Once there lived a wise man who had a very lazy son. The wise man was worried about his son's 1 for the son did nothing all day long. One day he said to his son, "There was some treasure in a faraway place and I want you to find it 2 , no matter how long it takes you. I have drawn a map to guide you and it will be your only partner. " Then he gave his son a bag. Inside the bag there 3 some food, a little money and the map.
His son set out on his long journey the next day. He had to travel across forests, rivers and mountains. Along the way,he was helped by some with food and by some with shelter(住所). He also saw changing scenery(风景)and different seasons. Finally, he reached the place his father4 . He spent two days digging for the treasure, but found 5 .
Feeling 6 , he had to go home. On his way back, he sometimes would stop to enjoy the beauty of nature. He also learned to hunt and make meals. He had to fix his own shelter by himself. He was able to tell 7 by the position of the sun, find his way out by the marks he made and protect himself 8 wild animals. Also,he met the same people who had helped him 9 . This time,he helped them in return.
After he reached home, he apologized(道歉)to his father because he didn't find the treasure. "There wasn't any treasure in the very first place,my son," the father answered with a smile. "10 I think you have found your life's true treasure. "
On a farm lived a father and a son. The father always got up early and read books by the stove. One morning, the son came up to him and said, "Dad, I read books at night but forget most of them the next morning. What's the good of reading?"
The father didn't reply right away. He passed him a basket that was used to carry coal. He said, "Get some water from the river with the basket and then I'll tell you the answer. "
The son felt surprised but he did as his father said. He tried many times but every time the water leaked (漏掉) from the basket.
An hour later, the son came back with the empty basket and told his father he failed. The father said with a smile, "Yes, my son. The basket can't hold water. But did you notice the basket was different?" Just then the son found the basket wasn't dirty any more. The father continued, "Reading is like holding water with the basket. We can't hope to remember all we read, but we have changed while reading. "
(自然生态)If you travel in New Zealand, you may find some very interesting things. It is called "New Zealand Four Strange Things".
Have you ever seen that cows are lined up? New Zealand is so large. It is impossible for people to milk cows by hand. So the farmers trained the leading cow to take the cows to the milking station twice a day. The leading cow has a sensor(传感器)on its head. When it is time for milking, the sensor warns the leading cow to take the lead. |
Horses are mainly raised for viewing(观赏)and racing, so the coat color is very important. Wearing sunscreen(防晒)clothes on horses can avoid the harm from the sun. The clothes on horses are filled with weights that are the same weight of the rider. When the weights are replaced by the rider during the race, "the horses will be used to running with weights" just like the sportsman running with sandbags. |
Sheep in New Zealand used to have tails. Because they poop(排便)when they're born, grass flies are interested in them. Grass flies lay their eggs in the tails of the baby sheep, causing illness and death. Then people tie their tails. As time passes, the sheep become tailless. This improves the survival rate(成活率). |
New Zealand's alpacas(羊驼)were introduced from South America. They are quite different from two-humped camels(双峰驼). An alpaca weighs about 55 kg to 65 kg. Its shape is like a sheep. Only one grown-up male(雄性)alpaca can be found in each group. It is the leading one. Alpacas are gentle, clever and human. |
When I first went to Britain,a lot of things seemed strange to me. For example, people drove on the left side of the road and many people carried an umbrella all the time. There were also many other things that I found really surprising.
The first thing I noticed was how polite British people were. When I got on the bus,the driver would greet me;when people got off the bus, they would say "Thank you" to the driver;when I went into a shop,I would be greeted by a smiling salesman.
The family I stayed with were very nice, but their house was full of peculiar(奇怪的)things. Firstly, there were carpets everywhere, even in the bathroom. Also, the bathroom was full of surprises. The first time I tried to wash my hands I burned myself. The cold and hot water came out of different taps. Then, when I tried to dry my hair,I couldn't find a socket(插座) for my hairdryer. Maybe that wasn't such a big surprise. More surprising was the fact that British people didn't take their shoes off when they went into a house—can you imagine?
I guess that for British people all of these things are normal. It's only when you visit a foreign country that you realize that what you think is normal is not. Normality depends on where you are.
A zero-waste life is a lifestyle that hardly creates any rubbish. "Zero waste" was first suggested by a French woman called Bea Johnson. Her idea is:live a life and try not to create any rubbish;use different kinds of ways to save the environment, such as stopping the use of one-off objects;giving unwanted things to others or donating these things to organizations like the Red Cross.
A zero-waste life follows the 6R rule—Refuse,Reduce,Reuse,Repair,Recycle and Rot. Chen Yuan,27,is deeply interested in this idea. She and her boyfriend Joe have lived in Beijing for many years. Over August—October when Chen followed the rule of zero waste 6R,she and her boyfriend both produced only two cans of rubbish. Now the couple have opened a small shop in Beijing, where they use wood products to take the place of plastic ones and cloth bags printed with environmentally logos. The store also has second-hand books and CDs to make the best of the used things.
"The zero-waste lifestyle is not for ascetics(苦行僧). It is just around us. " Chen expects some of her friends to join her on the road to zero waste.

bike road always ride wild
In a small village there was a postman. When he was 20 years old,he started sending all kinds of happy or sad to the villagers' homes 50 kilometers away day after day. Twenty years. by,and so many changes took place, but there were still no flowers or trees along the, only flying dust.
"How long shall I go along this dusty road?" As soon as he thought he had to spend his life the bike on the road with no flowers or trees,he felt very sad.
One day when he finished sending the letters and was to return,he passed by a flower shop. "Right, that's it!" He walked into the shop, bought some
flower seeds, and the next day he began to drop these seeds along the road. After one day,two days, one month, two months…He kept dropping the wild flower seeds.
Before long,a lot of flowers came out along the road, blooming(开花)in all seasons.
For the villagers, the flowers and the sweet smell were pleasant than any letters the postman sent in all his life.
