After my husband, Steven, arrived in Sydney on his own from India, he stayed in a hotel for a short time while1a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his2,he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to3that his suit, case was gone. He was extremely worried4the suitcase had all his important papers,5his passport.
He reported the6to the police and then sat there,7and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of8all the paperwork organized again from a9country while trying to 10in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to 11my husband's name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the12.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family 13all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of 14papers. Her parents had carefully 15them out, although they had found mainly foreign16on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new 17number to a friend.
That family not only returned the important documents to us that day but also 18our faith and 19in people. We still remember their 20and often send a warm wish their way.

When I was young I wanted to be a model,so when a national contest was staged,I convinced my parents to have a try.I was selected and told that I was talented and that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most famous modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At 13,my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go.We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.
I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model.I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!
Of course,I wasn't signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to about 1.75metres I could be a success.I prayed for a growth spurt(冲刺)because I could not imagine giving up my dream.I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes,$500 for a photo shoot, and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of my begging.
The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every clay I didn't receive a call,I grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City.We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short.I was depressed.
Years later,I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn't actually love modeling, just the idea of it.I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.
Is your school good for the environment?
Being green wasn't easy for Kermit the Frog(a famous cartoon character)—but it is for a growing number of schools around the country.A "green" school is an environmentally friendly building that uses less energy by depending on earth's natural resources for heat, light, and power.Green schools have clean air,a lot of natural light, and renewable power sources.
New studies show that green schools are not only good for the environment, but good for you too!Kids in classrooms with a lot of daylight scored 25 percent higher on reading and math tests than students who studied in rooms with less natural light.Students in schools with more natural light took three to four fewer sick days than students exposed to artificial classroom lighting. The further study found that those students had less dental decay(龋齿)because they were exposed to more of the vitamin D produced by the sun.
The Willow School in N.J. is a school that was built as a green building in 2002.Parts of the building are made wholly from recycled materials. To help trap heat, for example, building workers filled the walls with material from old blue jeans instead of the traditional insulation(绝缘物)made of chemicals.Every classroom has skylights to allow most sunlight, and solar panels(太阳能电池板)line the south end of the building. It uses about 70 percent less energy than a non-green school. This helps the school cut down on high energy costs.
Kate Burke Walsh, head of the Willow School, says,"Sunlight has an impact—you're happier."The clean, natural surroundings help both students and teachers "handle stress and stay relaxed and focused…it's a very calming atmosphere."
Spell checks are turning us into a nation of idiots with a third of adults failing to reach the expected spelling ability of an 11-year-old child,a shocking study shows.
A survey involving 1,000 adults aged between 16 and 77 found that 67 percent would reach Level 4 in Standard Assessment Tests (ASTs),while less than half (44 percent) would achieve Level 5.Fifteen percent of the adults tested even failed to reach Level 3,which is below Level 4—the expected level of children at age 11.Experts blamed the poor showing of the adults on the popularity of tools such as spell check and auto-correct,which both play an important role in modem-day living.
The study asked adults to complete Key Stage 2 spelling tests designed to judge the performance of children aged 10 and 11,as they reach the end of primary school. But the test spelled trouble for many of the adults tested. The study was charged by King Digital Entertainment, makers of popular mobile games such as Candy Crush.People taking part in the test were asked to spell 35 different words taken from SATs spelling papers from the past three years. In a test which imitated real exam conditions."Phenomenon" and "unnecessary" were among the words spelled wrong by more than half of those participants.Other words which fewer than half were able to spell included rhythmic (42 percent) and jewellery (49 percent).
Susie Dent.Lexicographer(字典编纂者)and resident word expert on TV show Countdown, believed the results were partly down to the popularity of tools such as spell check and auto-correct.She said,"Tho result is disappointing. It suggests that the ability to spell is losing its importance in our daily lives.Modem tools like spell check and auto-correct encourage us to switch off from learning, leading to satisfaction or,at worst, indifference."
Last week when I was reading at home,my younger sister rushed in and told me an old man was lying on the ground in front of our building.I immediately took my first-aid kit and ran downstairs. He was suffering a slight heart attack. And I performed CPR on him.Luckily,an ambulance came soon and he was taken to hospital.Later that day I was told by the hospital what I did helped rescue the old man's life.I was happy to hear that. There were many people who wanted to help around the old man then.Yet no one performed first aid on him as they hadn't attended a first-aid course.
Here are my reasons.
You can gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to act in an emergency. You never know when you might need them—you could be at home,at work,at school or on holiday. If you have the skills, you can act whenever you're needed.
For your family, your neighbors or the broader community, having more people with first-aid skills helps build a stronger and more harmonious community.
You can stay safe at work. With first-aid knowledge you can create a safe work environment and help meet your workplace's safety requirements.
It's helpful to your future career. The first-hand experience you gain through learning first aid and using your skills could help you decide if you want to pursue a career in the health profession.
A.Yet at the same time I felt a bit sad.
B.I received a phone call from the hospital.
C.You can be a resource for your community.
D.Illness and injury can happen anywhere, anytime.
E.You can take first-aid courses in your community for free.
F.I think everyone should learn at least some basic first-aid techniques, which can be very vital.
G.It also shows your commitment to a career in the health profession when it comes to applying for jobs.

We help people with difficulties.
The kindness of Chinese people on me.
I came across an interesting story when I visited my cousin in Henan Province,China. My cousin grew up next door to a girl(call) Li Shichun. The "Chun" part of Li Shichun stands for spring. That's when she was born. But that's not all.She is also nameda Sui Dynasty engineer,Li Chun. Her father thought him(admire) because he built bridges you can really count on.But her mother wouldn't like her daughter(have) that name because she thought that(sound)too much like a boy's name. She was worried that her daughter would have to put up with too much teasing withman's name.So they figured out a way to change it.They added "Shi" from her grandmother's name.Well, that was lucky because she looks like her grandmother anyway.Li Shichun(eventual) went to universityshe studied medicine. However, she didn't like it so she changed her studies and ended up (become) an engineer! She became quite famous when she invented a new way of holding up suspension(bridge) during the building process.
