Because of the outbreak of the COVID-19, many people are wearing masks to make themselves healthy. It's a very simple but useful way to protect people from lots of harmful things. In fact, masks have been helping humans for centuries.
1st century
At that time, many people in Roman Empire worked underground. But most of them died of respiratory(呼吸的)illnesses. To solve this problem, a Roman advised people to use animal skins to stop dust. His idea was considered the very first recorded mask invention.
16th century
Early inventions did not stop. Many centuries later, an Italian suggested using clothes which were wet over the face to protect against the infection(传染).
19th century
In 1897, a doctor called Johann designed a simple mask composed of one layer(层)of gauze(纱布),asking medical workers to wear it to stop infection. That was the first recorded use of a surgical(外科的)mask.
20th century
In 1910, a disease(疾病)broke out in Northeast China. Chinese doctor Wu Liande made a cheap face mask called "Wu's mask". Made of two layers of surgical gauze, it was praised by experts around the world, because it was simple to make and had a low production cost.
Modern exploration
With some outbreaks of diseases and the rise of environmental pollution caused by much waste, the materials in masks have continued to evolve(进化)to better protect its wearer. For example, when facing smog, mask models such as N95 and KN90 became highly popular. In the future, mask will continue to improve, hopefully so will the habits of humans.
