In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “Keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment (公寓房间) in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it ‘‘Keeping up with the Joneses”, because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
    1. (1) Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ___________.

A . hope to be rich people like their neighbors B . want others to know or to think that they are rich C . want to hide their wealth from other people D . would like to be common people
    2. (2) Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is ____.

A . an important name for important people B . a popular name in the United States C . the name of the neighbor he did not like D . a name which people did not use any longer
    3. (3) According to the writer, it is _________ to keep up with the Joneses.

      A . correct B . interesting C . impossible D . Good
  • 4. (2015高一上·蕲春期中) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
    D
I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格)of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”
Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑)in Japan because most streets there don't have names; in Japan, people use landmarks(地标)in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it is about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don't know.
It's true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don't know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
    1. (1) When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually ____________.

A . describe the place carefully B . show him a map of the place C . tell him the names of the streets D . refer to recognizable buildings and places
    2. (2) What is the place where people measure distance in time?

      A . New York. B . Los Angeles. C . Kansas. D . Iowa.
    3. (3) People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer _____________.

A . order to save time B . to cheat him C . so as to be polite D . for fun
    4. (4) What can we infer from the text?

A . It's important for travelers to understand cultural differences. B . It's useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly. C . People have similar understandings of politeness. D . New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

I hope you're OK! Write and let me know what you've been doing!
