A man from New Zealand flew to New York for the NYC Marathon, He is being1 for stopping halfway to help push a disabled racer using a hand cycle across the finish line.
30-year-old Ben Parore flew to New York with a charity called Cure Kids New Zealand, which2 medical research to help save, extend and improve the lives of children diagnosed with serious life impacting and life-limiting health conditions.
Parore was around the halfway3 and filming a video when he 459-year-old James Akaka. Parore was trying to get a smile out of the5runner when Akaka一who is unable to speak- pointed to the6 of his hand-cycle. After7 that Akaka wanted help in 8 the race, Parore jumped behind the cycle and started9 it. The pair then completed the race together. Akaka's time was seven hours and Parore's was 5 hours and 12 minutes. Parore said that he wasn't10 his finish time, but he was more moved and full of 11 to even be a part of such an amazing event.
He met with Jarmes as he was crossing the mile 13 mark. "He was giving it his all. He couldn't talk to me but he could12 me.. it's like we were supposed to race13 ," he said.
Akaka had travelled from Honolulu, where he is a chef and father of three. Akaka lost his14 and became partially paralyzed (瘫瘓的) after15 a stroke in 2011. He communicates with his16 ones by typing or writing messages to them. He completed Monday's race as part of the Achilles International Team, which encourages people with disabilities to compete in running17.Parore said he was left 18 by the man's determination. He has raised $4,861 of his $5,00019 for Cure Kids New Zealand.
Sunday's marathon saw more than 53, 000 20the finish line. Fifty people in wheelchairs completed the race and finished it with hand-cycles, like Akaka.
