DearDr Jackson, My parents are never pleased with me. They are always criticizing(批评) my clothes, my hair and the music I listen to. They ha te my friends' looks and they keep complaining when I go with them. I'm not allowed to stay out as late as my friends do, so I can't have any fun. My parents only seem to care about my school marks. Although I love them, sometimes I feel we live in different worlds. If they love me, why don't they understand me? Angel |
Dear Angel, Your problem is common to both teenagers and parents. Don't worry, because all this is natural. You see, your parents have grown up at a different time and they have different experiences. So, they think some things are strange, but you find the same things ordinary. For example, the music you like may sound like noise to them. Your parents love you, so they feel they must protect you from whatever they find strange. On the other hand, you don't want to be different teenagers, so you feel that your parents restrict you. I think you should talk about this problem with your parents. Try to explain to them what you want and make them know they can believe you. Sooner or later, they' ll find you are a responsible(有责任心的) person and they will give you more freedom. Dr Jackson |
Two men were sitting together in a plane. They were on a long journey. One of the men was a businessman. The other was a farmer. They sat without talking for a while, and then the farmer said, "Let's do something to pass the time."
"What do you want to do?" the businessman asked.
"We can ask each other riddles(谜语)," the farmer said.
"OK. Let's make rules first," the businessman said. "If you don't know the answer to a riddle, you pay me $ 100. And if I don't know the answer, I' ll pay you$100."
"That's not fair(公平). You are a businessman with much knowledge. You know more things than I do. I am just a farmer," the farmer said.
"That's true," the businessman said. "What do you want us to do?"
"If you don't know the answer to a riddle, you pay me $ 100. And if I don't know the answer, I' ll pay you $50," the farmer said. The businessman thought about this, and then he said, "OK. That's fair. Who will go first?"
"I will," the farmer said. "Here is my riddle. What has three legs when it walks, but only two legs when it flies?"
The businessman thought for a long time and said, "Mm, that's a good one. I'm afraid I don't know the answer." He gave the farmer $ 100, and then he said, "Tell me the answer."
"I don't know," the farmer said. Then he gave the businessman $50.
We' ve talked about snails(蜗牛) and their slow move. But much of the time snails don't move at all. They' re in their shells - - - sleeping.
Hot sun will dry out a snail's body. So at the least sign of hot sun, a snail draws its body into its shell and closes the opening with a thin cover. Then it goes to sleep. A snail will die in a heavy rain. So whenever it rains, it goes inside its shell house and goes to sleep. A snail can sleep for as long as it needs to. It can take a short sleep. Or it can sleep for days at a time. And it spends all the winter months in its shell, asleep.
In spring the snail wakes up. Its body, about three inches long, comes out of from the shell. When hungry, the snail looks for food. It can' t see very well. Its eyes, at the ends of the top feelers are very weak. But its sense of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to the new greens. Then the snail's little mouth goes to work.
A snail's mouth is no longer than the point of a pin(针). Yet it has 256,000 teeth! The teeth are so small that you can't see them. But they do their work.. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out. And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.
Mostly, a snail looks for food at night. But on cloudy days it eats in the daytime. It eats all day long. A snail can go on eating for hours and never feel full.
The National Literacy Trust once did some researches(调查) on reading. About 32,000 children from different schools in the UK answered the questions from it. These children are aged from 8 to 18.
The research shows that children in the UK are reading less in their free time. Just over a quarter of the students said they read outside school. About the same number said their parents didn't feel that reading was important. Half of those students said they enjoyed reading"very much" or"quite a lot". About two in five thought reading was"cool", but about one in three said they only read when they had to.
Jonathan Douglas from the National Literacy Trust said, "Our research not only shows that children are reading less and having negative attitudes(消极的态度) to reading but also shows the relationship(关系) between this and their performance in reading tests." The research also finds that many children in the UK like to read e- books outside school. The percentage in 2014 was about 6% and it grew to 12% in2015.
In today's world, there are so many activities for children to do. But if they sit down and do some reading, they will find reading is really interesting and useful.

I have a twin sister, Jenny. She has (长的) hair than me. Many people think (我们) must have a lot of things in (普通的, 常见的). That's not true. Jenny is creative. She won the best (奖) in the school talent show. She likes making friends, so she is more (外向的). But I like staying at home. And I watch TV (两次)a week because I have to go to school every day. I always get better (分数) but she is much less hard-working. So maybe I should help her. (然而), we also have some similarities(相似点). We (都) like sports and going shopping, so we can talk about and (分享) everything. I love my twin sister.
I am a middle school student. In the past, I had some bad habits. I almost never had breakfast I usually got up late. I didn't like exercising. I only exercised a few (time) a month. In the evening, I always watched TV for over two hours. Then I played online games for a long time, so I almost slept (little) than six hours every night. My parents thought (stay) up late was bad for my body and mind, so they got really (worry) about me.
One day, I fainted(晕倒) in a P. E. class. When I woke up, I found (I) lying in the hospital bed. The doctor said that my classmates brought me here. He said that I was not (health). Then he told me to eat breakfast every day and do more exercise.
From then on, I (decide) to change my bad habits. Now I usually get up early and have a good breakfast. I try to eat lots of vegetables and fruit every day. After school, I always spend time (play) sports together with my friends. It's fun and good way (relax).
Oh, I sleep nine hours every night. People often say, "Old habits die hard." ButI learned a lesson and changed it.
