As a university student, I decided to learn German. For some reason I really liked the language, but I was not very good at learning it. The grammar1me a lot and even drove me crazy. My only advantage was 2-I got an A+ on every word test I took. After two years of studies, I struggled ( 挣 扎 ) to communicate in3German and signed up( 报 名 ) to study in Germany to complete my degree. It was the 4term I would ever have.
The moment I arrived in Germany, I felt like I was starting from scratch (从头开始). The German I'd learned in university wasn't practical (实用的) for everyday conversation. I had a lot of difficulty in getting around, reading emails and talking with my classmates. I was often nervous at school,5about whether the teachers would call on me in class and whether I'd understand their questions. I only6a little around my eight roommates, who always spoke German slowly to me and didn't seem to mind my7.
I chose to study three courses-reading & writing, grammar and history. All were in German and difficult, but the history class was the worst. The teacher spoke so8 that almost everything he said flew right over my head. I sat in the front, took notes and even recorded each word he said in class, but9helped. I had no idea what the class was really about.
Years have passed, but I still remember how terrible I felt when10another language. That trip was a difficult but valuable lesson. I think my failure that term taught me just as much as my success.

Do Russians really love taking baths in snow? |
You can say that, I guess. But well, it's not like a real bath. When you go to a Russian banya (俄罗斯澡堂), it's very hot there, perhaps about 40 or 50 degrees. So after that people like to go to the snow to cool themselves down. It feels like you are born again. It's like heaven (天堂). But you don't really stay in the snow for too long. Just a few seconds for you to feel refreshed (清爽的). Just to cry on the street "Oh my god! It's so cold!" and then go. By Alisa Topchiy, 23 years old |
Do Russian students go to school when it's 50 degrees below zero? |
My hometown is in Siberia (西伯利亚). It is one of the coldest places in the world. The winter is super cold. It can be 50 or 60 degrees below zero. So there is a rule for schools in winter: when the temperature is lower than 52 degrees below zero, schools are closed and people don't have to go to work. But if it is 51 degrees below zero, you still have to go to school and go to work. By NIK GU, 20 years old |
Do Russian planes keep flying in extreme(极端的) weather? |
Recently there was a heavy storm in Shanghai, and all the other flights were canceled, but only Russian airplanes landed and then took off. So people thought that Russian pilots are not afraid of bad weather. Many Russian pilots used to be in the air force (空军). They then moved to civilian (民用的) flights. So they really know how to do their work. Russian pilots are very popular around the world. A lot of companies like to invite Russian pilots because they're skilled. By Arina Pershina, 19 years old |
John spent his holiday at his uncle's house. From the first day John realized that his uncle's dog, Oliver, was leading a sad life. His meals were never given on time, nor was he taken for walks daily. Meanwhile, Oliver was shouted at all day long.
"Your uncle brought Oliver so that the dog could protect the house from thieves but actually neither he nor his wife loves him," one neighbor told John. John felt pity for Oliver.
One day John went out for a walk with Oliver when a storm suddenly came. Oliver was lost in the heavy rain after thunder and lightening (电闪雷鸣). John's uncle put an advertisement(广告) in the paper to find him. After all, he had spent much money buying Oliver and did not want to lose him.
Someone said on the phone that he had found the dog. John was sent to check on the dog. It was a half-an-hour ride by bus. A lady and her husband greeted John. It was they who had answered John's uncle's advertisement.
Oliver was sleeping and covered with a warm quilt on the bedroom floor. A pot of milk was laid in the corner possibly for his next feed.
"I found him on the back seat of my car. He must have climbed in during the storm," the lady said. "In a few days he has become part of my family. Ever since Cooper, our dog died, we have decided not to have any pets and then suddenly…" her voice quivered (颤抖).
"For a moment we thought of not replying to the advertisement," the husband said, "My wife loves the dog so much, but we think the owner must love him deeply and cries all the time."
John smiled. "I am sorry, but this is not our Oliver."
There was a cry of joy from the lady. John would have to lie to his uncle but in return, Oliver would get a life of love and care. John knew he had done the right thing.
There is little doubt that house cats first developed naturally from ancient wild cats. The closest relative is the African wild cat which still lives in Africa today. This is understandable because the first house cats came from Africa.
Cats first started to live around people in Egypt about 6,000-7,000 years ago. From Egypt, cats started to move around the world. This is about the same time when Egyptians began storing grain( 谷 物 ) in buildings. Scientists used to believe that people tamed cats to catch mice and protect the grain. However, cats don't like to be told what to do! Now, scientists believe that cats followed the mice and learned to accept people. Finally, some of the cats began to grow comfortable around people. These were smaller cats that needed protection. As these cats and people got used to each other, then they moved in together. Around 5,000 years ago, cats started to live with people.
Soon cats were in Greece, then the Middle East and China. They moved along Egyptian business roads keeping away mice and keeping people around them. After the Romans came to Egypt, they also accepted the cats and brought them to Europe. These cats likely bred(繁殖) with other cats to form the many kinds of house cats we have today.
Cats are relatively recent house animals. House cats still have a lot in common with their wild relatives. Cats sleep a lot to save energy just like wild cats. They will often get food at night as well. House cats are generally peaceful and friendly, but be careful! If a cat feels it is in danger, it will fight back— just like a wild cat!
What is life's greatest gift? It is choice. Choice is the ability to choose some actions from a set of things to achieve a goal. The reason is that it turns us from dumb(哑的,沉默的) animals into artists. Choice becomes the tool we use to make our life perfect. The tool doesn't come free, however, for the price of choice is responsibility.. It is enjoyment.
Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life. It's the creative power of life. Life is always changing and we have to make lots of choices. . We often need to check where we are on our journey. We need to ask questions: Am I moving closer to my goals? If not, what action will I take now to make myself realize my goals?
And our life becomes more convenient or comfortable because of them. For example, you decide which stores to shop at and which bus station to go on. But the decisions that we make to sculpt(雕刻)our lives are much more important than deciding where to shop. The more we understand the difference between small and big decisions, the more pleasure we will get.
Life is like a chess game. . All chess lovers realize that it isn't necessary to win to enjoy the game. Make the best moves you can under the conditions. Then you can enjoy your life.

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleephours or more every night. Thesleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age, some people need to sleep more while for a few hours is enough.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization, half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived(睡眠不足). Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but alsoaccidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood .
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usuallyas "lazy". Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep, and they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you'll do.
Dear Daughter,
You have been in the university for two weeks. Are you used to the food? Can you sleep well with the other three girls at night? It's the first time for you to live outside without any family around. You must learn to take good care of yourself. If you aren't used to the food of the dining hall, you can eat out in some restaurants near your school. Do you remember the Northeast Dumpling Restaurant? It's across from the gate of your university. We ate some northeastern dishes and dumplings there. You said their food was very delicious. You can eat there. Don't worry about money. If your money runs out, you can call us to send you some. Health is more important than money. Never be hungry. Remember to eat on time. Don't hang out at night. It's not safe. You'd better make friends with your classmates and roommates. Don't stay up late and do sleep well. If there's any problem, call me and ask the teachers for help. I wanted to call you, but now I think the letter can be kept to remind you of something useful. You have grown up, but you're always a child in my mind. I'm always there for you.
I want to learn about your recent life. Call me or write back when you're free!
Yours, Mom

Galileo who was a great Italian scientist was born in 1564. When he was in middle school, he planned to become a doctor, but he changed his mind. He liked a different kind of science—physics. In Galileo's time, not much was known about how objects moved. He did an experiment by dropping two balls in different weights from a high tower and discovered that they hit the ground at the same time!
In later years, Galileo became interested in how the stars and planets moved. He watched the sky with a telescope( 望远镜) he built by himself. Once again, he saw things no one had ever seen before. For example, he saw that the moon was not smooth. Then he noticed that the sun had spots(斑点) that seemed to move. Galileo died in 1642, but his work helped to change the world. He is sometimes called the father of modern science because he showed us how important it is to look carefully at things and to test out ideas with experiments.
