A ceremony(仪式)where boys become crocodile(鳄鱼)men
When does a teenager grow up and become an adult? In many countries, it happens on your 18th (生日), but in some parts of the world, you have to do something special to (进入)the world of grown-ups.
On an Oceanian island, some people live near the Sepik River, which is (充满的)of crocodiles. They believe that crocodiles made the (地球)and its people. When it is time for teenage boys to become men, a "crocodile ceremony" takes place.
The boys are taken to small house (叫作)the "Crocodile Nest". In the house, the boys are told to think of their crocodile "fathers and mothers". Old people in the village say that if the boys think of their crocodile parents, they will be stronger and (勇敢的)because the ceremony will cause great pain. To take their minds off the pain, the boys tell jokes in the house, rather than just stay (沉默的). Surprisingly, some of the boys even sleep (在……期间)the most painful parts of the ceremony! It will be (八)weeks before they leave the house.
When the boys (最后)leave the crocodile house, there is singing and dancing in the village to welcome the new crocodile men.
Why are some animals pets and others lunch?
In some countries, dogs and cats are commonly considered as pets, while chickens, ducks, and (猪) are food. However, in some other countries dogs and cats are food, and the food animals are pets.
People (分开,将……分成) animals into several kinds to their own needs. For example, you may have(朋友) who keep rabbits as pets. Some people (烹饪) rabbits as dishes. People treat a rabbit as a pet because it (带来) them pleasure. They eat it, for they think it is a kind of meat. They kill it because they believe it is (有害的) to plants or people.
People also treat animals differently based on their own cultures. Most of us have dogs as pets. Dogs live in our house, like a (成员) of the family. However, in some cultures, dogs are considered unclean. People(几乎不)ever keep them as pets. In some parts of Southeast Asia, dogs are on the menu. (百万)of dogs are killed every year.
What's (正确的)and wrong in the way we treat animals?
Daniel Kristiansea is a 14-year-old schoolboy from Denmark. Recently, while doing his history homework about World War Ⅱ, he had a surprising discovery (在……后面)his family's home. He found the remains of a World War Ⅱplane and a (飞行员).

Read-a-thons Many schools organize read-a-thons to raise money. Students can get money (简单地) for the number of books they read in a given amount of time. They may have (十) weeks to read. Little kids can also get money according to how many (页) they read. The read-a-thons are (举行) not only to raise money, but also to encourage teenagers to read.
Bowl-a-thons Bowling is an (有趣的) sport for many Americans. In a bowl-a-thon, people raise money for every point they get in the game. The higher the score is, the more money they make for the charity.
Lan Lan, a student of Grade Seven in Lushan, was taking a drawing class in a tent on April 23. Guess what she drew—a house with wings. When the teacher asked why she did so, Lan said if her house could f , it wouldn't fall down in an earthquake.
Lan's hometown was hit by a searthquake on April 20. At least 196 people were killed and more than 11,000 were injured. Many people became homeless. Soldiers and doctors qarrived in the area, saving people and rebuilding homes. Lots of money was sent there to help all those in need.
Although we can't prevent (阻止) an earthquake from happening, we can use some methods to rharm. During an earthquake, do not jump out of high buildings because it is very d. Another method is to cover your head and neck ua strong table or desk. If there is no shelter (躲避处) nearby, you can also stay by a wall, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. And then you must keep calm and stay there u the shaking stops.
Japan is a c which lies on the earthquake belt (地震带) and it is very good at dealing with earthquakes. From a very young age, the Japanese are already taught how to survive (幸存) them. Students often receive earthquake training. Almost in every Japanese family you can find a survival kit (救生装备) with a flash-light, a radio, water and enough food for several days. This helps people to stay aafter an earthquake.
