Artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) has slowly become a part of our everyday lives. One of the biggest uses for AI is facial recognition (FR).
FR has now been put to use in subway stations in Zhengzhou, Henan province. Passengers can link their phones to the subway's smartphone app.
FR technology can greatly speed up security checks. Yuan Xiaoqin, a park manager in Hangzhou, told China Central Television the reason the park upgraded (升级) its entry system:" Facial recognition can help a visitor enter the park in two or three seconds. Fingerprint information sometimes isn't sensitive(灵敏的), especially in cases of injury or when the fingers are too dry to enable recognition. "Before, the park used a fingerprint entry(进入) system.
However, some people are worried about the security risks that FR can bring.
According to China Daily, many people feel uncomfortable using facial recognition. They worry that their information could be stolen.
In August, a face-swapping(换脸) app called Zao allowed users to imitate(模仿) celebrities through the use of facial recognition. Users worried that the app was collecting a large amount of personal information.
Sometimes people can refuse to use some apps if they don't want to put their personal information at risk, but sometimes people don't have a choice.
Zhao Zhan ling, a legal researcher at the China University of Political Science and Law, said growing worries over facial recognition are understandable. Once information is stolen, it's hard to take effective measures to stop it.
There is no law in China to regulate the use and collection of facial information, Zhao said, adding that companies and local governments should be careful to prevent abuse of the technology.
