A rich boss owned a busy restaurant. On one holiday, he needed to hire extra workers. Early that morning, he went out to find some. He saw a man. He was looking for work.
"I will pay you $75 for the day. Would you like a job?" the boss asked.
" Ok, well, that sounds fair." said the man. So he followed the boss to his restaurant to wash dishes, At noon, the boss went out again. He saw a woman. He promised to pay her well. At last the woman also went to work in his restaurant. Late in the afternoon, the boss went out one more time. He saw a man on a street corner.
" Why are you doing nothing?" he asked.
"I have no job." the man answered sadly.
" Well, then," said the boss," come and work in my restaurant." And he promised to pay him for his time.
When the restaurant closed, the boss called the three workers.
" It's time to pay you wages," the boss said.
"I will pay the one who started in the late afternoon first," The boss gave $75 to the last worker. The man who had worked since early morning saw this and was very happy. He was certain that he would be paid more. But the boss handed $75 to the woman who had started at noon and to him. He took $75 but complained to the boss.
" The man who was hired last worked only a few hours," he said. "I worked hard the whole day washing dishes but you paid me the same amount as you paid him."
" Listen, friend," said the boss."I have not cheated you. You agreed to work a whole day for$75. Now take your money and go home. Can't I do what I like with my own money? Or are you upset because I am generous(慷慨的)? Each person agreed to work for the wage I offered. You will never be happy if you compare yourself with others. Comparing and complaining always makes people unhappy."
Gareth Ellis, 13, is the youngest son of Alan, an engineer and Kath, a teacher. His older brothers work in banking and computers, but Gareth's dream was always to become a clown(小丑). Three years ago, Alan, Kath and Gareth joined the circus(马戏团)." People laugh when we tell them," says Kath.
" But it's true. Gareth has wanted to be a clown since we took him to circus when he was three."
When Alan lost his job, he and Kath decide to see if they could find full- time circus jobs. They both got jobs with a famous circus and Gareth began training to be a clown. He calls himself Bippo. They travel with the circus during the summer and return home for the winter. Gareth's brothers are old enough to look after the house while they are away.
" It was difficult," says Kath." There was a lot to think about and organize. We only had a car and a very small caravan(拖车) to sleep in, and we were leaving behind our lovely house. The only thing Gareth missed was his long, hot baths."
" People ask about my education," says Gareth, " but from the beginning, wherever we go, someone has always come to teach me. I follow the same books as everyone back at school andI' ve got a computer. I' ve never fallen behind my classmates."
And the future? " It was a difficult decision," says Kath, " but there was no other way to teach Gareth about being a clown. I'm happy to say it's working, and we' re enjoying it." And Gareth? "I'm going to be the main clown in a circus one day," he says, " perhaps Bippo the Clown".
What time is it? The answer you give can be different, because you are in different Earth's time zones(时区). But how could you tell the time if you are not anywhere on Earth?
Scientists are now thinking of creating a lunar(月球的) time zone. They believe it would be better for astronauts to communicate by using Moon Time, as they travel to, from, and across the Moon. At the moment, astronauts are using time zones of their own countries. But there could be safety problems caused by the differences in time- telling.
____ Gravity(引力) influences how quickly or slowly time passes. Since gravity is weaker on the Moon, clocks run a bit faster there. After 24 hours, a lunar clock would be56 microseconds ahead of a clock on Earth. Another point to consider is that a full day on Earth is about 24 hours between two sunsets. While on the Moon, it is nearly 709 hours, about 29.5 Earth days. This means that lunar night s can be around two weeks long, with only the Earth and the stars in the sky. With all this to think about, scientists need to decide whether it would be better to follow a time zone on Earth, or for the Moon to have its own special zone, which would have much longer days.
Scientists must consider other problems too. For example, who should be responsible for keeping the time zone going? And how can it be made practical for astronauts to use?
There are more countries planning Moon trips in the future. The idea of creating a time zone on the Moon would make these easier. And if a lunar time zone is set up, scientists could create time zones for other planets like Mars.

Five tips for a successful yard sale
Each summer, yard sales become popular and many people come to yards to get great deals on second- hand objects. Have you ever had a yard sale? What can you do to hold a successful yard sale? Here are five tips for you.
Every yard has its own advertisement. The best ad is signs. Draw some big signs with just "Yard Sale" and a large arrow (箭头) on a board in front of your yard. Pointing customers (顾客) in the right way is always better than just putting your address on the sign and hoping they know how to get there.
The more organized you are, the less busy it will be the morning of your yard sale. You want to make sure that you have everything set up before people arrive so you can have more time for answering questions and collecting money.
This is something a lot of people don't think about when preparing for a yard sale. You don't want to turn away customers because you don't have enough change. I suggest at least $50 in change, which means mostly $1's and $5's.
Running a yard sale on your own can be really stressful, especially if you have a lot of objects to sell. It's hard to run inside to go to the bathroom or try to talk to and collect money from several customers at once. Ask a friend or two if they have something they'd like to sell too and that way you'll have some help in case things get busy or you need a break to get a drink or some food.
Yard sales are fun and you can make a good amount of money. It's also a good chance for you to chat with your customers, make them feel comfortable, and enjoy yourself.
Nevado Del Ruiz is a mountain in Colombia. It is 5,425 meters high and it is popular with climbers. It is beautiful, but it is 1 , too. The weather can change 2 on the mountain. One minute it is sunny, and the next minute it is cloudy. One minute it is warm, and the next minute it is cold.
On a sunny morning in June, Leonardo Diaz began climbing Neva do Del Ruiz with some friends. On the second day of their climb, there was a snowstorm. It was difficult to walk in the3 , and it was difficult to see. The climbers decided to 4 and walk- down the mountain. Leonardo stopped for a minute to get something out of his backpack. When he looked 5 , his friends were gone. He couldn't see them or their footprints in the snow." Wait!" Leonardo shouted. But his friends couldn't hear him in the storm.
All day Leonardo continued down the mountain alone. That night he put up his tent, crawled inside, and slept. He was in big 6 when he woke up the next morning. His clothes were not7 enough, so he was very cold. He was hungry, too,8 he had no food left. He decided to 9 for help. He opened his backpack and took out his cell phone. It didn't work. Leonardo had no more prepaid minutes on his phone.
All morning Leonardo stayed in his tent and listened to the 10 . He began to think, " MaybeI' ll 11 on this mountain."
Then his cell phone 12 .
" Hello?" he answered.
" Good afternoon," a woman said. "I'm calling from Bell South Phone Company. You have no minutes left on your cell phone. Would you like to buy more minutes?"
" Yes, but not now!"" Leonardo said."I need help. I'm 13 on a mountain."
" Stay where you are," the woman said. "I' ll14 help."
Late that night, a rescue team arrived and helped Leonardo down the mountain.
Leonardo says he will probably try again to climb Nevado Del Ruiz. But the next time, he will bring plenty of warm clothes and plenty of food. He will also bring a15 with plenty of prepaid minutes.
The first magazine in the UK especially for teenagers was called Honey which was about fashion, beauty and pop stars and was clearly girls. Nowadays, there are lots of different teenage magazines sold all over the world, but how much ( change) over the years? We asked two teenagers to tell us about their favorite magazines.
I' ve had my favorite magazine, Teen Spirit, since it ( come) out last year. There is lots of advice for teenagers on things that have meaning to ( we) lives- such as exam stress and what you can do you fall out with your best friend. The fashion articles are cool because they show normal girls in normal clothes. It's really good value too, they usually give away a free gift with it, like an MP3 download.

I haven't seen many magazines for teenage boys yet, except for a couple of football magazines. For me, I'm interested in ( compete) with others in Formula 1(一级方程式赛车), and I buy FI Racing every month. There's online version (版本) of the magazine too. It's( cheap) than the paper version and you can watch videos and listen to ( record) from interview s with writers and reporters.

The Pleasanton Partnerships in Education Foundation (PPIE), an organization in America, was started in 1987 to raise money for local schools. (最近), it hosted a running event for the community. To date, it has raised $1 million for the school district.
" We have (多于)3,000 runners, volunteers and spectators, said Mindy Louie, the manager for PPIE. This year's event had races of two miles, five kilometers and (十) kilometers. The BURN Youth Development(B. Y. D.),a(当地的) runners' group, joined in it as well.
" The B. Y. D. was born in 2020 to help keep kids positive in life," explained Jerry Wu, its(领导者) and coach. The B. Y. D. has since grown to include more than 100 young (成员) and 30 of them ran in this year's PPIE event." Watching them running makes me(微笑) every time," said Jerry Wu.
So far, Jerry Wu has (教) students valuable running skills for about three years. Eighth grader Ollie Gu is one of his excellent students. He completed the race in 40 minutes and 46 seconds and (赢) first place in the 12-15 age group.
" What an (有教育意义的) race!" Ollie said."I'm looking forward to it next year."
