A taxi hit a truck. A policeman spoke to the taxi driver and to the truck driver. He also spoke to Tom. He was a witness (目击者). This is what they said.
TRUCK DRIVER: I was driving from the airport to Newton. A car crossed the road, so I slowed down. I did not stop. A taxi hit the back of my truck. Nobody was seriously hurt but both cars were damaged(受损害).
TAXI DRIVER: I was driving behind a truck a few kilometers from Newton. The truck stopped suddenly. The driver did not give me a warning (警告). I was driving very slowly. I could not pass the truck because there were two cars coming near from Newton. My taxi hit the truck, and some glass cut my left hand.
TOM: I was watching the traffic about a kilometer from the airport. A truck was going to Newton. It was not going very quickly. There was a taxi about two hundred meters behind the truck. It was going fast. When the truck slowed down, the taxi hit it. The taxi driver was not looking at the truck. He was looking out of the window at something. My friend saw the accident, too.
Tom's friend spoke to the policeman and agreed with Tom.
When you are feeling unhappy or forget how great you are, there are six ways to make you feel good about yourself.
●Look in the mirror and say to yourself, "I am a special person and there's no one in the world like me. I can do anything. "It may not sound so good, but it really works!
●Do something nice for someone. Helping others always makes you feel good.
●Smile! Be friendly to the people you meet. Look for the good things in your friends and family.
●Learn something new! Have you always wanted to design your own room or learn how to swim? Go for it! New challenges are fun and give you a sense of accomplishment when you have finished.
●Start to write a diary. Turn off the TV and let your imagination fly! Write down your thoughts, dreams or anything you want! Writing always helps to express your feelings.
●Stay with your family. We all need our family time. Talk with your mum or dad or maybe even your cousin.
There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who travelled to places; you can go and see a colour film about them; or you can read travel books.
It seems that there are three kinds of travel books, the first are those that give a personal, subjective (主观的)idea of travels which the writer has got himself. Those books can be useful if the writers share their travelling experience with others. The second kind are those books which give objective (客观的)information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some places or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the places in detail. Like the first kind, they can be interesting and exciting. But their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.
Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eye on its date of publication(出版)because travel is a very practical matter and many things change quickly in the 21st century. Finally, you should make sure that it's easy to find the useful information for your travel.
Do you live in a city? Do you know how cities began? Long long ago, the world had only a few thousand people. These people moved from one place to another. They moved over the land, hunting animals for food. No one knows how or when these people learned about growing food. But when they did, their lives changed. They did not have to move houses any more. They could stay in one place and grow it. People began to live near each other, so the first village grew. Many people came to work in the villages, and these villages became larger and larger. Then people had machines, life in the villages changed again. People built factories. More and more people lived near the factories. So the villages grew into cities. Some of them grew very big. Today, it's strange that some people are moving back to small villages. Can you tell me why?
- Yes. I want her to see me as soon as she gets off the plane.
