Madison Checketts is a 12-year-old girl from Utah, the USA. She has always loved the 1 . When on vacation with her family in California, she couldn't turn a blind eye to all the plastic water bottles 2 her favorite beaches. So she decided to focus on (专注于) 3 plastic litter.
When Madison started researching plastic water bottles online, she found that Americans use more than 35 billion plastic water bottles every year, and most of them are not recycled 4 .
So Madison tried to 5 an environment-friendly water bottle. After lots of research and hard work, she designed the Eco Hero-an edible (可食用的) water bottle. People can poke (戳) a(n) 6 at the top of it, drink the water, and then eat it. It 7 only about $1.20 to make one.
"It took a lot of effort to develop the Eco-Hero," says Madison. "I just kept trying something new, and 8 it didn't work, I would do more research and try again. As for the future of the Eco-Hero, I want to do more tests to improve it and make it more stronger, bigger and be able to last for a 9 time. Also, I hope my invention will inspire (激励) 10 to make a difference, even if it's just in a small way."
How late is too late to return a book to the library? For a library in California, the USA, the answer is never. After a historical book was checked out 96 years ago, it was returned to the library by a man this May.
According to Chris Kreiden, director of the library, the name of the book is A History of the United States and it was written by Benson Lossing.
So how did this book make its way back to the library nearly a century later? It started with a mystery: A man returned the book without leaving any information. In the book, a library worker found a library note with the date "February 21, 1927".
What places had the book been to? Who had it been with? These questions didn't stay unanswered for long. The mystery was solved after Jim Perry shared the story with the local newspaper.
"I didn't know how special it was," said Jim. He explained that he found the book while cleaning old boxes in his house. He said the book had been in his family for five generations (代) and was probably checked out by his grandfather-in-law.
Now the book is kept inside a display case (展柜) at the library, reminding people of a simple yet important message: It's never too late to return your library book.

Have you ever thought about driving in a "bed car"? Is there a "car" which can be driven both on the road and in the water? Can we own a "car" that can help to water flowers with a remote control (遥控)? These may sound crazy, but a man named Gu Yupeng has made it come true.
Born in 1983, Gu had the dream of being a car inventor at a young age, but his family is poor. To realize his dream, Gu had to start his first job right after junior high. However, he got hurt badly by accident while working in 2017, which made him give up the job. After that, he began raising pigs to make a living. With the money he made, he created all kinds of amazing "cars" with used materials like waste steel (钢) and engines (发动机).
In 2019, Gu shared his videos of his "magic cars" on the internet, and soon he got millions of fans. So many people like him not only because of his videos, but also because of his passion (热情) for life and his creativity. If the "magic cars" are finally produced someday, will you buy one?
The meaning of life is what we choose it to be. To Jiang Bing, a man from Weinan, Shaanxi Province, life just means living and helping others. Suffering (受苦) from ALS (渐冻症) for more than 30 years, Jiang has never lost his love for life. What's more, he has been teaching more than 200 children for free for over twenty years.
At the age of 16, Jiang Bing fell to the ground on the way to school and was unable to stand up again. One doctor told him that he had a disease that was hard to cure (治愈) and suggested giving up searching for treatment. Surprisingly, Jiang was really sad at first. Then he faced it positively instead of feeling fearful (害怕的) and hopeless. He kept studying every morning and valued every moment, spending one day like it was a month.
Though Jiang couldn't enter a university himself because of the disease, he succeeded in teaching his younger sister and helping her get into a university in 1994. Later, the people living in the community realized that the special man could teach their children. So they asked him for help. The next year, Jiang started helping children with their studies. He could also teach them art and clay sculpture (泥塑). He once taught 24 children in one single class, all for free.
Today many of the children that he taught have finished their university studies. Zhao Feiyu, a student who once received Jiang's help, runs an art training school now. "He taught us wisely and carefully, and took no money," he said. "He is my teacher and friend."
Have you ever wondered why you can speak Chinese well but find it hard to speak English? Maybe you think it's easier than English. You are wrong! Chinese seems easy because you've spoken it since childhood. Now, we can't go back to our childhood to learn English, but we can learn from kids.
Play to learn.
Kids learn when they play games. You can't just learn English by reading a textbook or you will lose attention. You can learn English through imaginative play (想象游戏) like a kid. You can imagine that you're ordering a meal in London.
Learn in an English-speaking environment.
Kids learn from people around them. They see, listen, experience and speak. You'll need to create a similar learning environment. For example, you can stay with friends who are learning English, too. That's helpful for English learning. As there is usually one central topic, you can hear and learn some words about the topic in the English-speaking environment.
One of the reasons kids learn so well is that they have no fear! Don't worry about making mistakes-just keep practicing until you get things right! But if you stick to it, and you will achieve your goals. Trust me-it's worth it!
A. It's important to retell what you read.
B. Don't be afraid of making mistakes.
C. Learning a language takes time and effort.
D. Don't choose a book that is too easy or too difficult.
E. Here are some advice on learning English like a kid.
F. If you don't have such friends, go to an English corner.
G. Think about how you talk to others and what food you would pick in English.
