John spent his holiday at his uncle's house. From the first day John realized that his uncle's dog, Oliver, was leading a sad life. His meals were never given on time, nor was he taken for walks daily. Meanwhile, Oliver was shouted at all day long.
"Your uncle brought Oliver so that the dog could protect the house from thieves but actually neither he nor his wife loves him," one neighbor told John. John felt pity for Oliver.
One day John went out for a walk with Oliver when a storm suddenly came. Oliver was lost in the heavy rain after thunder and lightening (电闪雷鸣). John's uncle put an advertisement(广告) in the paper to find him. After all, he had spent much money buying Oliver and did not want to lose him.
Someone said on the phone that he had found the dog. John was sent to check on the dog. It was a half-an-hour ride by bus. A lady and her husband greeted John. It was they who had answered John's uncle's advertisement.
Oliver was sleeping and covered with a warm quilt on the bedroom floor. A pot of milk was laid in the corner possibly for his next feed.
"I found him on the back seat of my car. He must have climbed in during the storm," the lady said. "In a few days he has become part of my family. Ever since Cooper, our dog died, we have decided not to have any pets and then suddenly…" her voice quivered (颤抖).
"For a moment we thought of not replying to the advertisement," the husband said, "My wife loves the dog so much, but we think the owner must love him deeply and cries all the time."
John smiled. "I am sorry, but this is not our Oliver."
There was a cry of joy from the lady. John would have to lie to his uncle but in return, Oliver would get a life of love and care. John knew he had done the right thing.
