This story brings to mind a colorful chocolate dish and a very little boy. It was between Christmas and New Year when a few chocolate in a dish brightened up a boring1 day.
It was very cold that day. My 3yearold 2 ,Justin, and I had run from the warmth of my parked car into the building where I had a few workrelated tasks to take care of.
A secretary greeted us as we brushed the 3 from our clothes and rubbed our hands to warm them. Then, with my grandchild staying close to me,I busied myself. But 4 his hand remained in mine, his eyes moved to the chocolate dish sitting nearby. It seemed to say "I'm a bit 5 ".
As we turned to leave, the thoughtful woman behind the desk asked the question all children 6 to hear.
"Honey,"she said, looking closely at Justin. "Would you like a chocolate cane?"
The boy was 7 up questioningly. His eyes met mine, permission(允许) hanging in the air. After a slight nod from me he hurried over to the chocolate dish. 8 hesitation(犹豫),his fat little hands caught one—and only one—and then he began to make his way back to 9 .
"Justin!"I said from the doorway,a little 10 when I realized manners had been forgotten. "What do you say?"
The little boy 11 to the chocolate dish.
"Get Grandma one,too!"
I laughed. The secretary laughed. And even little Justin innocently(天真地) 12 the fun we were having.
But in that moment,I saw 13 about Justin that remained long after the taste of the chocolate had disappeared. My grandchild was already a person with a lot of 14 in his heart. What could be15 than that?
In the years since,I've enjoyed a laugh or two thinking back on that moment.

I was in a shopping mall for two hours, so I decided to go and get a cup of coffee. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman poorly dressed sitting near the shop. I knew from the first sight that he needed help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was enjoying it. It was clear that he had a problem with his right eye. I then joined the line and waited to be served.
Then it happened. One of the most beautiful gestures I had ever seen in my life. There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. The next thing I knew was that the young man handed the waitress 20 dollars and requested a glass of juice as a favor(善行). The waitress looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside, as well as the change from the 20 dollars. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe. Then there was a wonderful exchange between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I could take a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.
As I was considering this event later, I wondered why the young man didn't perform this act of kindness himself. Maybe he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire(激励) others to do something for this old man as well.
①Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.
②So how? The cars have sensors (感应器) all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems (卫星导航系统) are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is to type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.
③Sound like your idea of heaven? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while ‘driving' would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people – they would obey the rules and have quicker reaction times when in dangerous situations.
④However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical (道德的) decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially (可能地) kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun – I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made – should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?
⑤I'm not certain I'd want a driverless car – but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads.
Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Are you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard? Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something you're your senses. Then messages are sent to different brain cells, which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your short—term memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long—term memory.
Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long—term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food, such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don't forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.
When you want to remember new information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses--sight, smell, hearing and touch-and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual(视觉的) connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but it's fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind yourself of something to remember!

Who Has the Real Problem?
A man is afraid that his wife wasn't hearing, she might need a hearing aid. So, he called the family doctor to have a (讨论) about this problem. The doctor told him about a (简单的) test he could use to get a better idea about her hearing loss.
"Here's what you do, " said the doctor, "Stand about 40 feet (12 metres) away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone to see if she can (听到) you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on (直到) she answers you.
That evening, the man's wife was in the kitchen (煮) dinner, and he was in the yard. "I'm about 40 feet away, " he said to himself. "Let's see what will happen. "Then, in a normal tone, he asked, "Honey, what's for dinner?" But she didn't answer.
So the husband moved (更近) to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife, and asked again, "Honey, what's for dinner?"She still didn't answer.
Next, he moved into the dining room where he was about 20 feet from his wife and asked, "Honey, what's for dinner?"
Again he got no (回复). He walked up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. "Honey, what's for dinner?" Again his wife didn't answer.
So he walked right (在……的旁边) her. "Honey, what's for dinner?""James, for the(第五) time, chicken!" his wife answered (生气).
Do you know who has the real problem?
I' m John Wood, a doctor at a famous Boston hospital. During the (one) two years of high school, I found biology very hard . My report cards always said things like "must study harder" or "John shouldn't choose science (class) ." It was really terrible for someone had always dreamed of becoming a doctor. I lost confidence, so I (leave)high school at sixteen and started working at a supermarket.
One evening I saw a documentary Albert Einstein. According to the documentary, Einstein had done really (bad) at school. I began to think that Einstein could (success), then I may have a chance, too. I didn't want to leave my job, __ I decided to go to night school to finish high school. Two years later , I went to medical university.
I've often thought I should contact(联系) the (report) of the Einstein documentary and thank him. As for the biology teacher, I might contact her, too, one day - but not to thank her!
How can we be a frugal consumer?
We need to be responsible for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节俭的消费者) is one way to help. But what exactly does that mean?
◎
You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze(挤) that last bit of toothpaste out of the tube. Use the last little piece of soap. Don't throw away any bits of the biscuit at the bottom of the box.
◎
You do not always need to have new things. Suppose your sneakers have broken laces(鞋带), but they still fit you. Repair them and wear them longer. You don't need the latest iPhone until your old one doesn't work anymore. Then you can get a new one.
◎
When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a butter sandwich. You are out of butter. What about using cheese to make a cheese sandwich? With a little thought, you can make something do, instead of buying something new.
◎
Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy you saw on TV? Making the things that we want uses resources(资源). And getting rid of the things we don't want any more takes up even more resources and space.
A.Make It Do B. Clean It Up C. Think It Over D. Use It Up E. Wear It Out |
