Is the art of conversation dying? The other day, my wife 1 two teenage children did something we haven't 2 for ages. It didn't require the Internet, a TV screen9 batteries... or anything else for that matter. But we all 3 it so much we're thinking of doing it again sometime.
We had a conversation. The kind of real, live conversation was 4 when I was growing up, but which seems all too rare these days. Today we have chat rooms, text messages, e-mails but we seem to be losing the 5 of communicating face-to-face. We all know 6 young people are out on a date(约会) these days, they spend most of that time 7 their mobile phones. And teenagers nowadays seem to 8 communicating with their friends by sending text messages rather than actually 9 to them.
If we carry on like this, in the future, we'll lose the use of our 10. What do you think of it? E-mail me, and who knows? Maybe we could even have a real conversation about it!
Men have always wanted to fly like birds. Birds can fly easily because they are light, but men's bodies are heavier.
Men first went up into the air in balloons. These were big bags, and they were filled with gas. Hydrogen (氢气) is a useful gas for balloons. It is lighter than air. Helium is also lighter than air, but it costs a lot of money. So balloons are usually filled with hydrogen.
Balloons have to fly with the wind as they have no engines (发动机) to drive them. Later, men made airships. They are balloons with engines. They are also filled with hydrogen.
Aircrafts (飞机) with wings now take people across the world. Powerful engines drive these machines across the sky. Some of the engines are like the engines of cars, but they are more powerful.
There is another kind of engine, we call it the jet (喷射) engine. An English engineer invented the jet engine. At the same time, Germans were also building a jet engine. In May 1941, the English engineer's new engine was fixed in an aircraft, and the aircraft flew quite well.
Jet engines are very powerful. Usually two to four are enough for an airplane, but some big aircraft need six. Anyone in a moving jet plane can feel the power of the engines. Jet planes can travel faster than sound. As a flying jet plane leaves its noise behind, we do not hear it until it has gone.
The most common disease in the world is the cold. It often starts with a sore throat(噪子痛).You sneeze and your nose runs. You usually have a headache too. Often you have a cough. It's not a serious disease, but you can feel quite ill.
There isn't a cure(特效药)for a cold, but you can take medicine(药)to make you feel better. It is good to rest, and to drink a lot of water, too. A doctor once told me "With the right medicine, a cold will last for seven days. With no medicine, it will still go on for a whole week!"
Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people understood that some plants made them feel better. They ate certain parts of plants, like the leaves, the fruit, or the seeds(籽).For example, the juice of lemons makes a sore throat feel better.
In modern times, scientists have studied these plants, and found out what chemicals(化学物质)are in them. Much of our medicine today is made from those chemicals.
There are some diseases which we can't cure(治愈)yet. And nobody has found a cure for old age. But because of modern medicine, most of the people live longer than their grandparents.
Hello. I'm Li Lei. I'm a student from Star Middle school. Let me tell you something about my tour to Disneyland.
My father worked in New York 5 years ago, so I visited him with my mother. I went there by plane. It was my first time to take a plane. I felt a little nervous when the plane took off. I looked out of the window and saw the houses getting smaller and smaller. When I looked out of the window again, I saw some beautiful white clouds. Actually, it was a happy trip for me.
During my stay in the US, Dad and Mum took me to the Disneyland in Orlando. It was the biggest one in the world. We visited the“magic Kingdom”and“Epcot”, two interesting parks. In the Mickey and Minnie's house. I really met Minnie and took photos with her. My favourite game was“Universe or Energy”. I saw the dinosaurs (恐龙) there. I felt very excited. I bought some souvenirs from the shop.
The travelling in Orlando Disney was very amazing .I'm planning to go to Hong Kong Disney with my parents next winter holiday. It is the smallest one in the world, but it is the first one in China.
