Oysters also build reefs (珊瑚礁) ,which are important to the whole ecosystem. Oysters attach (依附) themselves to hard surfaces underwater like rocks. Then more oysters attach themselves on top of those. As the oysters grow, their shells mix together to form a reef. When the new oysters are placed in the Hudson River, they are attached to metal cages in the water. These become the foundations for new reefs, which will get larger as more oysters build on top of them.
Oyster reefs provide homes for plants and animals. Reefs also help to protect the shoreline. Large reefs reduce the effect of waves coming in from the ocean, and help to reduce flooding and protect the coast.
Over the years, the New Yorkers have done a lot for the river, but it will still take tens of years before the new reefs being created in the Hudson River grow as the reefs that were destroyed long ago, but there are already signs that the ecosystem is healthier.
China is the hometown of kites. Making and flying kites is one of the Chinese ancient folk skills. Kites are also an important part of the Chinese culture.
Kites were invented by the Chinese during the Spring and Autumn Period, having a history of over 2, 000 years. It is said that Mozi, an ancient Chinese thinker made a wood bird after the work of three years. This might be the earliest kite in human history.. Some folk custom experts told that ancestors (祖先) invented kites mainly to memorize their family members and friends.. They hope that their sadness could be passed to the dead through the kites. In the Northern and Southern Dynasties, kites began to be used for the purpose of sending messages. Since the Sui-Tang Period, paper has been used to make kites because of the papermaking. In Song Dynasty, flying kites became a favorite outdoor sport of the people
According to researches, kites were spread to Korea in the tenth century and then to Japan.. It was said the time when it was spread to Europe was the thirteenth or fourteenth century.
. The controlling string (绳) and the pulling force are decided by the size and the shape of the kites, the environment and the wind. Right wind often blows in spring, making it the perfect season for flying kites. If we want to play for fun, flying kites should avoid cloudy days, and rainy days. Safety is also important. Flying kites should be done on an open ground and it is not wise to fly kites in dangerous places such as water side and tops of buildings.
A. Flying kites needs skills B. But they weren't spread to Europe at that time C. So on the Qingming Festival people would make and fly kites D. Then Lu Ban made changes to the kite of Mozi by using bamboos E. The British museum called Chinese kites "China's fifth greatest invention " |
We often see Michelle Yeoh on the big screen. However, the famous actress always wants people to see her differently.
Forty years ago, in Hong Kong, actresses could only play young and1 women, who were protected by men — their "heroes." Yeoh wanted something different. She wanted to be "2 " too. She worked hard to learn martial art (武术). She began to play roles (角色) in some action movies. And people started to see her differently.
Yeoh quickly became3 in Asia and soon she got calls from Hollywood. She was 4 . But when she got there, she felt disappointed (失望). As an Asian actress, Yeoh had few5 to appear on the screen.
But Yeoh tried hard to make people see her differently. In 1997, she played a role in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies. People saw a very different "Bond Girl." Instead of6 to be saved, Yeoh's role saved 007's life. She could do the7 thing as the man.
Few believed someone from Asia could8 the Oscar (奥斯卡) for Best Actress. On March 13, however, Yeoh just did it. She made9 for her performance (表演) in Everything Everywhere All at Once. People around the world now see Yeoh differently. And10 her, they see Asian actors and actresses differently.
Dear boys and girls, now you've found out more about Yeoh. Do you see her differently?
Yuan Ke works as a food deliveryman(外卖员) in Changsha, Hunan Province. He is a little different from most other food (deliveryman). When busy lunchtime comes, he doesn't pick up paid orders. Instead, he goes to a community canteen(食堂). He picks up food there and delivers it for free to three old people are living alone.
Yuan has been voluntarily delivering food to the three old people for months. "I know they will be waiting for me," he said. He doesn't just bring them food. More importantly, he keeps them company(陪伴).
"I remember first time I delivered food to Grandpa Hu, he was just sitting there alone. I could feel his (lonely)," Yuan said. "So I decided to talk with him for a while when I bring him food."
Grandpa Hu said he is thankful for Yuan's deliveries and visits. "Every time Yuan comes and tells me that my lunch is here, I ask him to put it on the table. These are the first words that I say every day," Hu said. "I didn't have anyone to talk to and felt lonely. Now, with Yuan (talk) with me every day, I feel much (good)."
Grandma Shen is another old person Yuan visits. She reminds Yuan his grandmother. "Grandma Shen often gives me apples and asks me to ride (slow). It makes me feel warm," Yuan said.
Yuan also brings garbage bags(垃圾袋) with him to help clean up the waste after the old people finish (eat). Yuan has left them his mobile phone number in case(以防) they need help. "It's not safe for old people (live) alone. If they fall, no one will know, I'm delivering them food, and I want to help take care of them as much as I can," he said.
Dr. Lin Qiaozhi graduated from Peking Union Medical College(PUMC) with the WenhaiScholarship, the highest prize given to graduates. After working for a few years, she was sent to study in Europe and then, in 1939, in the US. She had a great influence on her American workmates, who invited her to stay after graduatings However, she refused. She wanted to serve the women and children at home.
Thinking of all the people in need of help, Dr. Lin opened a private clinic(诊所) after going back to China. (A)She asked very little money to treat patients and often cut costs for poor patients. At times she was even seen riding a donkey(驴) to faraway villages to provide medical care.
The new People's Republic of China saw Dr. Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role. In 1954, she was chosen to the first National People's Congress(全国人民代表大会). She was more interested in taking care of patients, doing medical research on care for women and children, and training the other doctors."We care for two lives"she told new staff.60."(B) 作为医生,我们应该对病人负责,把他们当作我们的姐妹来对待。"
Though Lin Qiaozhi never married, she was known as the"mother of ten thousand babies", having helped mothers to give birth to over 50,000 habies in her lifetime. Dr. Lin did not stop working until the day she died, 22 April 1983. Since she had no children of her own, she left her money to a kindergarten(幼儿园) and a fund for new doctors. And even as she was dying, her final thoughts were for-others."I'm ready to go,"she said."Don't try to save me any more. Don't waste the medicine any more."
