Several months ago, a couple with a little girl moved in next door to me. The girl seemed too quiet to make any noise, while the parents were always 1her loudly. Whenever we met my new neighbors, I always spoke, but the only 2 I ever got was a hello from the 4-year-old girl.

I usually go out for breakfast and one day when I returned, they were just coming from their home and the little girl was holding the door open for others. I stayed in the car doing unnecessary things as I wasn't in a 3. The parents were telling her to get into the car immediately. I looked up and saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me.

As a disabled man, I can't hurry at 4, but I hurried as much as I could and thanked her. She was smiling like a lovely angel. I was so 5 by her small act of kindness. That afternoon I was shopping and I saw a white bear. I thought of the girl and said to myself. "I believe she would like that" so I bought it.

The next day there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her parents. She was so 6of her bear and thanked me as if I had never been thanked before. The mother and father both thanked me.

Now when we meet, we all speak, and in a friendly manner I might add. As time passes, I don't hear that shouting as often.7, hardly at all.

Last night we had about four inches of snow. I looked out at my car and wondered 8 I was going to keep my doctor's appointment(约会). When I opened the outside door, there was my car with all the snow cleaned. I can't express how I felt at that moment. The man next door was the only person I knew in the whole building,9when I saw him the next day, I asked him if he was the good man that cleaned my snow. He said No. He wanted to but his wife said she wanted to do it.

Isn't it amazing that a 4-year-old girl can change so many things for the better? It is said that good things usually come from 10.

Cheating(欺骗)can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who the true winners of a game were.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won't help on the next test--unless the person cheats again.
People lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and may be at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they're busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending time studying. Other kids might feel like they can't pass the test without cheating, even when there seems to be a good reason for cheating, cheating isn't a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before the day and couldn't study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don't have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
    1. (1) The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, ______.
A . it is unfair to other people B . it does harm to their health C . teachers should punish them D . teachers shouldn't stop them at once
    2. (2) Some students like cheating mainly because______.
A . the material in the test is very difficult. B . they want to do better than the others C . cheating can make hard things seem very easy. D . they have little time to study their lessons.
    3. (3) The fourth paragraph mainly tells us______.
A . some kids can't pass the test without cheating B . why kids cheat in the test C . cheating isn't a good idea D . some kids don't spend the time studying
    4. (4) We can learn from the passage _______.
A . cheaters are often thought highly of B . people show no respect for those who cheat C . parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble D . kids cheat in the test because of swim practice

Several days ago, I was walking home from school and saw some writing on the fence of a house I was passing by. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination (终点).” I had been having a bad day and just reading this brightened my day a little. I also took out a pen and wrote one of my favorite quotes (格言) down.

When I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine in the handwriting as the first one. I added another, and we kept at this pattern for quite a while. One day, I was writing another quote on the fence and the old man, one of my neighbors, who owned the fence, saw me. He came out and I was afraid he would be mad at me for writing on his fence; he was not known to be very friendly. He gave me a sharp glance and then read the quotes on the fence. Without saying a word, he said something to himself and then went back inside. I was a bit terrified for a while, afraid to go back to the fence, but when I did, I noticed not more quotes but two words in entirely different handwriting had been added, “Thank you.”

Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He beckoned (召唤) me over and told me how my quotes had been inspiring him, how he thanked me and how he was glad to see young people still have “values”. We are now good friend and I talk to him a lot. This experience has changed my life. I still don't know who wrote that very first quote, but if he is out there, I'd like to say “thanks” to that unknown friend.

    1. (1) How did the author feel before he saw the words on the fence?
      A . Excited B . Bored C . Unhappy D . Tired
    2. (2) Why did the writer begin to write a quote on the fence?
A . He wanted to practice his handwriting. B . He had gotten some help from the quote. C . He thought doing this was interesting. D . He wanted to catch his neighbor's attention.
    3. (3) Why was the writer afraid when he found that his neighbor had seen him?
A . He had thought that the old man was a mad person. B . he had once been told the old man was cold-hearted. C . He thought the old man would scold(责骂) him for what he had done. D . He thought the old man would tell his parents about his action.
    4. (4) Who must have added “Thank you.” to the fence?
      A . The old man. B . Someone else. C . The writer himself. D . That unknown friend.
    5. (5) We can learn from the passage that __________.
A . writing quotes on fences is a good idea B . the writer has written three quotes on the fence C . the good relationship between neighbors is very important. D . the old man has changed his opinion about young people.
四、根据下列句子及所给汉语注释或通过上下文,写出空缺处各单词的正确形式,每空只写一词。
五、回答问题
  • 30. (2018九上·苏州期末) 请认真阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。

It was Mother's Day. John was so busy with his work that he couldn't go back home. When he passed by a flower shop in the evening, an idea came to his mind. "I'll send Mum some roses."While John was picking his flowers, a young man went inside. "How many roses can I get for only five dollars, Madam?" he asked. The assistant was trying to tell him roses were as expensive as forty dollars a dozen (一打). Maybe he would be happy with carnations (康乃馨).

"No, I have to have red roses." He said, "My mum was badly ill last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. Now I want to get something special, it has to be roses as rose is her favorite."

After hearing it, John said he would pay the rest of the money for the young man. Moved by both of them, the assistant said," Well, lovely young men, thirty dollars a dozen, only for you." Taking the roses, the young man almost jumped into the air and ran out of the shop. It was well worth twenty-five dollars John paid to see the exciting moment. Then John paid for his dozen of roses and told the assistant to send them to his mother.

As he walked out, he felt nice. Suddenly he saw the young man crossing the street and going into a park. But soon he realized it was not a park but a cemetery (墓地). Crying, the young man carefully laid the roses," Mum, oh, Mum, why didn't I tell you how much I loved you? God, please help me find my mum and tell her I love her."

Seeing this, John turned and quickly walked to the shop. He would take the flowers home himself.

    1. (1) Whose mother died?

    2. (2) How much did John spend in the flower shop that day?

    3. (3) Do you want to say "Mum, I love you" to your mother? Why or why not?
