Charles Joseph La Trobe was born in England on March 20th, 1801. He received education at Magdalene College(莫德林学院), Cambridge. As a young man, Charles enjoyed climbing a lot. Between 1824 and 1830, he lived in Switzerland and climbed many mountains. He got married in Switzerland in 1835. Four years later, Charles took his family to Australia and built a house which he had shipped over from London. The house now is a museum.
In 1851, Charles became Lieutenant-Governor(副州长)of Victoria, a state in Australia. When he arrived, the population of Melbourne(墨尔本), the capital of Victoria, was only 3,000. But within a few months, it became larger and increased to 80,000. This could have caused a lot of problems, but Charles soon created a better police force. Charles also did many other things to improve Melbourne. He set up the City University and State Library. He made sure that as the city grew, there would be more parks and gardens.
Now, there are lots of things in Melbourne to remember Charles. La Trobe University, a public research university, is one of them. It has got a history of more than 50 years. There's a statue(雕塑)of Charles at the university. Interestingly, the statue was upside down.
Charles retired(退休)and returned to England in 1854. He died on December 4th, 1875.
