Skate boarding, surfing and sport climbing were parts of the 2024 Paris Olympics. But they made their first Olympic appearance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. These are all popular sports among young people. Would you like to give them a try?
Skateboarding | In this sport, you ride on a skateboard and perform tricks. Some people skate on or over obstacles (障碍) such as stairs and rails. It's a sport that celebrates creativity and individuality (个 性) . There are about 11 million active skateboarders in the world. |
Surfing | Isn't it cool to ride breaking waves? Surfing is a free-spirited sport that allows you to"walk on water" with a surfboard. Surfers have their own language. "Surf's up!" means the surf is high enough to ride. "Wipeout!" means to fall off your board. |
Sport Climbing | Athletes have to climb a 15-meter-high wall. There are holds on the walls, but some of them are just big enough for a single fingertip. Climbing needs great strength, requiring the use of different muscles. Athletes can't see the wall before they compete. They must make quick decisions about which way they should take to reach the top. |
Marketing tents as single-use(一次性的)should be stopped, festival organisers(组织者) say, as people continue to try to cut down on plastic at festivals.
Single-use festival tents should not be used, to help avoid almost 900 tons of plastic waste each year, festival organisers have said.
A group of more than 60 festivals across the UK have pushed supermarkets such as Argos and Tesco to stop marketing and selling single-use tents. Festival-goers are also encouraged to take their tents home at the end of the festival.
About 250,000 tents are left at music festivals across the UK each year. Many are not collected and end up as waste.
The action to stop the tents ending up as waste starts with the Association of Independent Festivals(AIF). AIF's 10-year report found 10% of people attending its festivals had left a tent behind during that year's festival season. This works out as about 875 tons of plastic waste, which is the weight of 240 elephants.
In 2018, the first year of a promise to cut down on plastic, festivals reported some important changes: 40% of those who had signed the promise stopped the sale of drinks in single-use plastic cups, 67% sold reusable drinks bottles, and 87% encouraged the use of reusable bottles.
AIF CEO Paul Reed said, "The message here is not to buy a more expensive tent. Festival-goers can take their tent home and reuse it, making sure that it doesn't become a single-use tent this summer."
①It can be really embarrassing if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don't feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of advantages.
②You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us do things like making plans and managing our feelings. Talking to yourself loud is like showing this quiet inner(内在的) speech. It can help us do better in different areas like studies, sports and work.
③Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can help us manage bad feelings. "Talking to yourself in the third person is like giving yourself advice." said Jason Moser, a professor(教授) from Michigan State University in the US. Jason uses himself as an example. He does not like flying, but he often has to fly for his work. So when he is feeling nervous or afraid during a flight, he talks to himself-only silently. Well, you know, Jason knows air travel is very safe. And Jason has been on thousands of flights. This can help us to see things from a different aspect(角度), especially when we' re feeling sad or angry.
④When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence. A study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers divided the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.
⑤Self-talk also helps to improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: read silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. "Those who read out loud record the information best," Researchers said in their study. It's because the information will probably become a long-term memory if it is said out loud.
Plunk! I dropped another pecan(山核桃) into my basket. Then a gentle autumn wind blew some more off the tree. I ran to pick them up. Whew! Pecan picking was hard. My basket was only half full.
I was visiting my grandpa's farm in Kansas, and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later. I wasn't about to let him down.
Then something caught my eye: a squirrel picked up a pecan, climbed up a tree and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later, the squirrel climbed down to the ground to pick up another pecan. Once again, the squirrel took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow(洞) of the tree.
Not so secret any more, I thought. I ran over to the tree and found the hollow was filled with sweet pecans. They were right there for the taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full!
I was so proud of myself. I couldn't wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I'd collected.
"Look, Grandpa," I shouted, "look at all of the pecans I found!" Grandpa took a look at my basket. "Well, well, how did you find so many, Jimmy?" 1 told him how I'd followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place. Grandpa congratulated me on finding out something about the squirrel's secrets. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
"That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food," he said, "Now that all of his pecans are gone, don't you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold?"
"I didn't think about that." I said.
"I know," Grandpa said, "But a good man should never take advantage of someone else's hard work, even the squirrel's."
Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image(形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn't leave my mind.
There was only one thing I could do.
Life is full of surprises that sometimes change one's everyday life. They may influence your mind, feelings, and behaviour.
Some of the surprises might be good and some of them might not be so enjoyable. However, you need to understand that unexpected events (出人意料的事件) are part of life. When you accept this fact, you will deal with them more easily. . Sometimes, you think an event may cause problems, but in the end, it might make a good result. For example, even getting out of work could get a good result. That means you might find a better job.
Before getting angry or afraid, give the situation a careful thought. . So, instead of feeling bad, you'd better think about ways to get used to the new situation. If you can't, you'd better do something to make an improvement on it. This is more useful.
In other words, don't waste time to think about the past. Just go ahead to make the most of the present moment.
A. Lead a happy and comfortable life. B. In fact, not all unexpected events are bad. C. Often, the unexpected event is not hard to deal with. D. So you need to find a way to less influenced by them. E. Always pay your attention to the present moment and learn from it. |
What will you do if you meet unexpected events?
Be What's Missing
Where was that cashier(收银员)? Impatient, I quickly looked at my 1 . I hardly had enough time to eat a sandwich and rush back to work. I looked around the nearly empty 2 , but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman stood wiping( 擦 ) the far end of the counter( 柜 台 ). She3 me coldly with sad, dark eyes.
I4 , getting angry. I'd been standing there for at least three minutes!
Controlling my anger, I remembered Mom's words. "5 you find yourself in an unpleasant situation, just think about what is missing. If someone is unkind, then kindness is missing. If someone is hateful, then6 is missing. If we will be what's missing, then we'll7 whatever the situation needs."
And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How should I "be what's missing"? What was missing was8 . Maybe I should just jump behind the counter and take9 own order.
Just then the woman walked slowly towards me. "May I help you?" she asked, still10 . She looked so tired. No doubt, she was overworked.
I took a deep breath. With Mom's words ringing in my11 , I gave the woman my order and smiled, "How are you today?"
My question seemed to12 her. She eyed me for a second before answering. "Not too good."
"I'm sorry," I said. "I hope it gets better starting right now." She almost smiled as she looked at me. "Thanks. I hope you're right."
I thought to myself as I ate my sandwich. We're all the same, really. We have problems and anger, we get tired and we hurt. We need to be13 to each other.
After14 , I wiped the table cleaner than usual, and put the tray(托盘) back nicely on the stand. The woman was watching me, a big smile on her face.
"Be what's missing." It15 .

Bobi was a dog from Portugal(葡萄牙).When he and his three brothers were born in the family's woodshed(柴房),Costa's father decided to (扔) the four little baby dogs away since they already had too many animals at home. Costa, the 8-year-old boy, was really sad. However, a few days later, he surprisingly found Bobi (活着). Costa jumped up and down with joy when he had Bobi back.
Bobi had some simple living( 习 惯 ). He got up with Costa in the morning and went to bed with Costa at night. He had meals with Costa every day and ate what Costa had for meals. What's more, he always had a nap(打瞌睡) after meal. It was a must.
Bobi lived in a calm, peaceful and very "sociable" environment. After naps, Bobi always walked around (自由地)in the forests and farmland nearby without a chain(链条). What's more, he usually had four cat friends to hang around with!
However, as Bobi grew older, he wasn't full of ( 精 力 ) any more. He had din walking and sometimes hit things as he couldn't see clearly. But doctors said he was doing well for such an old age.
C with other dogs, Bobi lived a longer life, more than (两倍) as long as normal dogs do. He celebrated his 31st birthday on May 11, 2023 and passed away on October21st. That made him the world's oldest dog in history, a to Guinness World Records(吉尼斯世界纪录). People often ask Costa how Bobi could live such a long life. Costa always answered, "If he spoke, only he could explain this success. But I think living a happy life is the most important ( 原 因 )."
During the Warring States Period, there was man called Ban from the State of Lu. People usually called him Lu Ban. He(know) as the most excellent carpenter(木匠) then. It is said that he once made a bird of wood. It was so lifelike that it flew the sky for three days.
One day, a young carpenter came to a house had a big red door. He held up his ax and said, "I am a great carpenter. No matter what kind of wood it is, I can make it into anything." Hearing this, people around him all laughed. "This young carpenter is talking big now," they thought. One of them pointed to the big red door behind him and said, "Young man, can you make a (good) door than this one?" The young carpenter raised his head high (show) his confidence. Then he said, "No problem! I was the (one) student of Lu Ban." The crowd laughed again. Someone said, "This is Lu Ban's home. He made this door (he) ." The young carpenter's face turned red and he ran away(quick).
Thus comes the proverb "Ban Men Nong Fu". It means showing off slight (skill) in front of an expert.
