Attend the Next Forum!
For the last thirty-two years, CPSB has had the pleasure of hosting a learning event we call a Forum. We started offering programs in Sarasota in February in 1991 and our first forum was held in 1992 as a small group meeting. Being from the Northern USA, this was a particularly good time to go south for the warmth of our friendships with Dr. Treffinger and Dr. Noller and to keep away from the cold winter.
The Forum is the only chance to learn about various topics of the creativity and innovation(革新) and from those who have rich experience and interest in the field. The theme of the2025 Forum includes searching for a few new methods, sharing lessons from experience, and learning and exchanging ideas on cutting-edge research. Space is limited, so early registration is welcome.
VIEW Qualification Course February 4 and 5, 2025 Lido Holiday Inn Sarasota, Florida $650( registration includes lunch and course materials) Interested in becoming qualified to use the VIEW assessment (评估) of Problem Solving Style? The two days before The Forum provide you just that chance. For more information on VIEW, see pages 24-25. |
The Forum February 6 and 7, 2025 Lido Holiday Inn Sarasota, Florida $750( registration includes some meals and materials) Special Offer: If you would like to attend the VIEW qualification course and the Forum, you can register for both events for $1050. |
I felt encouraged by his words and began to swim more calmly. But my clothes stuck to me like a heavy weight. I could hardly stay above the surface.
Counsel saw this. "Shall I cut them?" he asked.
With a knife he cut my clothes from top to bottom and took them off quickly while I swam for both of us.
Then I did the same for Counsel, and we continued to swim near each other.
But we were in serious trouble. The crew might not have noticed our disappearance.
And if they had, they could not return because the rudder (舵) had broken. Counsel thought of all this. and calmly made his plans. We decided to wait for the ship as long as possible, because we had no other hope of safety. I suggested that we save our strength so that both of us would not be tired out at the same time. This was how we did it: While one of us lay on his back, quite still, with arms crossed and legs stretched out , the other would swim and push him along. We exchanged every ten minutes or so. In this way, we could swim for hours, perhaps till daylight. The crash of the ship and the whale had appeared at about eleven o'clock. We had about eight hours to swim before daylight. This seemed possible, if the sea remained calm.
In the hottest months of each year, many powerful storms are born in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen cause the strong, circ ling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that are named hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and most seriously, bring death to large numbers of people.
The great storms that hit the coast start as harmless circling disturbances (大气搅动)hundreds, even thousands, of miles out at sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, wet air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In this course, the wetness in this warm air produces rains, and with it the heat is changed into energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl (旋转) in a counter-clockwise (逆时针) motion.
The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The hidden energy of the heat given off by a hurricane's rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the US for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6-to-12-inch downpour resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea, the mountain s of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves towards shore.
Engineers at the University of Arizona and a scientist at the American space agency NASA have developed a lightweight sailplane that can fly above Mars for several days at a time. The plane is equipped with flight, temperature and gas sensors, as well as cameras. It is designed to gather data about the Red Planet's atmosphere.
There are currently eight active spacecraft orbiting Mars and three rover vehicles also exploring the surface. But these research vehicles are limited in their ability to collect data on the area just above the Mars surface, because they depend on energy from the sun and need batteries to operate.
The researchers say the sailplane they developed is lightweight and low-cost. It will be able to use a method called dynamic soaring. This method permits a plane to gain energy by repeatedly crossing boundaries between air masses of different strength levels. This kind of wind activity is known to be common on Mars.
NASA has experimented with a small helicopter on Mars, the Ingenuity. So far, tests of Ingenuity have been successful. But the experimental helicopter is only able to fly for a few minutes at a time and can only reach heights of about 12 meters. "Its technology has been very limited by energy," says the study's lead author, Adrien Bouskela. Sailplanes, on the other hand, can fly over the Martian skies for days, allowing them to reach far beyond Ingenuity and visit new places.
The team has carried out tests of the sailplane by attaching it to a balloon floating in the sky. More tests are planned for this summer when researchers are expected to send the plane up to about 4500 meters above sea level, where Earth's atmosphere is thinner and flight conditions are similar to those of Mars. "We can use Earth as a laboratory to study flight to Mars," said Sergei Shakrayev, a professor at the University of Arizona.
We've all heard the phrase, "Work smarter, not harder." When it comes to studying, there are some very specific ways you can improve your effectiveness without adding loads of extra work.
Create a game plan. , create a game plan for exactly how you will study. Consider what you will study, how long you'll spend on each subject and what study methods you will use. This allows you to study the right materials at the right time. Take at least 10 minutes before your study session to map out your game plan.
. Taking the time to boil your notes down to a standard outline can help you grasp the overall concepts you're studying. You certainly can borrow or copy someone else's notes, but you must work hard to put everything in your own words. . Many times, understanding the big picture is just as important as remembering all the individual facts. Outlining allows you to file individual facts under larger ideas.
Maintain balance. Balance can be difficult to maintain in school but it's crucial for success. Don't spend all your time studying or all your time hanging with friends. Seek to carry out a balanced life. Make sure to maintain a social life and develop hobbies outside of school. Stay in touch with your family and keep them informed of your school progress. .
There's no way to get around studying. If you want to do well in school, you simply have to do it. But there are specific ways to study better. . To keep from spinning your wheels. By following the methods above, you can raise the quality of your studying sessions without necessarily increasing the quantity.
A. Outline your notes B. Write down your notes C. Before you begin your study session D. To make the most of your limited time E. The first thing you have to do is to create a game plan F. If you don't, you'll fail to understand the larger concept G. It's certainly a challenge, but living in balance will keep you on the path to success |
Miller's black shirt is his favorite. He's had it for eight years, but he never thought it would one day come in handy when saving a life.
One Saturday, Miller was on his way home on his motorcycle when the traffic 1 in front of him. Miller stopped and was 2 to know what was causing the traffic jam. "I went to see why everyone was stopping and found a bald eagle in the middle of the road," Miller said. "Another person was there and he gave the bird a 3 to see if she would walk or fly away. She spread her 4 but was unable to go anywhere."
The bird was too badly hurt to 5 . As an animal lover, Miller knew he had to help the bird that was 6 . So he took off his favorite shirt and threw it over the eagle. To his 7 .the eagle remained calm as he 8 her in the shirt.
Once Miller had moved the eagle out of the 9 , he called 911 and eventually got in touch with a local recovery center for 10 birds. Miller held the 15-pound bird for about 45minutes while 11 1 rescue staff to arrive. But the time seemed to pass quickly. "I wasn't really thinking about it when I was 12 her," Miller said. "I was just trying to keep her calm and make sure she knows she's 13 , and I wasn't going to drop her."
After a few days'14 , the rescuers are confident that the bald eagle will finally be able to return into the wild.
As for Miller's favorite shirt, it has some blood on it, but Miller knows it was used for a good cause — and he will surely be 15 it again.
As an old saying in Xunpu, Fujian province goes, "put flowers in your hair in this life and you'll also be pretty in the afterlife". The colorful and special floral headdress is known zanhua or zanhuawei. Zanhua (list) as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
The headdress inspired Huang Rongbing's career choice. In 2016, he and his older sister opened a salon. There, tourists can get their hair style d in the Xunpu tradition and have their photos (take)."We have been fully booked and now there are over 200 businesses offering services (dress) tourists with a zanhua," said Huang.
The increase in tourist visits has made Huang happy. That's because it not only keeps the business busy, also helps spread the history and culture behind zanhua headwear. After(go) through the full zanhua experience, Hu Titi, one of Huang's (customer),even brought zanhua culture to Paris in France last year. Under the Eiffel Tower, she shot photos and videos of herself dressed in (tradition) Chinese clothes with a zanhua in her hair.
Huang said the women of Xunpu, are famous for catching sea food, are hard-working, warm-hearted and brave. "When they put a zanhua on their heads, they express their wish for happiness. The flowers are seen as symbol of hope," he added.

Mary was the only child of her parents. One day, she and her mother burst into a great quarrel. Mary rushed out of the house with anger. Walking up and down the street for a long time, she felt tired and hungry. There happened to be a middle-aged man selling noodles at a stand beside her. But she had to sigh and leave because of no money.
The man saw Mary and asked, "Hi, girl, would you like some noodles?"
"Yes, but no…I don't have any money on me," Mary answered.
"Then it will be my treat this time," invited the seller.
The seller handed her a bowl of inviting noodles. Mary couldn't wait to eat up all the yummy food... then, tears rolled down her face slowly.
"What's wrong?" asked the seller considerately.
"Nothing," Mary answered. "You are so kind!" Mary thanked the seller again and again when she cleaned her face. "Even a person who I came across in the street would care about me, while my mom just criticized me and drove me out of the house. I can't understand why she is so mean and cruel to me!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times that she has cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?"
Mary was lost in deep thought; mom's smiling face and rough hands emerged in her mind.
"Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mom for what she has done for me."
When Mary returned home, she decided to say sorry to her mom for her rude behavior.
