Adele was helping Grandma in the garden. She was 1 in all the things in it.
"Why do you put big rocks here, Grandma?" Adele 2 and asked.
Grandma smiled, "You will know the 3 someday, honey." Adele looked at the rocks. They just sat there, as if they were waiting for her to 4 their secrets (秘密).
One morning, Adele went into Grandma's garden as usual. It had rained the night before, so it was a bit cold. But the sun was shining 5 .
Suddenly, Adele noticed 6 . On the rocks sat so many yellow and black butterflies. That's really amazing!
As Adele watched carefully, the butterflies were just 7 to fly. Then Adele looked more closely at the rocks, but they seemed nothing 8 . Finally, she 9 one of them. It was so warm! Adele cried excitedly, "Grandma, I know why you placed the rocks here! Because the butterflies 10 sit and warm themselves here!"
Grandma replied smilingly, "You're right! Butterflies can 11 fly when their temperature is above 27℃. So when it is 12 , they must take in some heat from the outside first.
"I got it! The rocks will become warm under the sunshine. 13 butterflies sit on the rocks, they could warm themselves, too. Then they could fly.
"That's it!" Grandma 14 .
Adele laughed, too, "Now I know one thing, Grandma. When I grow up, I'm going to have a garden just like 15 . And it will have lots and lots of butterfly rocks!"
Congratulations, Jonathan! When Jonathan, the giant tortoise (巨型陆龟) was born, Queen Victoria was just a teenager. The ruler of the United Kingdom died more than 120 years ago at the age of 81, while Jonathan is still moving around, on one of the world's most faraway islands. On December 4, he turned 190 years old. This makes him the oldest known tortoise on earth. ____ When Msituni was born, zookeepers were worried that the baby giraffe might die. She was hardly able to stand upright because of the wrong way in which her front legs were bent (弯曲). Now, thanks to the braces (支架), she has become healthy and can play with other giraffes. What a Giant! Scientists have found the fossil of the heaviest known penguin on Earth. They believe this penguin weighed more than 150 kilograms. This is about three times heavier than the emperor penguin (帝企鹅), the largest of all living penguin species. This giant probably lived between 55 and 60 million years ago, around the time when the dinosaurs died out. |
Three cute little brown bears (棕熊) got lost and couldn't find their mother. Then they became popular on the Internet. Could these three little ones find their mother?
Gelek Gyatso, an ecological protection officer (生态保护官员), found the cute little brown bears when he was patrolling (巡逻) a riverbed in Yushu, Qinghai. At first, the little brown bears thought Gelek Gyatso was their mother. They quickly ran to Gelek Gyatso, and then stopped to look at him. After finding that the man was not their mother, they turned around and ran along the river calling for their mom.
With what he'd learnt about wild (野生的) animals, Gelek Gyatso guided the little brown bears to an area near their home. He hoped the bears could have a reunion. Luckily, later that same afternoon, other patrol officers found that the mother bear stayed together with the little brown bears.
This year is Gelek Gyatso's tenth year as an ecological protection officer. He patrols the area every day, writes down the animals he sees, watches the trees and makes sure that they grow well. He also works to keep the area clean.
With Gelek Gyatso's care, the ecological environment (环境) of his hometown is very different from what it was many years ago. Also, there are more and more wild animals there. Everyone is playing a role in saving the wildlife, making the world a more beautiful place.
Booking a museum ticket this past summer was not easy. Visitors often found that tickets for the following week had been fully booked.
★ To many museum staff, such crowds had not been seen before. So, what was behind this "museum craze"?
Part of the reason is a growing interest in traditional Chinese culture, according to Guo Sike. He is in charge of the Confucius (孔子) Museum in Shandong province.
"Nowadays, young Chinese love traditional Chinese culture," said Guo. He added that modern technologies have also played a role. They allow people to experience and appreciate traditional culture in more ways.
The Shanxi History Museum in the city of Xi'an also saw an increase in visitors. The museum can only allow 12, 000 people to visit each day. Its ticket booking platform, however, received more than 600, 000 clicks a day. To solve the problem, the museum called off its Monday closures (闭馆). It was also open for more hours on Sundays.
Popular study tours (游学) also helped bring more people to museums. The Confucius Museum saw many of these tours. In order to meet their needs, it organized several different activities. For example, there were exhibitions to show people the Kong family's customs.
In Xi'an, the Qinqiang Opera was a popular subject of study tours. Local museums offered chances to learn the culture. For example, visitors could wear the performer's costumes and learn to sing the opera.
"People love the more hands-on travel experiences," said Yang Rong from the Shanxi Tourism Association.
"Museums are bridges. They connect the past, present and future," said Yang Chaoming a professor at Shandong University. "More and more people wish to. better learn about traditional Chinese culture through museum visits."

In the past, I didn't get on well with my parents. I hardly talked to them, because they liked to compare me with my sister. And that made me (happy) and sad. I didn't know to do. Sometimes I even (fight) with them about this.
However, I wanted to show them that I could do things as (good) as my sister. Then I began to spend most of my free time (paint) in my bedroom. (Lucky), my art teacher, Miss Green, offered me a lot of help. She taught me some drawing skills to help improve my paintings. At that time, she was the only person I would like (talk) with.
One day, I told Miss Green my problem. She encouraged me to take part in a (compete) for painters. She said the best way to communicate with my parents was to prove myself to them. After a few weeks' waiting, the result finally came out. I got the first prize! When I took the prize home, my parents were so happy they couldn't stop laughing all the time! And they began to care more about me. Now the relationship between my parents and me is very good. So I think it's very important to have someone to talk to.
