Do you like eating lemons? In France, there is a very special festival—the Lemon Festival. Every year, the French town of Menton holds the festival and it usually takes place between mid-February until March.
▲ . In 1929, Menton became the first producer of lemons. This fruit is loved by the world's best cooks. In the late nineteenth century, a town parade was held to encourage Menton's winter tourism(旅游业). Kings, princes and artists filled the great and comfortable hotels or their own fantastic houses. Because of its great success, the streets were beautifully planted with lemons in the following years. Then, in 1934 the Lemon Festival was officially born.
Sleepy Menton becomes a world of color during the festival time. Every year, around 145 tons of oranges and lemons are sent into the town. Over 300 workers work together to make huge sculptures(雕塑)out of fruits, such as towers, animals and so on. More than 230, 000 visitors will come together and have fun. Along with a daily Lemon and Orange Exhibition, there are parades(游行) on weekends and fireworks at nights. Once the festival ends, the lemons and oranges will be sorted by hand and sold at a special Sunday market.
Today, the Lemon Festival is still one of the largest winter events in French Riviera. So if you go to France during that time, make sure you experience the festival there!
①Everybody likes a birthday. Some people live long enough to have 120 of them. While in December 2022, the world's oldest land animal celebrated his 190th birthday. The animal is a Seychelles giant turtle (龟) called Jonathan.
②Experts believe he was born in 1832, but there are no official records of his birth. Some experts think Jonathan might actually be ten years older. He's the world's oldest land animal alive today—— at least the oldest that experts know about.
③ Jonathan was born in the Seychelles. He was taken to St. Helena in 1882 as a gift for the St. Helena governor. This means Jonathan has lived through countless wars, 40 US presidents, seven Japanese emperors and some of history's most important events: the first photograph, the first telephone call, and the first man on the moon.
④ The question is, what birthday gift do you get for a 190-year-old tortoise? Jonathan's vets said he had a good birthday. There was a three-day party for him. Chefs made him a special tortoise birthday cake that was full of his favorite vegetables. St. Helena also launched (发行) a set of special postage stamps to celebrate his birthday. But Jonathan did not get to see any of the celebrations because he is blind. He also has no sense of smell. However, he has an excellent sense of hearing, so he could hear "Happy Birthday" being sung.
⑤Jonathan's vet, Joe Hollins, said the giant tortoise still has plenty of energy and enjoys the same activities he has done for almost two centuries. He sleeps, eats fruits and vegetables with the two tortoises who live with him. He likes to relax in the sun. On warm days, he will sunbathe—— his long neck and legs stretched fully out of his shell.
Do you have a good memory? Can you remember English words you learnt last week? Or have you forgotten the deadline of your project? Many of us often say "My brain doesn't work well". Maybe you can try a new way of training your brain—Learn with your team members.
"Teamwork makes our brains work better. The memory expert, Jonathan Hancock said, "Being part of a team has many advantages for remembering things. "In his memory research, he finds that the participants(参与者) in a team always behave better than people who work independently. That's because they have less personal pressure, more time to think over each question.
But there's even more going on according to Canadian researchers, who've shown that our brains get a natural improvement when they've got company(陪伴). Their study suggests two reasons. First, when we're with people who are trying to remember something, we can easily feel that tip-of-the-tongue feeling, so we also want to join in to challenge ourselves. Second, after knowing others can remember things well, we can be encouraged to make it too.
To make better use of the power of team learning, you can use the contagion(传染效应) to awaken and improve memories. For example, go over new words together with your partners. Believe it or not, you'll be amazed at your magic memory. Also, you can share the duty together. If you have many tasks to remember, ask your partner to remember the date of school play while you're in charge of(负责) remembering project deadline. In this way, both of you will remember things more easily and deeply.

A few years ago we moved to a new city, so I had to change schools. On the first day at my new school, I was really. I found it hard to make new friends and hardly said a word to anyone for. When the morning break started, I went outside and stood on my own. I was feeling really lonely. Towards the end of break, a girl walked up to me. She introduced as Monica and started chatting right away. She was also quite new at the school and we soon we had a lot in common. We watched the same TV shows, listened to the type of music, and we were both learning to play the guitar. Also, we lived just a few minutes' walk from each other!
Monica and I have been really good friends since that day. Naturally we sometimes argue like everyone does but we're very close.
