The Ugly Duckling
It'sa hot summer. The mother duck is looking at her1 . She is very happy, and she is waiting. "Quack ! Quack !" the baby ducklings(鸭子) come out one by one. But the biggest egg is still there. Hi everybody , We see your names on the Pen Friends list. You want to get e-mails from English children. So here we are! We live near Oxford(牛津),in the UK. We are 11 years old (Emma )and 10 years old (Ben) . We goto school in Oxford. There are 400 boys and girls between 8 and 13in our school. We have lessons from 9:00 a.m. to lunchtime. After lunch, we usually have lessons or sports. We have English, math, science, history(历史), art, P.E. and other subjects. Emma's favorite subjects are math and science. Ben's favorite subjects are art and music. He doesn't like math. There are three terms(学期) in a year, and we do different sports in each term. A Kind Grandmother
Mrs. Wallace had two grandchildren. They lived near her house. They visited her house every day after school.
She was very good at making things. One day she made some beautiful
dolls and gave them to her grandchildren to play with.
The grandchildren wanted some pet rabbits, and Mrs. Wallace said she
could make a hutch to keep them in. The children went to ask their parents.
"Can we please have some pet rabbits?" they asked.
"Where will you keep them?" their father asked. "You need a hutch for them."
"Grandma will make a hutch for them," the children said.
The father and mother talked about it. They told the children they could have two rabbits. But they must put them in the hutch.
Mrs. Wallace went to a shop and bought wood, paint and nails (钉子). She worked all daywhen the children were at school. After school they came to watch and help.
The next day Mrs. Wallace finished (完成) the hutch and painted it. Then she thought about how to get it to the children. It was too big to put into her car.
"I know," she thought. "I'll put it on the wheelbarrow(手推车) and wheel it there. It's not far."
On the way to the children's house, aman saw her and said. "That's very nice. Did you make it yourself?"
"Yes," she said happily." I made it for my grandchildren." "Really?" he said. "I thought it was for rabbits!
A Good Idea
There was asign on the bridge. It says, "Danger! Low(低的) bridge." But the driver of the van did not see it. When he drove the van through the bridge , there came a terrible noise(声音), and the van suddenly stopped just under the bridge.
The driver tried to drive the van back, but he couldn't move it. The men passing by tried to help him move the van out of the bridge. They pushed(推)and pushed ,but they could not move the van back.
The driver telephoned a garage(修理厂) and, a few minutes later, a truck gothere from the garage. The man from the truck tied(拴) the van to the truck. Then he tried to use the truck to pull(拉) the van out. The truck pulled, and the men pushed, but the van did not move at all.
The men got very tired and stopped pushing. Other people were angry because they could not move their cars. No one knew what to do. Then a little girl had an idea. She pulled the truck driver's armand wanted to say something to him. The truck driver did not notice(注意)her, but the girl pulled his arm again. This time the truck driver listened, and the little girl said something in his ear.
There was a smile on the truck driver's face. He nodded(点头) when he was listening to the girl's words. He went to the van and pressed(按压) the mouths on the van's tyres(轮胎),The air came out and the van began to come down. Then the van's driver drove the van out easily.
AFamily Bakery
It's 3:00 in the morning. Angela is ready to start the day at the family bakery(面包房). Vincent and his wife, Angela, are its owners(主人).
Everyone in the family works in the bakery. The oldest daughter, Claire, is good at making cakes. Maria is the middle child. She works at the counter(柜台),and sometimes she makes cookies. Paul, the youngest, is 14,and he makes bread. Vincent says, "Paul has good hands for bread." All the family work in the bakery ,but the children only work there before or after school.
